  1. Houston was shortchanged in the Interstate Highway department. This is the first step ever to make up for it, and it only took 60 years. I hope they finish it. Next, I would love to see an Interstate connecting Houston and Austin. We would look much more impressive on a map with 4 interstates converging in Houston.
  2. No. Poeple are not expecting this to get of the ground, but people are. It's so ironic that the 'poeple' who advise others to let this project go are always the ones who get this thread started back up again. Just sayin'. Maybe you should go tell Contour Entertainment to stop doing their new market research study and to bring the new organization plan they are working on to a halt, because no matter what they do, it will never get off the ground. I'm sure they would truly value some more advice from anonymous theme park developers on the internet. I personally don't know if it will ever get off the ground, I hope it will. I think Contour having more control over the project is a positive direction. Don't agree? Sue me.
  3. "official" for this month, anyway. I don't think anyone expects that the EMCID is going to spend any more money on EarthQuest. They shouldn't have to at this point. Contour is in control of the project now. The last few articles from the Tribune have had some positive indications that Contour is very interested in getting EarthQuest built. Contour is willing to invest in a new study that will be used to find investors. They are also spending the time and the money putting a new business plan in place for the project. This is a big project for Contour, but at least they bring some actual successful theme park developing experience into the mix.
  4. The people getting sued can thank themselves. I think it's funny that with all the past talk about litigation, reports to the attorney general, possible investigations and all that other b.s. regarding the activities of the developers of EarthQuest, that those irresponsible bloggers get to go to court and explain their internet activities to a judge. I'm sure the judge will certainly understand that Frank McCrady forced soapmom to spend HOURS and HOURS a day stalking Don Holbrook on dozens of web forums for months on end. Bizarre? I'll say. But whatever, I'm just glad to hear that EarthQuest still has a chance to be built.
  5. Thank you Frank McCrady. http://www.ourtribun...le.php?id=13761 “The three biggest obstacles we’ve had so far are site control, option control and intellectual property,” said Brown while speaking to the board. “We’ve finally managed to handle all of these, so we’re excited to finally move forward.” The 1500-acre EarthQuest site was sold in bankruptcy court to Friendswood Development Company in May, with a provision that the original developer can buy back 500 acres, where the theme park is proposed to be located.
  6. ...but lots of underground. I hate wires. No exceptions! Money is no object. Bury those damned things already.
  7. Yes. Ugh. The project is dead. The article left no doubt to this conclusion. It is so dead that Contour Entertainment recently drafted a letter of intent with the East Montgomery County Improvement District in order to forge ahead with their plans for development. It is so dead that Contour Entertainment wants to spend money to update their market research study so it can be updated to reflect changes in the community. It is so dead that Chris Brown of Contour stated in the new article “We are moving forward and are excited the reality of things finally progressing. Once we gain site control, we will go from there.” It is so dead that the EMCID board members reviewed Contour's letter and contract at their June 14 meeting and approved the agreement to give Contour the design and artistic license for the park so they can move forward. It is so dead that the company taking control of financing said in the new article "In regards to financing for EarthQuest, they are in a better economic climate than they were a year ago which is also a favorable step for the project." Yes. I think the article made it quite clear that the project is completely dead with absolutely no chance however small that it could ever be built for all of eternity. I also think the article was clear when it said that Atlanta and Dallas get all these cool projects while Houston sits stagnant. You have to read between the lines just a little bit, but believe me the article was crystal clear. The title of the article "Developers for EarthQuest, Friendswood progress with plans" was misleading. Ugh.
  8. This is just another step. Any forward movement, however small is good news. So many people have given up hope for this project and have claimed that the project is dead or about to die, but this story is proof that there are still some people trying to get this park built.
  9. Happy news. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news%2Flocal&id=8636224
  10. Thanks for providing such great examples. They're perfect. I'm sure burger flippers everywhere are singing your praises.
  11. HAIF must be an agonizing place for someone who doesn't enjoy looking at renderings and lets face it, very few don't have at least a few unicorns grazing around. You should remember that before you even open a thread about a new project so that you don't get upset. The commercial real estate environment is where these renderings come from - or are at least responsible for the creation of a great many of them. This thread is about the new convention center hotel - someone posted a nice rendering. I enjoyed looking at it. I'm sure there is a thread at HAIF where there are no renderings of anything. But I doubt there are any that don't have something for you to complain about. But anyway, HAIF is NOT the commercial real estate environment. It is a forum where people discuss projects, master plans, and visions - among other things. I see nothing wrong with posting renderings and for people to make comments (good or bad) on them or just enjoy looking at them if they want to. You don't have to like them if you don't want to. In fact, I think there is a button somewhere around here that might even make sure renderings or photos never even show up on your browser to bother you at all.
  12. I like the rendering because it gives a hint as to what the area could look like one day. Plus it's fun to look at. Also like that it represents a long term vision of the area. It may not be perfectly realistic in every sense of the word, but there is nothing wrong with illustrating a vision. If anyone want to take it as a contract, that's their problem. Personally, I hope the area looks better than that rendering one day. I hope the new convention hotel across from the park is much taller than the one in the rendering. The Houston skyline could use a little more height in that area. That is an opinion - not a contract.
  13. I think it is highly admirable of you to use your clout as an "upper middle class" citizen to defend people who choose to sit in the back of the room. To answer your question, - a little of both. Some people grow out of being a D-student and some just defend them on the internet.
  14. I have never seen one thing written by the EarthQuest Institute that said it was anything other than a Not-for-profit. "Charities and not-for-profit organisations are not the same things." http://www.hmrc.gov....s/vat/intro.htm Even still, charities also employ people for their services. Holbrook committed no crime by accepting a job from EQI.
  15. Thanks for the comic relief LTAWACS, ultimately we are discussing a theme park, not a chemical plant and this thread could use a little levity to sway it back towards the spirit of which all theme parks aspire to be - just a fun place to hang out for a while.
  16. I'm sorry if my comment offended you. I love burgers and I had many friends who sat in the back of the class who went on to better things. But, they didn't get to those better things by settling for less. I'm sure your post gives hope to many others who go to classes to goof off. Yes, they will always be able to tell everyone what a successful astronaut or cowboy they became on the anonymous internet.
  17. I love professionalism. But what is the point of even having a convention center if it can't attract conventions. As someone who loves Houston, you won't hear me complaining (too much) about our corporate look. I'm not suggesting that we turn Houston into Las Vegas, but in the case of attracting business conventions, and out-of-towners, I don't think a little bling, some first-rate amenities or a convenient place to shop would hurt a convention center 'district'. Discovery Green is a great asset already in place to really make this area special. I hope city leaders run with it and utilize it to make this area of downtown as appealing as possible. I'm not talking about affixing a strip of blinking multi-colored LED lights along the barrel of one's rifle. I'm talking about affixing a strip of blinking lights (or hopefully something much more tasteful) to give a convention center district the best chance it can get to compete with other cities who don't seem to have any problem justifying going the extra mile when it comes to giving visitors something to remember when visiting their city.
