  1. We built and lived in the Heights from 2003-2014. The number of kids increased greatly over those years. There are a lot of families there. We moved out of the Heights to have a larger yard and a smaller (but still good sized) one-story house. We have kids. They remain in private. We just couldn't afford the kind of house and lot we wanted in the Heights anymore. So, we left the property taxes behind. We moved to a more modest neighborhood to offset tuition. The Heights is a great place to live. I'm glad we were able to be a part of it.
  2. Did it pass inspection? Is it good work? Did they disclose it to you? Just my first questions.
  3. I remember it as GEMCO, a membership store for government employees, I think. Way before Sams.
  4. It would not top my list. My five rules for myself to keep us in check: -- No place names -- Looks good on a baptismal certificate -- Looks good and easy to pronounce on the top of a resume -- Didn't occur previously in close family -- Did not start with the same letters as any of the core family members
  5. I'm sorry to hear this. This stuff is nuts.
  6. Who is going to take this one? Looks sweet. http://www.har.com/mobile/touch/static/dispDetail.cfm?mlnum=67338016

  8. Parochial schools tend to be less expensive than other private school options. I would suggest doing tours of your private school options. Like someone said, spots open up in even hard-to-get-into schools. Good luck, and welcome to the neighborhood!
  9. Not gay, but congratulations on feeling more confident with yourself. I don't think you have to feel like you have to fit any stereotypes to be who you are. You're certainly not the only gay Republican I know, nor the only one from parents with very traditional values.
  10. I lived in Sharpstown from the halcyon days up until the early 00's. I still have family there and am not "afraid" to go there. My family lives in one of the neighborhoods, not the apartments. There is a mix of people, but I know a few families who are there for the private schools and who are there for the value. The negative reputation is over-blown with regards to the actual single-family neighborhoods. However, that does not mean that you should not be aware of your surroundings. My thought is to stay away from things surrounding the mall.
  11. Crash would match what we heard. Wonder what the details were to bring out such a response. The cars I get. The helicopters seem like a bigger deal.
  12. All over. Hope everyone is safe.
  13. Anyone know what is going on out there west of the Blvd. somewhere near 11th? I heard what my husband described as, "something ghetto" -- some sort of loud noise. Now, there are helicopters and sirens going all over. Anyone know what this is all about?
  14. Who do you recommend to install french drains and the like to take water to the street?
  15. Just heard the fire trucks on Yale and the chopper is over head. Where is it this time? I'm going to check out that current incidents page. Geez this is beyond ridiculous. EDIT: Looks like Allston and 13th according to the site. One more: someone just tweeted that it was a false alarm.
  16. Well, I'm sorry to have irked you <no sarcasm>. Those who know me know I would have given your mom and your 8 siblings my table even at 9 mos. full-throttle waddle. (I grew up one of five and my mom was a saint too. I'm a brat with only 1.5.) I also give up placement in lines for potty for pregnant women and people with toddlers. They just can't hold it and do deserve special consideration in my book. **We also tip extra, clean up when appropriate, and try our best to reign in our gremlin when eating out. He has to learn, but not at the expense of the poor waitstaff. Normally, he is pretty good but there are times. I liked my food. The sausage was very good.
  17. I know. I waited too long. But as many pointed out, they're new and I remembered Dragon Bowl being very behind. I was being patient and giving them time to work things out. That's the whole reason for waiting - being patient. I never imagined they lost my order. So part of this should serve as a warning - please do check in the 10, 15, or 20 minute time frame.
  18. I accepted waiting. I did not accept being forgotten and having my order lost. I was in line of sight for the cashier for whom things slowed down enough that she was looking at us and no longer taking orders. She could have noticed. I was there - you weren't. My expectations of giving an order and having it fulfilled were not out of line. Like I said - I waited 45 minutes before checking because they are new. If I had never checked, it would not have ever been filled. This is not slow kitchen. My condition and those in my party compounded the problem, sure. And, my son's version of a meltdown is probably any other parent's dream. If it were really bratty maybe someone would have noticed - he does not scream he just starts being contrary to any of my suggestions. This, however, was not the ROOT of the problem. That was their inability to keep track of an order. ANYONE (especially us) would have expected that the order was somewhere in the system - not completely lost and forgotten. And - what I expected - was a nod of acceptance about the mistake like refilling the milk. That is not too much to ask, imo.
  19. I am going to have to give them another chance another time. We went this morning and we were patient because the Dragon Bowl opening was so very chaotic. We imagined having similar issues, but it was sadly worse for us. We waited for 45 minutes. No one checked on us and we had the toddler so it really stinks to wait while hungry. I finally waddled my 9 mos. pregnant self up there to ask if the kitchen was really 45 minutes behind (receipt time-stamped). Turned out it was a good thing I checked, because somehow they lost our order. They took my receipt and never gave it back. Had to ask for my order again because the electronic system doesn't really note the specifics. It was not exactly right, but we did not return it. We needed to eat. They offered nothing, not even a refill of son's milk for the wait. They did get the order out in five minutes after being notified (much more like it for cooking some eggs). Toddler meltdown lasted the whole rest of the morning. Thanks guys. They will get another chance from me, but I was a little disappointed. You don't make 9 mos. pregnant women or families with toddlers wait for 45 minutes and just say oops. -- I'm not ready to pan them - looked like everyone else got quick service. If they're reading, however, I ask please pay attention. I am the one who left you a note about the above, because I know it can be fixed. The menu sounds fab.
  20. Well, I hope they caught the person. We were awake at 3:30 a.m. this morning because our son woke up. Shortly after that we heard the fire trucks driving up north of 11th on Tulane (or at least it sounded like Tulane from our house). The helicopters started at 6 a.m. - they sound like they're a little north of us. We're on Rutland.
  21. The video is up on the Chronicle now. This is really more Tulane than Ashland, I think. I too was awoken by the helicopters this morning.
  22. A couple of years ago a friend and I were discussing the coyote sightings, the squirrels with black coats, and she mentioned that there are feral chickens in the Heights too. She's on this board - so maybe she'll chime in with her source.
  23. La Michoacana for their wonderful tortillas. Laredo Taqueria for serving us breakfast almost every Saturday since our child was old enough to leave the house. Tansu for some of the best window shopping, and coolest gifts we've ever given. Penzey's for our well stocked spice drawer. Thai Spice for delivering to our home some decent food. Citgo on 11th and Yale for the simple repairs to our older car without "finding" a whole lot more to "fix." C&D whereas my father's hardware store was better, sadly it made an exit from the landscape over twenty years ago now. So, thank you for being a good hardware store and staying in business - if I had only the Depot it would really be sad. And, I try to buy more than just a screw or bolt there, since that doesn't keep good hardware stores around.
  24. The historical library downtown has a lot of information. It is in the old building (look for the one that is decidedly NOT modern). You'll go there, sit down, and ask for help. They'll bring you the records. They even have books containing census data for each residence from whenever. It is interesting to see who lived where you live when.
  25. 1. Loredo. My fav is Loredo Taqueria; we go there regularly. They have good huevos rancheros and bfast tacos. Coffee is only so-so, but it gets the job done. 2. El Rey. Damn good coffee -- if I could have Loredo's food and El Rey's coffee brought to the same table, I'd be happy. I was loyal only to El Rey for a long time, but I've switched bfast taco allegiance to Loredo. Still eat El Rey -- Loredo is just better in some small, but significant ways. 3. Yale Diner. They fit the hashbrown, bacon, eggs bill from time to time.
