  1. New pictures for y'all: Taken from my office window, so excuse the slight glare. I'm still wondering where exactly that walkway from the hospital is going to end up in the mall, since right now it's headed towards the rubble of Mervyn's and/or the ice rink. Hmm...
  2. There's already a thread on this topic here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...&pid=253971
  3. I already warned my mom that she was going to be strapped into a wheelchair, facing the corner, in the spare bedroom. She's okay with it.
  4. The humidity has been freakishly low. My hair doesn't know quite what to do...
  5. I propose that, henceforth, the Memorial Hermann building shall be referred to as The Robot Building, for any and all purposes. All those in favor?
  6. That was my feeling about the whole thing, too. To whit: The Comeback Kid
  7. My number one, all-time favorite is The Guild Shop on Dunlavy. But lately, I've been running into some fantastic finds at Bluebird Circle. I used to shop there all the time but they'd gone downhill a bit in recent times. I'm loving their resurgence, though! Which resale and/or consignment shops around town are your favorites for treasure hunting?
  8. Same here, although my digital camera is busted and I'm having to rely on my cell phone camera for now... And, yeah -- The Guild Shop is constantly busy these days. Someone must have let that cat out of the bag...
  9. I just noticed this in an article from January 2007: Residences? Like apartments? Or like extended stay suites? But cool either way...
  10. Not yet. But with traffic getting worse around here and all...
  11. The Quizno's next to Spec's already relocated to a strip mall across I-10 and the Shipley's next door closed down about a month ago. Like the Mr. C's folks said, it's really only a matter of time. That entire area has been pretty desolate for some time, especially since that big Joe Auto (anyone remember that mistake?) closed down. Everything else kind of started shutting down, too. Across I-10 to the north, Bunker Hill is all torn up. I don't know if they've been given the go-ahead to continue widening it past Westview and Long Point, though. Anyone know? If so, that means the elementary school there and the older houses right off Bunker Hill are going to get the shaft.
  12. Has anyone else noticed that they haven't made any progress on the "crown" in about two months? The rest of the building appears to be complete, "skin"-wise, but that stupid crown is still just sitting there all skeleton-like and creepy. What gives?
  13. I really thought that I'd miss Tinseltown, if only because of fond high school memories...but I don't. I really don't. I don't miss having my hubcaps stolen, the fights between random 13-year-olds, the disgusting "food court" or the sticky seats and armrests. The new theater at Memorial City is so nice and (usually) kid-free, not to mention much more convenient. You have to wonder how much longer that will last, though...
  14. Anecdotal, but interesting! Do you happen to know when they were built? Or remember what they looked like inside? I'm just wondering if that parquet flooring and kitchen tilework is original. It certainly looked like it...
  15. More info from Houstonist about the Lake Plaza redevelopment plus a new campaign from the Houston: It's Worth It crew about an art project that's going to be part of the refurbishment: Entire article is here: Set In Stone. Very exciting!
  16. I also heard from their PR firm that they're adding weekday tours, in addition to their regular Saturday tour. Yay!
  17. The Guild Shop is at 2009 Dunlavy and these apartments are literally right next to it, so I'm guessing 2000 block of Dunlavy as an estimated address. Okay, that sounded mean. Let me rephrase: these people had trashed these apartments. There was rubbish all over the yard, all the windows were covered with foil, some of the windows were broken, there were tires and random auto parts and old, empty coolers and used condoms and broken beer bottles and all kinds of stuff just laying about everywhere. It looked like a crack den. Better? Or just meaner? I can't tell.
  18. When I was at the Guild Shop (2009 Dunlavy St.) last weekend, I noticed that the ratty old apartments right next door (on Dunlavy and Indiana) have been nearly gutted. Last time I was there, only a few months ago, they were full of residents. Low income residents, but residents nevertheless. I don't know the name of the apartments -- couldn't find it anywhere -- but it's only a small fourplex of two-story buildings on a central courtyard with what looks like two bedroom apartments four-to-a-building, maybe sixteen apartments total. They appear to have been built in the 1940s and are all brick with some small yet nice architectural details. When I peeked inside one of the vacant units, I noticed that the kitchens all appear to be original with very cool retro tilework, the floors have their original wood parquet and there are even little telephone niches in the walls. Very cute. I was thinking how wonderful it would be if someone rehabbed these units. They're absolutely adorable, if in terrible shape from many years of neglect. And they're in a great location right off West Gray and Dunlavy. But I have a feeling that probably won't happen. Anyone have an idea what might be happening there? HCAD indicates that the apartments might actually be owned by the Guild Shop, but I don't think I'm looking at the right units, since it lists the apartments as being built in 1960 and they look much older than that.
  19. I fully agree with you that it will be a success; I just don't care for the aesthetics of it.
  20. Yeah, sadly Cost Plus closed in February of this year: Heads Up! Now the closest location is by the Galleria, and god knows there's enough traffic to contend with on this side of town without purposely driving twenty or thirty minutes over to some more traffic just for Cost Plus. I was seriously bummed about their decision to close, although I really doubt the legitmacy of their claim that "construction" forced them to close. It's not as if light rail was being installed out front or something. What a cop out.
  21. THIS. That was in the back of my mind all night long: "What a bunch of lazy a--holes." There was zero thought and zero effort put into it. And it showed, big time. If I was one of the "committee members," I'd be utterly ashamed of myself for how the night turned out. A lot of people put in time and money traveling here, getting a hotel, renting a car, paying for their tickets, etc...and to get Don Patron as a return on their investment was a joke. Pi, you are so right, dude. I would warn people away from Don Patron as a potential reunion spot -- or just as a lunch/dinner place, period -- at every chance I got.
  22. The building going up right now is indeed the office building. The mid-rise condo will be next door and hasn't progressed quite as far yet. HBJ was correct in their article. I've seen the 3D models of the site and it looks interesting. The condos appear to have some retail space below and will be connected to the office building by a skyway. Perfect if you happen to live and work right there, but otherwise...a little strange.
