  1. Green carpet? Oh well it worked. Here are some of the winners! http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidate...E4AD12520081114 Looks like this guy got the motherload! and theres our won Bill White just a grinning!
  2. Giant inflatable puppets of Charlie McCarthy would frighten kids away (me too)
  3. Thanks for bringing up The Roseland and Aragon Ballroom. I did see a pic of the Aragon exterior on a website (Google) but it was of the fire that ruined it around 1947? In fact there were some excellent interiors of the Aragon of a New Year's dance, very clear and everyone is dressed to the nines. Sure wish I had a time machine about now. Ironically, The Houston Aragon Ballrooom burned just like the more famous Aragon Ballroom on Park Pier on the West Coast. Below is a tiny interior of Houston's Aragon B. Time to dance!
  4. Wow! You must be psychic! Just the other day I was jogging mom's memory again and she said the local kids (teens) used to walk over to The Roseland for a dance matinee as she called it. You were allowed entry to dance to your favorite swing music till you passed out & without a chaperone! I think she said it was during the day approx 2:00 PM to whatever, just be sure I asked where it was and she said Franklin. I wonder when it vanished? Had to have been there in mid to late 40's. At that time all they had were those giant electric fans for cooling off after dancing like crazy. The crowds would huddle around the fans like bee's. We really have it good nowadays! PS, you may want to glance at Houston's Orchestra's and Ballrooms topic for pics.
  5. All of this area is depressing. The last of glory days were in late 70's early 80's. In fact several nearby stores are shutting down. That raunchy Burger King is soooooo outdated. Go inside and its 1975! and quite filthy. Almeda Mall is like a horse that needs to be shot due to a broken leg that wont mend. The party fled for Fairmont Parkway shopping centers and Baybrook Mall years ago. At least there you feel like your in 2008. No time warps involved.
  6. I work in Westchase District. Try the nice apts that begin at Wilcrest/Westheimer then try the others all along this stretch going West towards the Walmart nearby. They vary from reasonable to very expensive because of the million $ homes nearby. Best pick up a local guide for this area. Best of luck. PS, better get one now because this area is booming in growth and jobs.
  7. Blow darts come to mind. PS, there have been several threads of some of the most hideous advertising nightmares in and around the city. I still say 1960 is the worse offender. Even worse at night. Like Las Vegas strip on LSD.
  8. One of the ones I had called several weeks ago initially said they were at over 900 call backs. SO, I called them a week ago and now they say no estimates until 2009. May as well put a recording that says "leave us alone"
  9. I think this film opens today or tomorrow? I think I read once that Bond films have never ever been nominated for any Oscars? Kind of funny/sad.
  10. I could swear that low down dive has been closed for about 5 yrs? I had to grin remembering it was once called The Red Bull Lounge in early 80's. We always said it would be a great idea to build a morgue next door and a funeral home next to that since the death count was so high at that dump. Seemed like every other weekend it was the site of stabbings, shootings, drug busts, etc. I often wished if there were a train derailment we would cross our fingers that the train would roll right on top of that blasted bldg. Couldnt help but notice the other day that chunks of the bldg are missing and has big holes in the walls. There was a former council member that said she would rid the East End of such pathetic derelic hangouts but once she got elected she fled for Austin and just giggled all the way like "see ya later suckers".
  11. Even after mentioning the old Lockwood Inn Barbecue place on Lockwood at 610 several times on Haif, its like losing a family member. That bad! Even when I seldom drive past, all thats left is the sign and post but the place burned to the ground decades ago. The links were killer and the sauce they poured over them was undescribeable. I am crying now. This place was just a few blocks from McReynold's Jr High (Indian territory) as some long time Houstonians may have called it. The competition barbecue place Cozy Kitchen was across the street but never could compare to Lockwood, never. Ok now I am really hungry!
  12. Start building townhomes beginning at Eastwood Transit Center all the way down 1300 Munger street to Dumble then continue all the way down Dumble to Telephone Road. Would have fantastic appeal to drivers on 45 especially for the Metro riders that make short stops at the Transit Ctr. They would consider living here instead of those looooong commutes. The taller the better 3-4 story townhomes for single or couple ONLY.
  13. You win the grand prize! Let's hope she doesnt go as far as pulling her pants down exposing her privates and shouting obsceneties to the ones that dont give her cash. Boy I would pay $$$ to see her with a pipe hanging from her lips, bottle of MadDog 20/20 & all red eyed. Now thats reality TV!
