  1. I reported the Ardmore St. bridge over Brays Bayou to 311 because it had so much sand and gravel placed on it that it was bumpy and kicking up dust and rocks like driving over a country road. They sent a street sweeper about 2 weeks after I made the request, but it was raining that day and they didn't get it all up. There's still some gravel left on the bridge and sidewalks, so I reported it again and COH closed the ticket claiming it didn't pose a safety hazard.
  2. They demolished all the greenery in the median between Southmore and Binz/Calumet yesterday. I wondered why they planted those trees there in the first place in 2006 knowing that toll lanes would cause them to be ripped out in the not too distant future. One thing I liked about the greenery was that it eliminated rubbernecking when there was an accident on the opposing side.
  3. Still going on nearly 2 weeks now. I'm disappointed in the lack of response from anyone regarding this issue.
  4. @editor I don't know if you've read this thread yet so that's why I've tagged you. I'm still getting a 404 error on thehaif.com.
  5. I drove by yesterday and saw some rebar going up for support columns for what I assume will be the 610 mainlanes.
  6. When I try to access the forums using thehaif.com, I get a 404 error. There's no problem if I use http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/ to access it.
  7. Here's a screenshot of I-45 and Scott from 1966. You can clearly see the light colored pavement of the Mobil station on the NE corner of the intersection.
  8. I just looked at an aerial photo of I-45 and Scott from 1966 on HistoricAerials.com and I'm pretty certain that's I-45 and Scott. I can't link to the aerial view itself, but if you go to HistoricAerials.com and navigate to I-45 and Scott in 1966, you'll see what I mean.
  9. I was at the Almeda Post Office yesterday and saw some door hangers laid out on a counter that said the Southmore Blvd. overpass at 288 will be closed for 12-18 months for demolition and reconstruction starting in January 2018. Traffic crossing 288 on Southmore will have to detour to Blodgett or Calumet/Binz depending on direction of travel. I'm surprised that they can't construct the new overpass while the current overpass is standing like they're doing over at the Holly Hall overpass. Garnet Coleman addresses the closure in his column: http://stylemagazine.com/news/2017/dec/06/coleman-chronicles-southmore-blvd-bridge-highway-c/
  10. The death strip was between Centerville and Buffalo. My dad grew up in Leon Co. and knew all about it. I've driven on it and it is hilly and curvy. I can only imagine what it was like with heavy traffic. From texasfreeway.com:
  11. When US 75 was decomissioned south of Dallas, portions of US 75 that didn't run concurrent with I-45 were redesignated State Highway 75. State Highway 75 runs from Streetman to Conroe. I guess someone at TxDOT thought "hmm, guess we'd better change this sign to SH 75 like we did in Conroe" not realizing that US 75 was decomissioned and not redesignated south of Conroe. If you want another blast from the past, there's still an old Loop 137 sign left from the days when Kelly Rd. was the North Loop. The Loop 137 designation was cancelled in 1980, yet TxDOT even transferred the sign to a new pole within the last few years!
  12. There's a US 75 sign left downtown. It somehow managed to survive the decommissioning and street reconstruction. https://www.google.com/maps/@29.7488068,-95.367842,3a,40.3y,316.67h,80.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sd3IXccPpGU__JS0jB0Z1Sw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
  13. US 75 was routed through downtown along Calhoun St. and Jefferson St. When the Gulf Freeway and the North Freeway were built and the Pierce Elevated was still under construction, there was a gap between the two segments of I-45. Traffic on I-45 would have to take US 75 through downtown to get to the other side of I-45. After the Pierce Elevated was built, did US 75 continue to be signed and routed along downtown streets, or was it re-routed to run concurrent with I-45 on the Pierce Elevated until it was decommissioned in the late 80s?
  14. Just Googled it after you mentioned it. I knew that both transit authorities were working on it after that story about the gap between the services. It's nice that they have it. I wonder if there would be demand for weekend service? With the seemingly unending construction on I-45 extending southward, a bus might be an alternative to being being the wheel and fighting construction related traffic, but I'd think the weekenders would prefer one bus on the entire route instead of a transfer.
  15. This strip center is complete and currently houses Wing Quarter Daiquiris and Creole Kitchen, Sugar Rush Too Cake Gallery, and Ray's BBQ will relocate to this new location from their current cramped digs at OST and Calhoun. This strip center's tenants aren't doing my waistline any favors.
  16. If you're using east of 288 and Good Hope as your demarcation lines, the proposed HEB is closer to the east side of 288 than it is to Good Hope. Furthermore, the HEB is also closer to the Harris County Psychiatric Center just across the bayou than it is to Good Hope. I still say that it's both Third Ward and the Medical Center area. Don't forget there's also a TMC themed directional sign at 288 and N. MacGregor, right in front of the proposed HEB: https://www.google.com/maps/@29.7132392,-95.3769739,3a,15.1y,310.19h,88.52t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s14sdN7lVbGWaPkc7s5w-Rw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656.
  17. Speaking as a lifetime resident of the neighborhood, you can argue that it's Greater Third Ward and part of Medical Center Area at the same time, albeit the extreme eastern fringe of the Medical Center Area. TMC properties exist on the east side of 288 at S. MacGregor and W. Leland Anderson. FYI: DeBakey has moved to the heart of the Medical Center. It's now on the site where the Shamrock Hotel used to be near Holcombe and Main. The old DeBakey is now the temporary home of Braeburn Elementary.
  18. I haven't seen any newer schematics besides the ones dated 2013. I do know that the interchange with 288 is going to be different than what the schematics provide. For one thing, the schematics show Holly Hall being depressed and 288 going over it, but as of now, a new Holly Hall overpass over 288 is under construction.
  19. The Burger King is staying. The ramp will curve around and enter Holcombe where Ardmore St. is now.
  20. I was driving south down 288 near 610 today and saw a sign that said a traffic shift was coming up this weekend. I think this is going to be the first instance of traffic using the new concrete pavement as I could see crews putting up center barriers on the newly laid pavement in the middle.
  21. I live in the area and that's been one of my favorite homes in the neighborhood.
