  1. I found this photo dated May 1964. It was a swimming class that I was in at that YMCA. On the back in faded ink is stamped (I think): "Work of Art Studio, 5701 Edgemoor, Houston 36, Texas, MOhawk 5-4793." Maybe someone has a phone book from back then to check and see if this number is right. I wonder if that place is still in operation after over 40 years ago? Who knows? Maybe someone out there knows one or more of these guys in the photo.
  2. Wal-Mart is good at putting other retailers out of business and buying out others. Why don't they buy out all malls and call all of them WALMALL?
  3. Behind their ears. But the last time I went to a bowling alley, I saw that the bowler's scores were automatically kept, I assume by some kind of a computer system. They didn't have to write down anything. After the ball hit the pins, the number of pin knocked down and the position of the pins left standing up was displayed on the overhead monitor.
  4. Back in the early 1960s, my dad received his instrument rating at an airport on the side of what was then Houston International Airport. I remember him telling me that back then he went and played golf at Ellington AFB. I think he also said something about an airport in Pearland. I was about to ask the stupid question: "Has any airplane ever landed at an abandoned airport"? But when I think of that airline plane in Kentucky that tried to take off on the wrong runway, that might not have been such a stupid question after all.
  5. Yes, I think I remember an article in Monday or Tuesday's Houston Chronicle about Luby's shareholders wanting Pappas to sell some stocks or something like that. The two Luby's in Port Arthur are still open. One is in Central Mall and the other one is on the corner of State Highways 73 & 347.
  6. The Luby's in Orange didn't last long. It closed down only after a few years. Now a restaurant called "Richard's" has moved into the Luby's building. If Luby's didn't last in that location because of access off of IH-10, then I wonder why Richard's think that they will do any better?
  7. Q: What's the best way to avoid rape? A: Beat off the attacker.
  8. To me, the only "professional" sport that "sucks" away your soul is wrestling.
  9. Yes, in most cases when a building is left vacant, homeless people usually break into it, making it to where nobody wants to buy or lease it.
  10. You sure know your high school football. District 21-4A is small with only three schools. I remember my high school playing Houston Smiley and Pasadena Dobie back in the 1970s. So Houston has a total of 25 public high schools? Is North Shore HS within the Houston city limits? I'm curious as to where it is exactly. It must be in a district different from 20-5A.
  11. In today's Business section of the Beaumont Enterprise is an article entitled "Digital TV will take over." "On February 18, 2009, tens of millions of televisions that are not equipped to receive digital signals will become useless pieces of furniture." According to what I read, I will have to get a converter box because all I have is older TVs. And I'm not about to go out and buy the new digital kind. But I might get a converter box only if this part of the article comes to fruition: "After the first of the year, the government will be making available to each household two coupons worth $40 each that can be used to buy two converter boxes." I did say "might." I know that I'm not the only person with an older, non-digital TV. I ask the other people out there in the same position as I am. Are you ready for the transition? Are you going to buy a box or a new TV? I might try to quit watching TV altogether. Regular network TV is mostly garbage. Cable/dish is expensive and far-fetched. I just might start listening to radio 24/7.
  12. Yes, Parkdale Mall over here used to have a Walgreen's with a diner and a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. Both are now gone. There's a Fuddrucker's hamburger restaurant in the parking lot.
  13. It sounds complex. You really know your schools. Here in Beaumont, it was better back when I was in high school back in the 1970s. There were six public high schools in two districts. Now there is just one district and three high schools. From what I read on "5atexasfootball.com," Westbrook is in a district that has schools from Baytown and the Houston area in it.
  14. I thought that State Highway 225 goes through Pasadena, which is on the southside/shore of the ship channel and that Galena Park is the northside/shore. Well, are Galena Park and North Shore High Schools both in HISD?
  15. I read that Rice University is located at 6100 South Main. That's an easy address to remember a college by. Does the University of Houston also have an easy-to-remember address?
  16. For the upcoming high school football season, will all of the public high schools in Houston be in Class 5a? Also, is North Shore High School in or around Galena Park? Or is it Galena Park High School? Many years ago I knew a girl who attended Galena Park High School. I don't recall her ever mentioning North Shore High School. I think it's good that the Houston high schools share stadiums rather than one being at each campus. I assume that means that some teams play on Friday nights and others play on Saturday nights.
  17. Yes, it's still there on South 11th Street. The family of a woman I went to high school with has owned it for many years. And they're not Mexican. Their last name is LeJeune.
  18. Has anyone ever walked on the top of the roof of the Astrodome? (I'm talking about after it was completed; I know that the construction crew was up there).
  19. That candy was OK. It tasted like you were simply putting a spoonful of watered-down brown sugar into your mouth.
  20. The rule of thumb is to stay one car length behind the car in front of you for every 10mph you're traveling. In the case of Houston freeways, that would be the length of eight cars. Most people don't observe that. That's why there's so many people getting hit in the rear.
  21. I've never seen a survey of the "best" traffic areas. That's because there are not any. 95% of all drivers are rude and crazy. Nobody wants to wait or slow down for anything. Even in rural areas you'll get run over. Stay in a big city like Houston. You'll acquire experience, skill, and patience.
