  1. If you're wondering about my first post here, the awkwardness appeared when two threads were merged.
  2. To better orient themselves with the Hispanic neighborhood, Sharpstown Mall is renovating and renaming to PlazAmericas, featuring "huge children’s play area and an 83,000-square-foot mercado (marketplace) that will have multiple stages for live entertainment, a large family lounge and play area." http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2009/12/21/daily7.html
  3. There's a structure in front of the Astrodome which I read was called the "Astrohall". It was torn down around 2004, based on aerials. What was it?
  4. If you've played with the latest version of Google Earth, Houston's vintage aerial photography has been updated to include 1978. Although it's a bit low-res, there's lots of goodies I saw...you can see this railroad spur near 290 here, in addition, you can see LOTS of undeveloped areas (sorry, it was before Hanna-Barbera Land was built) where lots of homes exist nowadays. You can also check out Town & Country Village, where you can see that a section of outdoor mall existed north of Joske's (shocker!) It's fun to explore around 1978...check it out today and report what you find!
  5. Did it mention what those companies were? I have a feeling that many of Houston's companies are large but not really recognizable names...
  6. I think that soon Galleria III will see a major redevelopment, with practically everything gone.
  7. Wow, Fox Sports Grill closed! It was a pretty empty place back in March 2008...and that was when Sharper Image was open, too.
  8. Menil is one of the few neighborhoods I've actually been to in Montrose, but according to Google Maps, there's no streets that are currently closed and will be reopened per the plan.
  9. Maybe it could go in the old Sharper Image, and provide a draw for Galleria III. Maybe.
  10. It's probably by a long shot, but who was the architect of this mall? Maybe they have some early publicity photos/architect's renderings. Anyway, although I have no idea what the mall actually looked like, I kind of imagined it looking like this (except with different skylights and stuff)
  11. I read that The Boat reopened with a new theme and new name. But it was something else before that.
  12. Well, of course. I don't want to abandon railroad tracks and was merely noting that in a semi-idealistic world, we'd abandon that segment. That and lower the Houston temperature by about 15°, on average.
  13. Alternatively, we could abandon the whole stretch altogether, but that a host of problems on its own (increase travel times and fuel usage for trains, increase railroad traffic, etc.). Ignoring those problems, we'd have a great right-of-way for light rail and bikes.
  14. Nope. Not gonna work. Having seen the Villa Maria overpass...it was a mess. They had to move the tracks, cut off businesses from good access (how the Citgo on Finfeather continues to exist eludes me). They also had to move the road, which was convenient for Villa Maria (a kind of run-down golf course was on one side) but no so much for Westheimer (it would require major demolition of homes and businesses). The only other method is to close off the area all together, which will seriously inconvenience people for years to come (the overpass at Harvey Mitchell in C.S. is bad enough, I know inconvenience). Yeah, the aerial photo is about three years old. Oh, and citykid: for "dangerous railroad intersections" in College Station/Bryan, check out West 27th Street. Wow.
  15. Actually, smoothies are quite good. The problem is there's too many variables. 1) Some people use fresh fruit, which is good, except ice has to be added to compensate. 2) Some people use yogurt, which makes it thicker but may give it a weird taste. 3) Some chains (like Smoothie King) use weird powdered "supplements" to make it "healthier" but in reality give it a grainy texture.
  16. I read it in "Behind the Arches" (which although putting McDonald's in a positive light, wasn't paid for by McDonald's...no conspiracy theories, please). Here's a small snippet where it says so.
  17. I was reading in this one book about McDonald's and there was a paragraph about how McDonald's couldn't use the McDonald's name until they acquired the name from a local drive-in called McDonald's. Does anyone remember those times/care to elaborate? (sorry the intro is so short, I'm kind of on a deadline)
  18. Yes, and that's why they disappeared. Well, sometime in the 1980s, Orange Julius stores closed en masse, possibly because of DQ's reign. The thousands of stores vanished, and it wasn't until the late 1990s that they were "reintroduced" under the DQ/Orange Julius banner. By then, very few served hot dogs but no one served french fries. Here's a late specimen that was around in 2007... http://www.labelscar.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/crossroads-mall-okc-27.jpg /still waiting for one in either Galleria or Post Oak Mall
  19. Gee, I kind of like it how it looks now. And once they rebuild Military Walk as pedestrian only, why don't they convert the old sidewalks into grass?
  20. I remember discussing this topic on the railroad that paralleled US-59. From the photos it looks they were hardly used at all. Back in the 1930s, TAMU (in College Station) had a campus spur but it was gone by the early 1940s. No trace of it remains at all. I guess it was the same for Rice, right?
  21. I heard there's still the fake building facades and the walkway to nowhere, just as it had been in March 2008.
  22. There are so many things wrong with that picture its staggering. For one thing, the buildings are shamelessly having light point upward...light pollution ordinances be damned. The buildings would all have to be torn down and completely rebuilt, the intersection no longer goes straight, it's a roundabout. That said, this might be feasible, for say, a mall redevelopment (sort of like CityCentre).
  23. I really don't think USPS can survive without the government. Heck, if they spin USPS off, they might as well spin off NASA and Amtrak and everything else. If USPS is spun off, it will collapse.
  24. I heard that the Post Office wants to sell the huge Chicago one. What's the USPS doing???
  25. Full line, eh? That would explain why Orange Julius was in virtually every mall during the 1970s-1980s. They sold more than drinks. The local mall's frontage (Post Oak Mall in CSTX) had "french fries" below the name. Anyone have a menu from the 70s and 80s?
