  1. You answered my question very well. It sounds like today's common business practice of merging/outsourcing/sub-contracting, etc.
  2. Thanks. Yes, I went to Busch Gardens back when it first opened. What stands out in my head is the huge goldfish, and the free cup of beer they gave my dad. I guess Texans want to drink but not make beer. I remember when Pearl and Lone Star were exclusively Texan. I don't hear or see much about either one anymore. Have they bit the dust?
  3. That article said that the Sheraton was to be made into a "luxury" hotel? I thought that Sheraton Hotels have always been classified as "luxury." AARP classifies them as "upscale."
  4. Here's the legend: "Siddartha's (the founder of Buddhism) mother (in around 560 B.C.E.) dreamed that when a white elephant's trunk touched her side, she became pregnant. The unborn Buddha, then existing four cosmic levels above the human plane of existence, in the Heaven of the Satisfied Gods, had been waiting for a pure and worthy mother to appear on earth."
  5. Yes, newspapers make most of their money from advertising. I don't think the Chronicle would stay in business very long if all they received was the 50 cents that a newspaper costs. Years ago, to my surprise, I found out that fast food restaurants make their biggest profits from the sale of drinks, not food.
  6. I didn't know the legal implications involved. On another thread, someone posted an item that I mentioned out of the Guiness Book of World Records about the Astroworld Hotel. That's why I thought that it might be OK.
  7. On page B1 in today's Chronicle, there a photo of a jogger in Reveille Park. It says that a trail is being built which will extend from Milby Park to Scottcrest Park. On page B2 is a map showing where the hike-and-bike trail will be. The article says that the Houston Parks Board paid $950,000 for 27.2 acres on Sims Bayou for the site. The article begins with: "It'll be the center park of a 14-mile chain of seven." Does that means that the trail will be 14 miles long? If so, it would take about a full day to hike its length, a few hours to ride a bike from one end to the other. It looks interesting.
  8. Can you scan and post things from it for us to see?
  9. Excellent find. I'll ask the librarian here if she'll order it. I would think that a lot of you on the forum will want to buy it.
  10. Just my belief, out of common courtesy, I've always believed that people with infants shouldn't take them to an indoor movie. That's as inconsiderate as sticking a piece of chewing gum underneath the seat.
  11. You were lucky. Most babies would cry their heads off while at a drive-in movie theatre. On YouTube.com, there's some vintage drive-in theatre intermission commercials. One of them said that free bottle warmer service for babies was free at the concession stand.
  12. From the brochure that I picked up at the Texas Tourist Bureau: "Located in the heart of downtown, Hyatt Regency Houston offers sophisticated elegance, luxurious accommodations and state-of-the-art amenities in a setting of unparalleled convenience." The Hyatt Regency probably made a lot of money from ENRON executives before that company folded.
  13. Apparently it's no rumor. On page D1 in today's Houston Chronicle it says that Hyatt's owners are "pumping $35 into the property for more meeting space, a new restaurant and guest room renovations."
  14. I don't recall seeing a Felix Chevrolet in the Houston Chronicle. Is it affliated with Felix Mexican Restaurants?
  15. I remember that cartoon of Felix the Cat. "Whenever he gets in a fix, he reaches into his bag of tricks."
  16. What was Trans Lux? When I hear Lux, a remember a brand of bar soap many years ago.
  17. I've never heard of a degree in Commerce. Is it another name for Business? Yes, the only names that sound familiar are Dial and Ryan. I think Tommy Kramer is the most recent. I read that he ended up having big problems with drugs and alcohol. Speaking about the former Southwest Conference, is Southern Methodist University still around?
  18. How did Rice's football team do for the Fall 2007 season? When I was watching the Cotton Bowl, the sportscaster said that back in the 1954 game someone came off of the bench and tackled a Rice kickoff returner.
  19. I didn't know that Kroger was big in Houston. Today's Chronicle says that Wal-Mart Supercenter has surpassed Kroger in market-share. I thought that Randall's and H.E.B. Pantry were the two most popular supermarkets in Houston.
  20. Yes, you'd be doing a "ball buster" anytime you jumped or dove off of the diving board.
  21. Wow! The suburbs of Houston are bigger than I thought. Spring Branch has that many schools? Someone on this forum said that Cypress had several high schools. What is a "magnet" school?
  22. Yes, when I was in high school back in the 1970s, the high heel was in vogue. But I remember the heel being high, not the sole (I was always a "heel" back in high school; I had many "arch" enemies). I saw a pair of two-tone Giorgio Brutini shoes on ShoeBuy.com I'd like to buy that looks like those (without the elevation, of course).
  23. Is Spring Branch HS in HISD or in its own district?
