  1. Interesting Link on the Brazillian Stadium mentioned above There are plenty of 90k + stadiums in the USA. Rose Bowl LA Colliseum Stanford (I think it is about 90k) Michigan Ohio State Tennessee Memorial Stadium (Maybe not now, but there is always talk of expanding the Horns Home Field) Another Site showing the largest College Football Stadiums. I was right about Stanford
  2. What was she in. I did a google images search and did find much. I guess I will go to IMDB. I spelled her name wrong.... From IMDB.com Link June Allyson, the perenially perky actress who played wife, girlfriend and girl-next-door to a long line of leading men in the 40s and 50s, died Saturday at her home in Ojai, California; she was 88. The actress died of pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis complicated by a long illness, with her husband of 30 years, David Ashrow, at her side. Born Eleanor Geisman in the Bronx, the actress grew up in near-poverty, raised by her divorced mother. After a serious injury at age eight, she spent years confinded in a steel brace, and began both swimming and dancing lessons to increase her mobility. The dancing paid off: in 1938, at age 21, she was cast in the Broadway production Sing Out the News. A prominent role in George Abbott's Best Foot Forward brought her to the attention of Hollywood, and she was later cast by MGM in the 1943 film version, and signed to a contract by the studio. With her raspy voice, sunny disposition and wholesome good looks, she stood apart from other more glamorous actresses yet endeared herself to both women, who identified with her, and men, who saw her as the "perfect wife." Her appeal was epitomized in such films as Little Women (1949), where she played the tomboyish Jo opposite Peter Lawford, and baseball drama The Stratton Story, her first film with James Stewart. Offscreen, Allyson caused concern from her studio bosses when she married Dick Powell, her occasional co-star; the actor had been married twice before and was 13 years her senior, and by most reports their marriage was often tumultuous. In the 50s, Allyson most often played the steadfast wife, most famously opposite previous co-star Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story and Strategic Air Command. Other films during the decade included Executive Suite (with William Holden), The Opposite Sex, The Shrike (a rare unsympathetic role), Interlude, and a remake of My Man Godfrey alongside David Niven. As husband Powell's health began to decline (he died in 1963), Allyson began her retirement from films, and through the 60s worked mainly in television, including her own show, The Dupont Show with June Allyson. Her later career consisted mainly of TV movies and guest star appearances on shows ranging from The Love Boat to The Incredible Hulk, and she underwent another turbulent marriage, to Glenn Maxwell, her former husband's barber. In 1976, she married current husband Ashrow, with whom she traveled extensively. To most recent generations, Allyson was known as the upbeat spokeswoman for Depends undergarments, a role she undertook with aplomb as she helped pioneer research for urological and gynecological diseases in senior citizens. Allyson is survived by her husband and two children, daughter Pamela and son Richard, from her marriage to Powell. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff
  3. Threads like this one are the reason I keep coming back and back to this great site. Mr. Kalas, thank you so much for your updates. I had not read any of this post until today and I was amazed at the time and effort you have exhausted to keep us "strangers" updated on your project. I too have fond recollections of your hotel, or at least the bar located in the basement of your hotel. We all called it the 804 Underground (whethere or not this was the real name, I am not sure). We used to enter through the side entrance into a upper bar that I assume was Charlie's. There was a bouncer named Spider. He was nice as could be and I was always amazed that he would remember me each time I entered the place. He even tried to get me a "date" one night with a lady seated at the bar. I declined, but found the experience to be a lot of fun. The downstairs area was really dark and had a lounge feel to it, but also had a dance floor and played loud clubby type music. I am not sure when I first hit this place but it had to be in the late 90's. We would go about once a year for 4 or so years. I have not been back since probably 2002 (maybe earlier - my memory for dates is not so strong). At any rate, I appluad your efforts with this hotel. I think you are correct in your analysis that downtown needs more a middle of the line hotel. I stayed at the Courtyard downtown when the Stones were in town and I was able to get a room for $120. It was a very plain room (as Courtyard's tend to be), but served its purpose (letting me and wife drink at concert and not drive home). I am not sure there we any other options for us that my wife would have felt safe in. Hopefully your transition will fill the gap for lower priced, safe, and clean hotel rooms. The article in the chronicle was very flattering If you ask me. I think the quote from the gentleman who stated you needed to spend $100,000 per room to update was way off. The fact that Bob Eury and other downtown groups are behind you says a lot. I also commend you on the chiller move and installation. Those projects are never easy and extremely costly. I think that move shows just how serious with your committment to update this hotel. Please keep us updated with any additional changes that occur. I know there are quite a few of us on this board who are extremely interested in your endeavor. GREATEST of luck to your and Uncles and the futre of the Montagu / Cotton Hotel.
