  1. I think it definitely IS a bad intersection, but at 5am, I can't imagine anything being unmanageable....unless of course you're driving an oversized vehicle you're not licensed to....
  2. Urbannomad- I do GIS as well, in the oil/gas biz. My background is geophysics, but got heavy into GIS while I was designing 3D seismic surveys and have never looked back.
  3. Wow, so much potential for this area. So, what changes are in the works that will make this picture look different in a few years? Wouldn't the Hardy Yards or the Intermodal be popping out from the north?
  4. I found this exhibit very fascinating and had no 'eww, gross' aftereffects from it. Its real, but also fake. Remember there is no organic matter left, all you're seeing is plastic and rubber. It just so happens to be anatomically correct plastic and rubber. Nature does the same thing too: don't forget there is no wood in petrified wood, its all silica replacement, and some fossils that we see on store shelves are pure stone, with no organics whatsoever all having been replaced by minerals over time. The ethics of this is an entirely different discussion of course...
  5. I wouldn't qualify myself as an expert, however I am in the mapping field. This is a reproduction, albeit still an older one. They say so in the listing, its just conveniently well hidden in the verbage.
  6. Lets not forget Ebay as well. Heres a nice one from 1915: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=250210530808
  7. Never heard of Fatburger before. I'll try it. Still.....it'll have to be pretty darn tasty to pry me away from Someburger. Many of these will see my business I am sure, but I'm still a Heights-centric person and would much rather have my money spent at the local patio cafes and locally owned shops than the big chains like this. Dacapos makes some amazing sandwiches and desserts, so I'm not sure how inclined I will be to pass that up to hit Potbellys. Theres something more enticing about eating a meal under a huge live oak tree than sitting indoors looking out into a crowded Target parking lot. I have no doubt though, that I-10 traffic will make every single one of these stores a huge success.
  8. For those that may not have seen this last month... http://youtube.com/watch?v=9rHsGguc_EA
  9. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have to chime in on the Seattle thing a bit. Yes it gets rain, but Houston gets more. The winters can be cool and damp, but thats what seasons are about. Houston winters are much nicer, Seattle summers are impossible to beat. But the reason I live in the Heights is because it reminds me of the artsy side of Seattle. The outdoor cafes, the walkable neighborhoods, the art galleries, the live music venues, the mature trees are all things I found back home. Honestly when my company told me they were transferring me here, I was not impressed. I had no desire to move to a city that offered nothing more than concrete for entertainment. This was 7 years ago. A lot has changed, including my perception of Houston. I'd still take Seattle over Houston any day, but H-town has grown on me (and will get better as mass transit and inner-loop development occurs) and I think the biggest battle that Houston has to win is perception to the masses. Perception trumps reality...Houston is not a laughing stock, but our city has to do a better job of marketing itself to the rest of the country that thinks we are. And to do that we need to find a reason to bring people here to visit. What does Houston offer that can't be found in other places? Once we have that identified, we need to exploit it.
  10. Right now they're on track for Mid-January according to the head office. It pretty much looks done to me, so I'm guessing its hiring, training, and organizing until then...
  11. I drove by here for this first time in a while and was glad to see the progess being made. Anyone know when this is scheduled to open? I think all I need is a Best Buy inside the loop to guarantee I never step foot outside 610 again.
  12. FYI, from the Chron this weekend: Heights apartments A $30 million apartment complex under construction on a century-old commercial site in the Heights is further proof of how this neighborhood is continuing its evolution from a quaint residential area to an urban enclave. The 195-unit development at 2125 Yale is being built on the site of the old Kaplan's-Ben Hur department store that closed about two years ago. Designed by Meeks + Partners for Allied Realty Services, the modern multifamily building, with four stories of apartments over two levels of parking, will sit on a 2-acre site between 21st and 22nd streets. One- and two-bedroom apartments will range from 700 square feet to 1,378 square feet. The sidewalks surrounding the building will be friendly to pedestrians, the developer said. The first occupants should be able to move in next August. Just a few blocks away is 19th Street, a commercial area that's become lined with hip boutiques and restaurants. Remembering old store But the developer isn't letting go of the past entirely. The clubhouse and leasing center will include restored southern yellow pine flooring that was salvaged from the retail building. Kaplan's department store was a family-owned Heights fixture since 1913 when it opened as a feed store. It eventually came to sell everything from clothing to glass trinkets and Christmas cards to bakeware.
  13. I agree, no main stream theatre is a good idea. I don't want to have something that ends up becoming a daycare for teens like the MarqE is. Anyone notice the large number of vacancies at that place?
  14. My bet is a Chick-Fil-A. I've seen many of them take up space next to Targets and if you look at the pdf for the recently finished Target on Westheimer, you will see it bears a similar shape to the Chick-Fil-A found in that parking lot. http://www.propertycommerce.com/flyers/flyer50.pdf
  15. The Texans want a larger cut of the profits to offset the reduced income from the ever diminishing fan base due to the stellar effort put on by the team this year.
  16. Noticed this was up and running now... http://www.sawyerheightslofts.com/ I'm particularly intrigued by the Meditation Garden and Reflection Pond they have. The pool looks to have a pretty neat shape too. I'll be very eager to tour this once they're ready to show...
  17. I just walked by the project at lunch and noticed the larger structure on the SE corner of San Jac and Dallas had (what looked like) a few exterior panels in place. It seems too early for them to start with the outer facade, but maybe they were testing some designs?
  18. Its right at the Sawyer intersection next to that Tin House that has a 'for sale' sign on it. They literally broke ground and I haven't seen much since then. It was just a grassy spot with survey markers on it, now they've turned up the dirt and thats about it. I haven't seen any workers so maybe they were contractually obligated to do something by a given time, so they churned up the grass and left the rest for later...
  19. I noticed they broke ground on the Panda Express this past weekend.
  20. I was at a performance this week. I've always liked Jones Hall, however the bathrooms need some serious work. They're in the dungeon and the staircase to get to them was elbow to elbow and once there, I encountered not only a lovely raw sewage smell, but a line for the guys restroom just so I could enjoy the odor that much longer. I have been to Jones many times and have never been in an acoustic dead zone, in fact I've always been amazed at how crisp the sound is in there. Keep Jones, update the restrooms.
  21. Was poking around the Property Commerce site and noticed they added updated pictures to the Sawyer Heights flyer. What caught my eye from the image on the first page was a rather large tract of land directly behind the Target that looks to be dozed and ready for development. Anyone know what's going on back there?
  22. Got a tenant notice here in Allen Center about the street closure. Its based on construction of a new parking garage which apparently will take 14 months to complete. They are building a tunnel so that would explain the road closure between Oct 8th and the end of the year. Attached are the plans for the closures. Phase_1___3_lane_closure_Bagby.pdf