  14. Yes indeed! Galveston waters are not exactly a tourist attraction (unless you are desperate) so the island may as well become a gambling playground. So back to topic, was Trump planning or considering building a tower or casino there? His clothing line is quite cool I must say. Wearing one of his shirts now.
  15. Guess no one wants to touch this one? Imagine if all of the council got in on the act? Great photo op.
  16. This type of funky/cheesy advertising is getting out of hand and Should be banned. Surprised adult book stores havent started placing inflatable women on top of the buildings. While they are at it they should ban those ugly inflatable things people put on the front lawns when the kids have birthday party. Looks very 3rd world. What happened to back yards? Hide that junk.
  17. Of course not, you dont seem like the trigger happy, gun-slinging, Annie Oakley type. This breed is commonly seen further down Telephone @ Tel Wink Grill and beyond all the way to Hobby Airport. Swanky joints like The Blue Cat Club, the Oriental Lounge, et al, appeal to some of our cowboys that pull into town on occasion. The wild, wild Southwest as they call it in these here parts. Like the old saying goes " For every broken beer bottle & curb on Telephone Road, there's a broken heart". Bang, bang, Yeehah!
  18. There is a topic on Haif from about a year ago? Remember tragedy quite well, got my driver license that yr, drew picture of that disaster and hung on Driver's Ed simulation trailer on school campus. Got Best auto related Drawing, wish I had saved now.
  19. All along Harrisburg or Telephone Rd. Bullet proof vest not included. But seriously if that person is dying for a drink and company just head to Midtown. At least he/she will have a choice of pretty women, unless prefers that Harrisburg/Telephone kind of gal/thing, etc.
  20. This is Houston related so here it is. Like the arcticle reads he helped shape the downtown skyline. John Harris, an executive vice president at the Hines real estate firm that helped shape Houston's skyline, died Saturday of complications from cancer treatment. He was 76. In the 42 years he worked for the international firm, the longtime Houston resident worked on more than 100 buildings all over the world, said company founder and chairman Gerald D. Hines. Harris joined the firm in the 1960s when Hines hired him to oversee construction of his first skyscraper, One Shell Plaza. Harris went on to launch the firm's Conceptual Construction Group, which was involved in the design and critique of all of Hines' major buildings. link to full article Edit: Deleted copyrighted material, added link dbigtex56
  21. Not really sure what the reasoning was behind this project but the whole country is just wild about it and so are many other nearby countries. I wish you all could read Spanish or Italian since there there are hundreds of rave comments on another forum...an International forum that is. Cuatro mean 4 and torres is bulls. 4 bulls all in a row. I just wish I were there right now. I still have a dream that one day Houston could build a similar project just space them out more. The corridor driving in from 610 at 45 into downtown would be perfect! Kind of like staff waiting in line to receive guests into our beautiful downtown. Its night time in Madrid right now. http://www.torresmadrid.com/blog/ http://revver.com/video/492090/cuatro-torr...ss-area-madrid/
  22. Everything noted here is postively true. That HISD property has room for growth. There are adjacent streets in the nabe that have homes that need to be torn down. So there is room for expansion. As far as certain civic groups are concerned, I can state that some are more welcoming than others. We were very fortunate to have our Super Neighborhood meetings at the convent. In most cases attendees had to leave their arrogance at the door before meetings began and the sister in charge kept most in line. Kind of like Catholic School for adults. Hee hee. I was warned of a certain group but went to the meet anyway. Very, very nosey and obnoxious group only fixated on their specific streets and to hell with local nabes wanting to assist. I have known other long time residents that attempted to join in but these new arrival young ones wouldnt let you break in the loop. People become disenchanted and back away to fend for themselves. Same old cycle. Back to topic though, I think that title Battle Kroger is hilarious, had never heard before. Good Lord its very dated, had numerous pals in High School that worked there and that was 1979!
  23. The residents in and around Broadmoor really need to ban together and "voice" in person and beyond this forum. No one seems to ever act on it? I grew up in Broadmoor and we used to walk to Weingartens just blocks to the north/east. Maybe we can create a HUGE banner and fly around over head and have arrows pointing down at where Weingartens used to be? Here is the idea, level the old (still standing) Weingarten bldg and build a large modern state of the art grocery store. This local is PRIME people! What does it take divine intervention? In fact the field behind Macy's Warehouse would be perfect! Everyone would benefit from all around. Between Cage Elementary and Macy's to be exact. Let's build I say!
  24. Tomorrow night at House of Blues is a BIG kick off party. Texas Latin GRAMMY Reception November 11, 2008 The House of Blues, Cambridge & Foundation Room, 1204 Caroline St., Houston, 7
