  1. Lets hope the upcoming developer of the Someburger corner recognizes this and gives us something worthy of the neighborhood...
  2. I noticed the (ugh) mattress place is open now. Would've preferred a nice patio cafe with lots of trees to serve those on the up n' coming bike path, but...y'know....this IS Houston.
  3. Yeah, the foundation for Chili's was poured a while back and they've been pretty active lately. I've seen survey stakes for other spots, but it seems like Chilis will be the next completed building.
  4. This spring I went on one of those home tours and got to see an original home from the 1800's with a live oak tree in the backyard they said was estimated to be 400 years old. In a city that has grown so large, and so quick, with a preponderance of builder attitudes of 'out with the old, in with the new', I'm curious where else in the city homes like this exist? And I'm not talking one or two homes here or there, but a good part of the Heights contains century plus homes that are well kept and in good shape. Given the quickness to which Houston as a city has decimated its own history, if there are other neighborhoods like this, let me know as I'd love to see them.
  5. All I'm saying is that at some point we have to draw the line and accept some level of identity for the neighborhood. In my opinion, the identity of the Heights should be defined by an abundance of historical homes, not a plethora of apartment complexes that may or may not be architecturally stimulating. There are plenty of places for apartment complexes along the perimeter of the Heights, but I think its a near sighted solution to support their occupation on any block or corner that has been neglected just as a quick fix to a blighted corner. Driving down Heights Blvd it amazes me to see so many gorgeous historical homes and right next door is an apartment complex that is so completely out of character for the area. Is there a single person here that wouldn't like to jog or bike down Heights Blvd and see nothing but classic victorians one after another? I have yet to utter the words 'oh thats a beautiful apartment complex' anywhere in the Heights, whether it charges $1000 per month or $300, but hardly a day goes by that I don't say that about a house somewhere in the area. For those that appreciate the French Quarter and all of its historical glory, how enticing would it be to have a 6 or 7 story apartment complex jutting out of the middle of it just because a developer deemed it economically advantageous? If a few developers all decided to do that same thing, then what does the French Quarter become? Okay, its extreme but the point is still there. I just think the Heights with its historical significance deserves to be unique in the city, and there's nothing unique about apartment buildings.
  6. I've thought about it, and I still want to gripe. I agree this is a great way to get new blood into the neighborhood and I guess if things like this were to happen I would prefer a condo since an owner takes more pride in their home than renters which tend to be more transient. I'm still not convinced this is a good thing, after all the Skylane apts over on Taylor/I-10 in the Woodland Heights is a peach of a dwelling. What a lovely monument to urban decay that place is. Point is, the Heights is a neighborhood built with a vision of single family homes. I support that vision.

  8. I still wouldn't be surprised to see a Best Buy confirmed for the location by year end....
  9. Nothing on the website, but given all the earth movers out there, I'm guessing the other buildings will be going up shortly. The Chilis lot seems to be groomed and surveyed so I wouldnt be surprised to see that foundation being poured very soon.
  10. Considering how long its taken for Sawyer Heights to build, I'd say anything here in 2008 is overly optimistic. Oh, lets not forget the old HISD lot on Richmond/Weslayan....wow, its been a year and what beautiful piles of dirt they've created.
  11. The whole foods in seattle has large underground parking so maybe they'll plan for something like that here. I know theres a flooding issue in Houston, but I've also seen some stores that have rooftop parking as well......I can't imagine wfmi building a flagship grocery store there without planning for sufficient parking, even if the drawings dont seem to depict any.
  12. I hope so. The image shown at http://www.mfein.com/comm.php seems to suggest a flat roof though, almost warehouse style...
  13. Looks like they've reached the top of the complex on the east side. IMO, I wish they would go up one more floor just to obscure the cement parking garage that pops out of the middle of the complex.

  15. I doubt I would support a Walmart in the area...now, if it were a Sams Club, I might be a little more inclined to partake in that one. I think thats the better choice.
  16. I hope Walmart never steps foot in the area. Ugh, total trash. Considering pepsi and coke seem to coincidentally offer the same fruity drink variations at the same time (vanilla, cherry, etc), I can only assume each company spies on their competition with regularity. And theres no doubt that Target has been surpassing its sales goals so its entirely possible. I hope not, but its possible.
  17. There was a couple of days there where a temporary American Mattress sign was up next to the Payless, but now its down again. So I'm guessing they'll populate next. I imagine the Chilis will start once they MFein project makes some serious headway. The new I-10 access road is scheduled for 2008 and I think its safe to say the Rails-to-Trails wont be done until then as well, so I expect a rather slow remainder of the year.
