  1. Actually, I know way more Montrose folks that have moved to the Heights. I dont know a single Woodlands person that made the move. Its not snobbery to be vocal with neighborhood concerns. So I assume you wouldn't oppose a sex shop being built next to your house then? You'd just be quiet because being vocal about it would be considered too snobby right, and I assume you're not a hypocrite.
  2. Since most of what I'm reading on here are opinions, here's mine. I dont want a Walmart here. Do I think it will attract poor people? Not really. Criminals? Maybe, but nothing I'd fret over. My convertible was broken into in the new Kroger parking lot last weekend in broad daylight and I'll still shop there. Traffic? Sure, but I live in the Woodland Heights and Target hasn't resulted in traffic jams down my street. I just plain don't want one. I moved to the Heights 4 years ago, from the Dunvale area. Yes, THAT Dunvale. The one everyone uses as the antiWalmart model. Its a good model too, that place was a mess. Do I think this will become another Dunvale? Lol, not really. But the truth is none of us know exactly what this Walmart will do to the neighborhood. Its all speculation. But I moved into the Heights and fell in love with the area in part because places like Walmart didnt exist, and now 4 years later, have some hefty financial investments in the neighborhood. So from a monetary perspective, I want to protect my investments and I don't speculate Walmart will help with that. I left the suburbs to get away from that culture, and although I'm not one of those folks that will be showing up at every event picketing the Walmartian Gods, I will have my piece and let Walmart know as a resident I will not support their business. And its not just Walmart either. I could care less about their ethics, its more the big box constant concrete mentality. I don't think a Hobby Lobby is a good use of that space either. I think given the strong antiWalmart sentiment being expressed here and on the web, I really don't fear for our little mom and pops in the neighborhood. The Heights has a neighborhood loyalty I have not experienced anywhere else, and I think that loyalty will more than ensure the continued profitability of our little shops. My money will still go to C+D, I will still shop on 19th, and I will still ensure that much of my disposable income stays in the neighborhood. Walmart needs to know that. And I think that's where the power of the thousands of anti Walmart people can and will make a difference.
  3. While the image may be considered 'crap', this part does seem true as I've read somewhere that these apartments are part of the sale and will be demolished as part of the project.

  5. See page 2 of this document Granted the dates are wrong, but it does suggest a lease has been signed....
  6. For a while there, Northline Commons was supposed to be getting a WalMart. Wonder if thats still the case. If so, this spot wouldn't make any sense at all.
  7. I heard that huge child care facility on Heights and...7th?...is moving in there. I dont have kids, but heard from a parent. I dont know the name of the kid care but it takes up like 3 houses just south of Donovan Park.
  8. King Biscuit (because I can walk there and they have great Jazz on Tuesdays). Food is standard, but really good when they get the outdoor grill going. Empire Seafood/Chinese: everything. This is seriously good food. Sweet Temptation: everything. FANTASTIC Italian for a third the price of the other fancy spots Patrenellas: lasagna. Berryhills: easy and wifey likes the fish tacos. Spanish Flowers: gotta love 24hrs Chilosos Taco House: seriously, 12x per year, I probably hit this quota in about 2 months. Carter and Cooley: sandwiches Stella Sola: so far on par to hit it 12 times Dacapos: sandwiches and custom cakes Onion Creek: not so much because the food is good, but I usually need something to offset the pints with friends. Wow...looking at this I think I have a foodie problem. Actually......its not problem at all.
  9. This makes me happy. I will be even happier if they can get the Heights bike trail to connect to this. Studemontrose is really dangerous for bikers north of Washington Ave.
  10. Its colder here than it was in Vancouver

  11. I guess Fatburger is out now as they're not shown on the latest occupancy plans. Looks like a Southwells Hamburgers is setting up next to the pet store though....
  12. My neighbor put her daughter up in there so she could be close to home, but far enough away that they dont have to run into each other on a regular basis. Anyways, she (the mom) reports that its VERY nice inside and her daughter is extremely happy in the location.
  13. I can go to Messina Hof and buy wine at the winery, so I should be able to go to St Arnolds and buy beer at the brewery. Attention politicians: this is not rocket science.
  14. Website updated: now includes Sport Clips, Nail Salon, Dentist. http://www.propertycommerce.com/flyers/flyer44.pdf
  15. Hi, yes, I'd like to have my flat tire fixed and a couple Hail Mary's to go. Thanks.
  16. Its possible, but the kitchen is wide open for viewing and they had all the raw ingredients out and were actively cutting them up and making food when I went. I suspect since they didn't have a facility during last LITH to make these on sight, the chef could have pre-made them. Nothing I had suggested it was anything but fresh, and the fried shrimp was most certainly made on the spot. The only thing I saw that gave any indication of a prepared food was the sausage used in the jambalaya. That was store bought. (and wasn't andouille either). There's some great Texas sausages out there, I definitely think they could buy locally for that.
  17. Yeah, I was there for opening lunch on Friday. The food is really good. I had a fried shrimp po'boy w/ spicy fries, my friend had fried green tomatoes and jambalaya. The po'boy was really good, fresh bread, about 5-6 decent sized shrimps. Fries were adequate, like other spicy fries. The jambalaya was really tasty, but for $8 we only got a small scoop. Expensive for just rice. I HOPE that was a mistake as they had literally just opened and everyone was trying to figure out their place in the greater scheme, so I hope we ended up with a smaller portion that what should normally be served. The menu is limited now, no crawfish on weekends (yet). No Abita beer (whats up with that?). No bread pudding. I suspect those will come in due time, they just have to get used to things. I'm curious what others thought, but its a great addition to the hood imo.
  18. I thought this slightly appropriate given the content here.... http://www.hotchickswithdouchebags.com/
  19. Big Mamou: not open yet Bedford: been twice and really liked it. The portions aren't large at all, but the quality of the food is A+. I've heard many complaints about the service there, but the both times I've been its been very attentive. The noise levels aren't nearly what Glass Wall is and the price level is fairly comparable. Textile: haven't done that one yet.
  20. I read that the budget approved yesterday for rail did not set aside anything for the Intermodal. So I guess it's still a long way off?
  21. Oh, much lower than that. The decor is nothing fancy and the ambiance is nothing like Glass Wall/Bedford/Shade. Its on Airline which isn't even remotely on par with what you're seeing along Studewood, but this is a place where you go for the food, not the fancy artwork on the wall. It is a small place, decor is minimal, but unless you're in the hip, chic, trendy Uptown crowd, this place will appease your tastebuds.
  22. Oh yes. Many times already. Both sit down and take out. The food is fantastic and in my opinion rivals many of the high dollar Italian restaurants in the city, but for a whole lot less.
  23. Just got a memo saying that Hess is taking over the building fully and it will be renamed Hess Tower which will be the E&P headquarter for the company. Occupancy in 2011.
  24. Ugh, I know. I watched those being built and thought there should have been a bit of greenery left somewhere on that block.
