  1. Actually, Worldlyman, I think I may have to take back what I said about SF's skyline. Now that Rincon Tower is almost complete the SF skyline has become a lot more interesting IMO. Rincon Tower is about 60 floors and is built away from the other tall buildings. It has that Williams Tower effect going on as you come into SF from the Bay Bridge. There are no buildings nearby anywhere close to its height (for the time being) and it stands all alone, commanding a lot of attention. They built this tower really fast, back in April when I made that comment, the tower just barely stood out, nothing special, but over the summer when those upper floors went up, people really started noticing it. I don't think anyone noticed this building until it got up around 40 floors. Those last 20 made a HUGE difference in that location. The tower is practically built right on the freeway lanes of the entry to the Bay Bridge. I've never seen a skyscraper built so close to a freeway. They interviewed a bunch of local SF people on the news for opinions of this building. Many liked it, but there were several weirdos who were complaining about how they think Rincon has ruined the SF skyline for the exact reason that I think it has become much better. Some people were complaining that it just doesn't fit, and although I see why they would say that, I think it has made the skyline much more dynamic and dramatic. There are many tall buildings under construction in SF these days, the number of cranes in South of Market area are putting Downtown Houston and uptown Dallas to shame. And some of the ones planned could drastically alter SF's skyline for the better. I first got obsessed with tall buildings as a little kid when I saw "The Towering Inferno" and in the movie there is that awsome shot of the ficticious 135 floor building in SF with all the lights on viewed from across the bay, on the Oakland side. Rincoln tower has that same majestic effect when viewed from the east bay and from the bridge as you come in. The top floors of Rincon are tapered a bit, which really reminds me of the "Glass Tower". It gives me chills every time I see it as I come in to the city from the Bay Bridge. Rincon is the tall tower on the left side of the photo. This photo must have been taken 6 months ago. The exterior looks nearly finished today. The really tall one in the middle of the photo doesn't exist at the moment. It is just a rendering of a new proposed building that has been photoshopped on to a real photo of SF. If they build that one it will reallly change the skyline. I wish I could find a photo of SF from the east bay to illustrate my point, but I guess this will have to do for now.
  2. What great photos! Thanx for sharing. I'm getting all goose pimply. This thing isn't even near done yet and it already has a dynamic vibe.
  3. I never realized that saying Discovery Green and Central Park in the same sentence was such taboo, but o.k. That rendering in the Chron showing a patch of green surrounded by skyscrapers just made me think of it. It's not like I said something insane like Houston was getting the next Times Square or something. I'll drop it, but I don't think I'll be the only one (especially when it's finished) to think of Central Park when they see photos or take a stroll thru DG.
  4. ...And I think YOU should apply for a room at a rest home for frustrated Houston haters. You must be having a serious nervous breakdown these days with all the positive things going on in Houston. This is about the booming DG area and Embassy Suites, not me. Please stay on topic, grumpy.
  5. Well, when I say miniature, I mean about 8 blocks worth of Central Park. Maybe I should have said "microscopic Central Park". But who cares, DG is already a total hit and it's nothing more than a 12 acre pile of dirt at the moment. Just wait until Discovery Green becomes 'green' and full of life and people - it'll be rockin'. I love what's going on in east downtown, just wish I could add about 10 floors to all the towers going up over there tho. But I'm not complaining....just rambling.
  6. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...iz/5156092.html Who was the genius who came up with the idea of building a nice park like Discovery Green in the middle of downtown? There should be a statue erected of him/her. This park is attracting development like bees are attracted to pollen. In 10 years or less DG is going to be like a miniature Central Park right in our own back yard!
  7. Yes! Yes! Yes! I wonder if the 55 story tower will look like the one in the latest renderings posted of BLVD Place (the ones posted last June). I rememeber counting the floors in one of those renderings of the tallest tower (the one in the middle of the project) and it was 50+ floors, but with no hard data or details released with the renderings, I was afraid it was just wishful thinking that BLVD Place was REALLY going to have a 50+ story tower. I'm so buzzed to find out that the rendering of the towers (or at least the height) was no joke. I hope the towers look like the renderings with those cool angled footprints and glass facades. I love it that we will have 2 towers going up in Houston over 45 floors, and several (already lost count) going up over 30!
