  1. Of course our old friend the Ryugyong Hotel is on there, but I wasn't familiar with any of the other locations/buildings: http://weburbanist.com/2008/09/28/abandone...ns-cities-asia/ Fascinating stuff.
  2. Woo-hoo! My picture made POTD! Yay! I love looking at something that someone else might say is ugly, and finding the beauty in it. There's unappreciated beauty everywhere.
  3. Was interesting to read the live-Tweets from their marketing guy on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/gilv I love this one: "Wow - audacity of people - got a phone call asking if we are giving away damaged furnutre. Wow. That is shockingly bad."
  4. Oh, God. I saw that on Digg this morning and wanted to crawl under a rock. The only thing I can say in our defense as Texans is this: College Station. That is, at least it didn't come out of one of our major cities. And, really, Texas A&M makes its own jokes, so I won't even go there...
  5. Interesting story: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...woman_found.php They still haven't released any information about who she is to the media at large, though, which is strange...
  6. Saw this picture on Flickr today and immediately thought of this thread (is that a sign you're a HAIF addict?): http://www.flickr.com/photos/jefframone/375825393/ That's lovely Chicago, proof that any street can look tangled and cluttered if you photograph it from the right angle.
  7. Am I the only one who thinks it looks endlessly dreary inside? That's a lot of cold, hard, gray surface area in what should be a vibrant facility.
  8. 29-95.com has an early review up of Shuck Daddy's: http://www.29-95.com/restaurants/story/ear...it-shuck-daddys Prices appear to be a bit high, but nice otherwise.
  9. I thought about it and I don't have any memories of any Memorial Day activities growing up, except for getting a day off. In fact, I never knew it was a big deal in other parts of the country until I saw that post.
  10. That's the question posed in this blog post: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...l_day_sucks.php
  11. I haven't noticed anything unusual over there. Is it just the Chron's website that's acting like that?
  12. There's a thread with more information here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...mp;#entry314566
  13. Very cool bird's eye view photos of the construction and the skyline from the tower crane operator on the site: http://www.houstonpress.com/slideshow/view/13227297 I love the first and last photos, and the shot of the guy's boots dangling over the site.

    Ida

I'm such a sucker, but for some reason it made me very sad when they described how young she was (only nine months) and the assumed circumstances of her demise (CO2 poisoning?). You know you're way too tender-hearted when stories about fossils make you sad.
  15. Edinburgh. The third picture gives it away. Gorgeous photos...
  16. Will be interesting to see how long this stays on the air: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...dy_brothers.php
  17. How to cook a cow's head (mmm...barbacoa): http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/...ad_barbacoa.php Breakfast with a bourbon expert from Woodford Reserve: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/...urbon_exper.php Testing out the new Flip video camera at the Ghostland Observatory concert: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2009/05/flipping_out.php p.s. The Flip video camera is THE SHIZNIT. No one can tell it shoots video, since it looks just like a digital camera, but the picture and sound quality are amazing. I've totally dubbed it the future of bootlegging.
  18. Thought it would be nice to talk about Galveston without discussing Ike... http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...y_galveston.php The island has revived a beauty pageant that was once very popular. They have both modern and vintage pageants, which is awesome and adorable. And they even had a few men enter this year... ETA: Slideshow! http://www.houstonpress.com/slideshow/view/13011295
  19. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...he_sports-t.php The article states that Houston "doesn't really care all that much about sports talk radio." Would you say this is true?
  20. There's already a thread for this topic: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=19252 Close up shop here.
  21. Oddly, they're still Twittering: http://twitter.com/sirenuse It's been an interesting view into the world of a business owner who's recently closed their restaurant and what they're going through.
  22. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...oes_some_sh.php There's also speculation that 790 AM might not be the Sports Animal for much longer...
  23. We ended up getting some good reader-submitted photos of our lovely "canals": http://www.houstonpress.com/slideshow/view/8178014 And my car got flooded, too. As if it wasn't a big enough POS already.
  24. Our editor did a bit of a review last week. I say "a bit" because it was a friends and family night, not a regular dining experience. But she liked the place much more than she expected to: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2009/...ght_at_loue.php Also: chicken livers? NOM.
