  1. Good points. I wonder if a soccer field would really be a moneymaker. One approach that MLS likes is what they did in Dallas (actually Frisco). Pizza Hut Park has a lot of practice fields adjacent to the stadium that can be used by other local teams. Rather than just have a soccer pitch, it is meant to be sort of a regional soccer/entertainment center. If that is the direction the Dynamos take here, then Reliant might not be optimal because of the relative lack of nearby residential. From that viewpoint, the Delmar location might be better, although it lacks light rail access.
  2. Good job on the scenario. Scary, but it makes sense. The storm that destroyed Galveston in 1900 made it to downtown Houston, but obviously there was a lot less to damage back then.
  3. Looks like Valentina gets to be the alpha pup in that pair.
  4. Marfrelees gets it for Most Embarrassing Bar to be seen in. Best Irish Pub - Kenneallys on Shepherd (as a bit of disclosure, I think I am probably their longest continuous customer ). Best CD store - Cactus (RIP). Only store in town that had a section devoted to surf music. Best coffee joint - Diedrichs. Free wi-fi, background music is soft classical instead of Starbuck's cheesy adult contemporary CD of the week, and they let you buy something without trying to sell you something else ("would you like a pastry with that?") Only complaint is that seating is limited, and they fill up.
  5. Gotta love The Scoop's scoop, too, if it pans out! That's great! Is the retail that is being developed the "Ben Milam shops, unique in all of Texas," like on the sign that used to be there?
  6. I'll start. Best hardware store - Buffalo Hardware on Westheimer at Kirby. Unlike Best Buy, it is small enough to navigate in a hurry, but it has an amazing variety of things from light bulbs to cookware. Also unlike Best Buy, there is a staff of friendly people who come up to you to help you find what you need. It's too bad these kind of stores have become so rare. No, they're not paying me to advertise.
  7. Well, I'm not sure they want to be taken as seriously as the NHL! Seriously, I just don't think the demand is there for a lot of expansion. Even in the current 12-team league Kansas City is barely making it, and Dallas I believe was marginal for a few years. I just don't think there's a big need to try to match other leagues in the number of teams to be taken seriously. Remember, there's an argument that MLB has over-expanded, and their games draw a LOT more than MLS.
  8. How upset can you really get with someone who is just trying to save bunnies?
  9. Yeah, I saw that and found it a little surprising. This is a good bit away from Center City Philadelphia, probably on the very edge of the metro area, and getting there will require Pennsylvanians to fight bridge traffic to get to Jersey. I hope they do well, but at first glance the location seems to work against them. That being said, it makes sense to get a private developer to build the stadium as part of the overall billion dollar development, and there's no reason that approach couldn't work here as well. Notice they are leaving the door open and saying some public money might still be needed. My other thought was that MLS is trying to expand too fast. I know markets like Philadelphia are attractive, but the league has already had to contract once. You would think they would be hesitant about continued expansion plans.
  10. Agreed, but only to a point. The complication is that downtown parking doesn't function as a single market, because people are willing to pay more for convenient parking. That means there can still be marginal economic value to developers to put parking in any desirable location, so that parking vacancies increase further away from major buildings or downtown locations, while parking places that are seen as convenient can continue to charge a premium. In other words, increased supply may not decrease average parking prices across downtown, just redistribute them. Of course, the benefit is that the economic value of peripheral parking will fall, perhaps leading to more development, but this has to be balanced against the cost of having downtown flooded with parking.
  11. Of course! The lobby was significantly remodeled along with the rest of the building a few years ago. Originally escalators led from the Travis entrance up to the second floor banking lobby. At the top of the escalators there was a large Rufino Tamayo mural called "America". I'm not sure what happened to it.
  12. Look, citykid has been posting here a long time and he's no Houston-basher. All this topic was doing was reviewing Atlanta. In any event, we still don't want to have flame wars.
  13. Look, if he wants to post about Atlanta, that's within the scope of this forum and he's free to do so. If people don't like it, or aren't interested in reading it, than just ignore it. It's not necessary to attack other members because you don't happen to like their topics. Sheeesh..
  14. Keep it civil. No flaming other members here. Nobody wants to read personal attacks.

  16. Hey thanks for all the ideas guys. I already passed them on.
  17. I don't think any final configuration has been determined for Hardy Yards, so these are just renderings rather than a plan at this point. Bizjournal article: Link
  18. What I would like to see would be traffic lanes cut back and cheap, on-street, diagonal parking spaces added wherever possible. This has already occurred on some streets as a result of Cotswold. Doing this would help encourage street-level retail, earn the city some money, and reduce the economic incentive for developers to build more parking garages. Surface lots are an eyesore, but the city could at least require they use porous pavers that would reduce water runoff and allow some grass.
