  1. They started tearing up the concrete in the San Jacinto @ Polk corner of the Polk-Main-Clay-San Jacinto lot.
  2. Waugh and Memorial--its the AIG Building, right? I did see crane yesterday, but I drove past it just a moment ago and the crane is gone but there is something else there. I have no idea what it is.
  3. So...wasn't there supposed to be a big announcement or groundbreaking sometime last week?
  4. "Beware of the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry, [who] infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How will I know? For this I have done. And I am Julius Caesar."
  5. I agree. I ate at the Hard Rock in BP when I first moved back to Houston after college. The food was over priced and the service sucked. If I want to spend $30 for a hamburger and a beer I'll go to the Men's Club, thank you.
  6. That looks great! I would think that a white light during a new moon and a blue light during a full moon makes more sense. That is, you would think that you would want the trail more illuminated when there is no moon. Of course, the dark light does "reflect" the darkness of a new moon. What was I talking about?
  7. I remember seeing that guy on Main when the Super Bowl was in town. At least, we saw 'a' guy walking around in a cowboy hat and whitie-tighties.
  8. I'm not sure if it "special," but I am sure that it is a really great place to see live music. It
  9. Not all of them, I don't think. I guess I thought I was missing out on something since people began to complain about it. Thanks though. For what it is worth (2 cents), I think the project looks great--the more trees and places for people to chill out and people watch, the better.
  10. I think the idea is to make Amtrak "relevent [sic] to Houston." The fact that "current survice [sic] is a joke" is probably due to the fact that there is no station like the one being planned. Not to torpedo you, but I think sometimes people get too carried away with complaining on this site and miss looking at the big picture.
  11. I agree with you about the look of the federal building. It was authorized for construction during the Kennedy Administration. I worked there last summer, and I was told that it was designed like that to be able to withstand an attack from the Russians. It is crazy; the court rooms are nice, but the ones on the lower levels have random columns in the middle of the room. Again, their there to be able to hold the building up after a bomb or something.
  12. Where was that Hard Rock on Kirby? I was talking about that the other day, and I couldn't remeber were it was. I was thinking something like that Mia Thais place or something, but I have no idea. I was a long time ago when I went there. They do have a very small selection considering the selection of meats and cheeses they offer, but the Turkey-Bacon Sub is on point.
  13. It is definitely Oriental out there, but I doubt that anyone (that lives within the loop) would use "Chinatown" to describe any other area of town other than the area just east of downtown. I'm not saying that it matters to me personally, but if you are using the moniker as a tourist interest, which we most certainly are, the Bellaire(ish) area will just have to deal with it. I concede that there are almost no cool destinations in Chinatown except The Meridian and that big Chinese buffet, but it is nice to have a historical Chinatown near downtown as opposed to way the heck outside the loop were nothing matters.
  14. Is this the same high rise as that huge model in the Galleria? Wow, I haven't been to Galveston in almost 10 years.
  15. I agree 100%. As far as design, I hope that the architects consider the impact that the railroad has played in the history of Houston, and that they create a structure that does not drastically contrast with the older buildings along that side of downtown.
  16. I seem to remember this being a past topic, but I couldn't find it. Nevertheless, does anyone know who and/or what is moving into the previously vacant section of Bayou Place? As many of you have probably seen, they have gutted the building and have taken out most of the external walls, which I guess will be replaced with glass. It looks like an excellent place for an office. Also, I finally put an icon on my personal profile, and I wanted to see it.
  17. Its more of a lounge than a bar. I went there a week or two ago, its actually pretty cool.
  18. I am not sure that the new station will be duplicative. As I see it, the new 'GCS' will be just that, a major transportation hub. The already constructed building, however, I think is more of an administrative structure than a big bus stop. I think that having a beautiful, landmark-quality building to connect all of Houston's mass transit is long overdue, particularly in downtown.
  19. Let us not forget that there is a 10-year leasing agreement b/w Central Parking and EDG. I couldn't imagine a firm signing a 10-year lease on a parking garage before they were absolutely sure they were going ahead with construction.