  8. I do listen to my elders when it appears that they have something of value to contribute to a conversation. That's not you my friend. Never has been, never will be. You're more like my grumpy grandpa sitting in his chair who only opens his mouth to complain. We all stopped listening years ago, but he continues to rattle on. Sometimes I think he (and you) only act this way because it's the only way you guys can get anyone to talk to you. Sad. I mean, I can sort of see why someone who might be frustrated with the way the TEXANS played a losing game might feel a need to come here and vent. I can even understand a few folks are still raw about not having VY or RB on our team when we could have. The TEXANS are certainly far from a perfect organization at the moment. But, the home team looked very good in their first game, they looked good in the preseason, and the have the longest winning streak in the team's short history, and all you can do is show up to spread your usual, expected, and completely pointless venom. You are the last person anyone needs to listen to. You contribute NOTHING but negitive vibes. And what's the point? Do you think you are going to talk someone in to not supporting the home team? Even if you could why would you want to? You make NO sense to me, grandpa, I mean 214. You may well have some legitimate opportunities to bash the home team later this year, but not this week. Dreaming up negitive things to say after a great victory is kind of crazy. The least you could do is wait until there is a reason to btch. I think you're just another cowboob fan that's jealous of our (TEXANS supporters) positive energy. Obviously, you are unhappy with the TEXANS' success. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure your modivations. Who else wants to crap on TEXANS fans? Patriot fans? No. Most other NFL team supporters are more secure about their home teams and have better things to do than to come here and complain about the winning streak of the youngest team in the NFL and a few home town fans showing their happiness and support of the home team. Wow, imagine people supporting the home team. I guess that's a concept beyond your imagination. And since most cowchip fans have little to no imagination, I thought it was safe to assume (especially with as many pro D and anti H posts you've made here) that somehow it all came down to the in-state rivalry AGAIN. 214, you do nothing at this website but bash everything Houston and praise everything Dallas for some reason, like you think you're actually going to stop people from enjoying living in this town. Just because you're miserable, I guess you want everyone else to be, but it doesn't work that way. Fly away. Get yourself some help and support the home team like a normal person for a change. GO TEXANS!
  9. Yeah, the cowcraps are 47 years old so I guess the playing field is just a little lop-sided if you want to compare the past accomplishments of the two teams. You might as well compare the accomplishments of my 47 year old uncle to my 6 year old nephew. My uncle has done so much more with his life and we are all really impressed that he has won more awards in the last half century than my 6 y.o. nephew. So what if Junior wasn't even born during the last time my uncle won his last trophy (I think it was over 10 years ago - It was so long ago, mostly everone except his immediate family and people who live in the past have forgotten about it). My little nephew is really showing some promise these days but he still can't beat the crap out of old uncle like the TEXANS did to the cowfarts in 2007. Get unstuck from the past. & GO TEXANS!
  10. As double usual, not only dissatisfied, but finding something wrong with a 17 point victory and a 3 game winning streak as if that is a bad thing. That's the problem with some people at this website... they only show up to btch. Even if they have nothing to back it up with. Personally, 3 game winning streaks are the kind of mediocrity that I can live with from the home team if I have to. I mean, it could be better, but it's not quite as humiliating as fumbling a field goal snap for what would have been a playoff victory or losing the governer's cup. GO TEXANS! 214, do you ever come here without a can full of gas and a match? I think you are just jealous because the 214 team only has a one game winning streak. You should embrace your 713 side for awhile and give that negitive/loser attitude a rest... ...if that's possible.
  11. Misty water colored memories. I guess the Cowpies fans will be living in the past this week. They may have a dismal week and season ahead of them but there's always some old scratchy NFL movies they can watch from 30 years ago. BTW, that's real fair. Compare a 47 year old team and their record against a 5 year old team why don't you. I'll be impressed with that photo once the Texans have been around awhile, in say, about 42 more years. If the Texans don't have 5 superbowl trophies by then... you win. However none of the crap in that photo helped out the cowpukes last night. It's too bad for the cow-holes that old trophies don't put points on the scoreboard. In fact, if anything looking at old tarnished trophies makes losing even more painful. I mean, just look how far they have fallen from those old old old glory days. Just look how low they have sunk. Tisk, tisk. Yes, I'm milkin' it. As a Texans supporter, one has to make the most of weeks like this. So expect lots more. Gotta make the most of it while I can. >
  12. Discovery Tower is more interesting than I thought it was going to be. I was all prepared for a standard box design, but at least there is something funky going on at the roof to give this building its own presence. Still, I would love to see another 10 floors added to the height.