  4. 7,000 CD's. That is amazing. That is a lot of music. I used to buy 2-3 CD's a week but then I discovered Naptster (5 years ago) and the world of music was mine for free. Then they got shut down !!! I know pay $.99 per song from Itunes, but I like the set up. 7,000 CD's is amaizng. It is hard to imagine that many CD's. Tell us more.
  5. I am pretty sure my posts speaks for itself. "I know the mod lovers will be mad, but the first thing I would do is replace the cabinets in the kictchen. The green cabinets are too much for me. " The smile was insterted to show that I did not mean this post to be taken too seriously. I know a true mod lovers (apparently like yourself) would most likely like those cabinets. That is great. I am sorry my taste offends you. I am glad you have nothing better to do than analyze my posts and look for contradictory statements. I have posted over 1000 times so feel free to go back and review every post I have ever written and offer your opinions !! I will wait anxiously. Also, will you please point me in the right direction for "Clickable Smilies" etiquitte. Obviously, I missed that memo.
  6. That is the beauty of a great inspector. Fred Brock is the same way. We inspected 3 houses with him before we settled on a 4th home. A test that most people do not think of is a hydrostatic test. This will test for water leaks under your house. If you have a leak it can be tens of thousands to fix. One house we looked at was in great shape, but I decided to splurge on the hydro test. It was $150 I believe. They found a water leak and it was going to cost the seller $13k to fix. He brought in his own guy would was willing to do it for $8k. The seller wanted to split it with us and we backed off. He ended up doing the work before he could sell the house. He was forced to disclose it to other buyers. Of course if you are building a house this test might not be neccesary as all the work is brand new. We were looking at 35-50 year old houses. Shifting slabs can cause leaks......
  7. I too remember seeing those. I was born in 71 so they must have lasted until the 80's at least or I would have never heard of the chain. I could not tell you where I have seen these stores.
  8. that is a great house.. Hope you get it. Looks like very littel is needed in terms of updating. The blinds are not my taste, but I like the mod layout.
  9. That is a great house. I know the mod lovers will be mad, but the first thing I would do is replace the cabinets in the kictchen. The rest of the house looks to be in fantastic shape. The green cabinets are too much for me.
  10. $100 is what I expect to pay for a medium to crappy hotel / motel room these days. Anything nice costs $150+ Anything less and I am afraid for my safetly or need to pull out the black lamp to check the bedspread. BTW, 1970 was nearly 40 years ago. I can see a room being $6.95 back then. EVERYTHING was cheaper 36 years ago.
  11. I have used Fred Brock with Aim Inspectors 4 times now and he is great. I recently went through Houston Shutters when I purchased Plantation Shutters and Wooden Blinds. They did a fantastic job. Probably 10% higher than 3 Day Blinds but at least they want to work with you. 3 Day Blinds SUCKS really bad. Also, I use Service Magic when looking for contractors. Once you sign up they will have 3-4 contractors contact you when you want a specific job done. For Instance, you need the trees pruned and trimmed. You fill out a request and they will email 3-4 names with contact info who do that exact work. They also get your info. I usually sit back and wait for the hungry guys to call me. They are usually more apt to cut you a deal and want the work. You can also do research on these guys and see what other members say.
  12. I just read this entire thread. I am tired now and in need of a nap. Can someone please give me that 12 minutes back.
  13. Happy to help. there are many agents on this board who might offer some more incite. I think you are right on.
  14. Yes, the seller almost always pay for the title policy. Of course this can be negotiated, but I doubt in this instance the buyer would be willing to pay the $800 fee.
  15. Title insurance is regulated and cost about 1%. So that charge is right on. Not sure about the escrow fee- That is probably legal fees which are usually split (is this about $75 per party?). If you are paying a 6% commission your total closing cost should range between 7.5% and 8%. if you are paying less in fees then this will obviously drop. Good luck.
  16. I think his friends in bunker hill are wrong about Memorial City too. It is the 2nd best mall in Houston. If anything it is only getting better. Sure there are undesirables that lurk around, but when has a mall not had those. Even the Galleria has some freaks from time to time.
  17. I would be extremely interesed in all 4 of these episodes. I do not own a VHS player anymore, but I would be willing to pay for these on DVD. IM me if anyone has a set on DVD they would like to burn for me. I will pay for your trouble.
  18. the cotton bowl had games as well. The final was in the Rose Bowl from what I remember. It will be back, but probably not for a while
  19. I for one will miss the robot. OK, not so much.
