Okay, I might still prefer the previous design of the building, but the new tower looks great and makes up for the double helix change in my mind!

False hope about what? They wouldn’t be showing anything if they weren’t planning on building it. That’s the main focal point of the development.
But I thought it was fairly certain that they had done away with the helix building design and were only going to make a ground level park in the shape of a double helix.
If I'm wrong, then great, I would prefer the original design. But until someone can confirm that, I wish they would stop using old renderings.

Man, they keep teasing us with the old renderings of the double-helix shaped building. I know they are more readily available, but every time I see them it gives me false hope.

This was originally posted September 20, 2019 in the previous thread for 2301 University Blvd | Rice Village. It's being reposted since the original thread and other content from me were removed.
Davis Commercial might have found a tenant for 2301 University Blvd and that tenant might be The Rice Box restaurant .
The new Rice Village area location will probably be designed by Collaborative Projects.
If Rice Box is the tenant, they are going to make a killing in that area. Rice Village would be the perfect place to open another location.
I know their location on Shepherd has seen great traffic and success.

I still wish downtown would receive some sort of an indoor, ticketed attraction, or series of attractions, like our own Nickelodeon Universe (a-la the new one opening up in NY at the Meadowlands - https://www.americandream.com ), or at a smaller scale: a Legoland Discovery Center, Crayola Experience, and/or even a KidZania ( https://kidzania.com/en - the first of which in the States is of course going to the Dallas area, instead).
How neat would a conditioned, indoor park - something like Galaxy Station, but Gulf Coast Texas-themed - be? - https://berjayatimessquarethemeparkkl.com/galaxy-station/Proper attraction(s) aside… at minimum, I hope a City Target concept gets developed somewhere soon 'round there.
Agreed. My dream would be to have a new aquarium/amusement park complex built near Minute Maid/Discovery Green.
If the highway cap park ever happens in downtown, that would also be an excellent area to have it.

I don’t know if this is the section to post this, but the past week or so I’ve noticed that they have completely leveled the original NW Transit Center near where 610 and 10 meet.
I didn’t realize they were going to completely rebuild it. I for one am happy, the previous structure always looked dated with the white pyramid roof.

Can we either move this discussion to another forum or just cut it altogether @Moderators?

Not sure how much respect I'm actually due, but I find it hideous. Especially the truncated top. And it's made worse for me when I consider who Rice originally hired to design their opera house. We could have had something designed by the firm that designed these:
ETA: I must say I've yet to see the building in person. I'm hoping it's the rendering itself that makes it so offensive to me. But I still think Rice lost an opportunity by taking the conservative route. IMO, Houston is in dire need of some new signature architecture.
Beautiful buildings, but I think anything designed like that would be sorely out of place on the Rice campus. I feel as though the current design, while it has its issues, is consistent with the architecture seen around campus. Maybe if it were visualized you could change my mind, but then again I think taking the conservative approach won't upset the status quo.
Belmont University in Nashville is taking a similar approach with their new Performing Arts Center (in terms of trying to match the existing style of the campus):

The topping out occurred September 26, 2018.
But as the Instagram post confirms, they are raising the final beam on the 26th of this year.
I don't know if I've ever heard of a topping out celebration occurring exactly 1 year after the fact, seems either wrong or bizarre 🤔

Unknown, but police told me that the first call came in about 6:30 when workers were arriving to the site. The specific wording they used was the man "jumped or fell" after "crawling" on the crane. Sounded like it wasn't a worker to me, but neither police nor the Gilbane rep would confirm.
Really sad to hear. To me, my initial thoughts are it may have been one of the photographers you see on social media and instagram who scale buildings and cranes to get shots of the city.

Wow, I assumed this would be about 7-8 stories, but 20-25 stories is significant. Love that this area is growing so fast.
I wonder how long it will be before the gas station near by changes hands.

Wow, just blinked and now the facade looks like it's almost done on one side. Agreed, looking much better than I thought it would.

As long as it's taken to complete the plaza, I must say it looks pretty good.

I know it's always good to have infill, but like I said before it is somewhat of a relief that this development isn't going forward. Considering how much trouble they had getting this together, it's likely the final product would've turned out to be cheap and sub-par along with being a bad design.
It will be an issue going forward for any developer wishing to purchase that site, to either continue with something else or tear it all down.

I believe so, I know St. Louis, San Diego, and Washington D.C. have mixed-use developments surrounding their stadiums.
And I know Denver is in the process of completing theirs, as seen below:
^^^ Again, this is in Denver, CO.

No sooner had I posted about the fence coming down than I drove by again today to see a new, bigger fence around the property 🤣

Drove by the site today to notice the fence that was around the property has been removed.
I'm not sure if this is a bad sign moving forward, but it seems to indicate to me that works might not start anytime soon.

I guess this is a redesign... Grey brick can be cool... But I am not sure I like it at this corner. I was thinking the red brick would be a bit more appropriate.
I have to say a 6 story mid rise is a bit underwhelming next the the beautiful 40 story tower next door... the Parking in front on the Wesleyan side is also kinda lame... but hopefully that means there will be some GFR here... its got to, right?
I'll take this project for sure. And yes, it looks like 11,000 sqft of GFR.
I know it's not very tall or flashy in terms of color, but more residential in this area is a good thing. I live very close by and am within walking distance, I've walked past that site for almost 2 years now. More people are going to help the businesses in this area, and the GFR will bring even more options.
