  1. Bombero, I just looked at the Website for the Holland. It looks like if you ask them for a room, you have to tell them which room you want. I have never seen a hotel where every room had a different price. I
  2. The last reservation in a preplanned motel in is Carlsbad, and they have Internet access. So we will be able to make some plans from there. Big Ben and Fort Davis are set, so no communication is needed
  3. When I moved here three and a half years ago it rained that weekend. It didn
  4. I often wonder if there is a connection with Marfa Lights to Miller Lites? The Marfa art sounds interesting. Michelle is a painter, and is in the Bastrop Art Guild, so that's right up her alley. Thanks!
  5. My plan is to stay 3 nights near Big Bend, 2 nights in Fort Davis, and one night in Carlsbad. The trip getting there and coming back we will play by ear. We
  6. We are planning a trip to Big Bend, Fort Davis, Guadalupe and Carlsbad in the near future. Aside from the obvious, are there any hidden gems we should stop and see between, say, San Antonio and there? The last vacation we took was to Florida, and we simply made reservations a day or two in advance because we didn
  7. Red, it's obvious why Editor is in Chicago and you are in Houston - Chicago got first choice!
  8. There is the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History located in Rosanky just south of Bastrop on Hwy 304. It is supposed to be a nice one, but I am ashamed to admit I haven
  9. OK, who the hell is the clown who started this stupid post? What does this have to do with architecture, anyway? This person should be exiled from here, or at the least, tarred a feathered and run out of town on a rail! US
  10. I tried to avoid the Rice area like the plague
  11. There used to be a couple of trees right in the middle of Sunset Blvd just before it intersected with Main Street.
  12. The UofH at least let Tulsa score 6 points in a 100-6 win back in 1968. But then, that was a football game. Trivia: Who scored the last touchdown for the Cougars that day?
  13. mlink, I am going to the Austin Home Show tomorrow, and I don't see your company listed as an exhibitor.
  14. That's a new one on me. It's a good word, and very appropriate. I
  15. I made a number of enemies at another forum when the proposition was made for everyone to come together as one since the election was over. I politely declined. Isn
  16. In the post about the most hated people, the OP listed Wendy Portillo, the teacher who had students vote out Alex Barton from the class. I
  17. As far as I know, the Heights voted to remain dry when it was annexed by Houston, but has always had the option to become wet by a vote from those in the area. I don
  18. I checked B4-U-EAT.com for "Heights" and "breakfast" and both Triple A and Texas Cafeteria came up, both with mostly good reviews. Two other restaurants came up; one I knew about and the other one I had never heard about. I had been to Country Kitchen (W 11th between Ella and Hempstead) a few times years ago, and it was first rate. Also there is a place called Kojack's in the 1900 block of W 18th. Both are highly rated. Kojack's is only open M-F from 7am-8pm. Don't know if Country Kitchen is open weekends.
  19. I was going to suggest Texas Cafeteria on Shepherd. Actually, I never had breakfast there, but I enjoyed their lunches a number of times. How about Triple A next to the Market? Are they still open? Do they do breakfast? Of course, nothing beats a fresh hot dozen from a Shipley's for breakfast.
  20. On north side of Hwy 71 at 304 is Burleson Crossing, Bastrop
  21. I was out in the garage listening to their program one day, and they did a critique of a then popular rock and roll song. They were discussing and wondering just what a
  22. I took lessons from Jerry Roe, first at the American Legion on Golf, then at Bill Mraz on 34th. But I lost interest, and thus didn

  24. Although the streets are not labeled, you should be able to find White Oak on THIS MAP. If you compare this to a modern map, it is obvious I-45 replaced all of the road between downtown and where White Oak crosses Houston Avenue. I have fond memories of this drive as it was the route we usually took to town from the Heights. I also wondered where the road was exactly, and if any of it remained. It was not until I found this map that I got the answer. As a kid, my favorite part of the drive was going under the railroad trestle just south of Hogan/Crockett. I was always afraid a train would fall off as we passed underneath, but was disappointed if there was not a train passing overhead as we passed below.
