City Hall And Market House In Downtown
EspersonBuildings replied to Highrise Tower's topic in Historic Houston
I don't know too much but agree, there were several City Halls/Market Houses in the beginning. I believe this one in its final years was a bus station with the top of the towers being removed. -
The Texas Company At 710 Main St.
EspersonBuildings replied to Highrise Tower's topic in Historic Houston
The architect was possibly Sanguinet & States, a Fort Worth, Texas firm, according to Jim Parsons of GHPA. Interesting that it is still standing today (with the horizontal expansion all the way to Capitol). -
Baltimore Apartments At 916 Fannin St.
EspersonBuildings replied to Highrise Tower's topic in Historic Houston
916 Fannin? Must have been neighbors with The Rossonian. Interesting the number of apartment buildings that were downtown in the first half of the 20th century. This one, The Rossonian, The Beaconsfield, The Savoy, etc.- 1 reply

But did it actually exist? I wonder if it was ever constructed after this drawing (1897). Sacred Heart Church and school (Olle J. Lorehn) on Pierce between Fannin and San Jacinto, demolished not too long ago, was built in 1912. That is only 15 years later and just a few blocks away, and by the same architect. Could be it never materialized and was scraped.

Elevators
EspersonBuildings replied to TheNiche's topic in Architects, Developers, Builders, and Designs
Yea technology has really upgraded passenger elevators lately. I've seen some with features where I actually had to scratch my head thinking "ok, now what"? 😁 -
Sad. I remember when it first opened, I worked downtown. We dined there a couple of times but many, many more times at Primo's that was across the street.

Finnigan Building At 805 Main St.
EspersonBuildings replied to Highrise Tower's topic in Historic Houston
The Finnigan Building was located at the SOUTHEAST corner of Main and Rusk. The Gulf Building (now The JPMorgan Chase Bank Building, where Finn Hall is) is located at the NORTHWEST corner of Main and Rusk. -
Palace Hotel At The Houston Terminal

At first glance it looks like the Londale Hotel. -
Annunciation School At 1618 Texas Ave.

Thanks. I didn't realize it was only 9 years ago it was demolished. -
Annunciation School At 1618 Texas Ave.

Thank you, this is cool! I guess I could be wrong about remembering my mother saying the school was boys and girls. Unless during this 1907 map it was all boys and by my mother's time was boys and girls. I think the one marked "DORMITORY AND CLASS ROOMS" was the last to be demolished about 15 or 20 years ago. I believe some here posted that its replacement looks more like a Public Storage building. -
Annunciation School At 1618 Texas Ave.

My mother went to Incarnate Word Academy from 1950 to 1954. Annunciation Catholic School was located directly behind the church at Jackson and Texas, facing Jackson, I think. It was demolished in 1983, never rebuilt or relocated. I know there is a two story wood (or what looks like wood) structure at the site now but not sure if it's the William Foley Mansion. Annunciation was boys and girls up to 8th grade. From 9th to 12th grade the boys went to St. Thomas and the girls to Incarnate Word. -
The Houston Post Building At 2410 Polk St.
EspersonBuildings replied to Historiae Repetens's topic in Historic Houston
Was scratching my head here for a while. Just taking a stab here but I believe the photo from Highrise (fourth home March 28, 1955 at 2318 Polk) was replaced by 2400-2420 Polk in 1955 (Houston Post Building, 1955, Herbert Voelcker & Associates, according to Houston Architectural Guide Second Edition). Looking at the current CVS, 2410 Polk, you can see the resemblance to the 1955 structure. Question, I'm guessing the 1955 structure was the fifth home and lasted until 1970 when 4747 Southwest Freeway was built (now The Houston Chronicle) and became their sixth home. Can anyone confirm/enlighten me on this? -
Bellaire Theatre On Bellaire Blvd.

I remember the one at Stella Link (the photo that I believe is now Whole Foods). Not 100% sure but I think around the late 70's it might have been one of those $1.00 all seats, all times, just like the Garden Oaks during that time.