  13. Nice. They must have decided to make the terrace face east so that it would face Minute Maid Park. I think it is a good choice. I would have thought that any unique attribute on any tower in Houston would automatically face west since that seems to be the "front" of the dt skyline, especially on this building where the west side of the building also faces Main and the rail. But it's nice to see that the planners were thinking outside the box on this one. Plus, this tower and it's unique terrace on the east side will make a significant impact to the skyline when seen on television during Astros games.
  14. That idea has my vote. I was thinking the same thing. North of Discovery Green would be a perfect location. I don't think you could get more central to all the destinations in downtown than that. Plus a nice tower would look awesome in the reflective pool going in the north side of the park. On a side note, why aren't these people afraid of what the Astrodome Hotel might do as far as competition? It sounds like they want to build a hotel to accomodate for the conventions downtown, but isn't this the same market the Astrodome project is going for?
  15. Here's some more. Yes. I'm just THAT bored. I doodle skyscrapers when there's nothing on TV. Besides, if I keep guessing maybe someone will post the real rendering just to shut me up. Basically this is the same thing I posted before only made simpler by making it a 6 sided outer walled structure vs. an 8 sided outer walled structure. Forgive my ignorance of proper architecture lingo. I crank out thumbs for a living and speak graphic design lingo, but I don't normally draw buildings except for fun. Please don't take all these off-the-clock thumbnail doodles as my idea of great architecture or what I necessarily want to see in downtown Houston. I'm trying to stay within the parameters of what has been revealed so far about Hines 47 with the hopes that people who have seen it will give me more info so that I can make the necessary revisions - or better yet someone post the real renderings. ...So, we know that looking down at it, it's longer on one axis than another and has horizontally angled walls similar to the Pan Am building. All glass. No strong horizontal or vertical lines. Flat roof. Interlocking volumes (whatever that is) and a ~5 story terrace 2/3rds up. BTW, Great Hizzy, it looks like the AIM building was to have slightly vertically angled or tapered sides near the top of the tower. I have heard no mention of that being applied on Hines 47 before on this website, but I think it would be awesome if it used a similar effect.
  16. Thanx. I hope the real tower looks better than that too. And that someone who's seen the actual rendering can use my guesstimation renderings to give us a better idea of the real deal. The whole terrace thing 2/3rds the way up has me a bit baffled. As does the "interlocking volumes". I based the overall look on the Pan Am building, but who knows. Anyone have an idea WHEN the actual renderings will come out?
  17. I sure wish the people who have seen the rendering had some basic drawing skills. Drawing rectangles isn't too hard. Just think how cool it would be to reveal the first rendering of this tower to the public (HAIFers), even if it's only a simple home made doodle. You would be a hero around here. Besides, it would give the person who did this an undisputed reputation of being one of the most reliable sources at this website. An instant STAR! People are getting so anxious to see a rendering of this tower that they are starting to crack. I'm so cracked I've desided to post my own rendering based on all the descriptions I've heard. Sort of like a police sketching of a crimal suspect. Someone who has seen the real rendering please let me know if I came close:
  18. It's modern, it's urban, comes up to the street, sidewalk cafes - I like it a lot. Give me more of these in Midtown.
  19. Thanks for posting that photo. I was expecting something much much worse from all the negitive comments. I think you guys prepared me for something so incredibly bad that this garage just couldn't live down to it. Don't get me wrong, it's not pretty, but I can handle this. This sinks into the background at least. It could have been much worse, it could have been ugly AND stood out from a distance. It's so boring, I'm very surprised it's getting this much attention. Must be because of the hype.
  20. Good luck. People who know anything about what's going on behind the scenes in Houston don't give it up that easily. I guess you're new, you'll learn. But those who don't know anything about what's coming up next (like me) will give you plenty of emotional reaction. It would be great if we could pick out only the people we wanted responses from, but it's best to not expect more facts than opinions around here. That's o.k. for me - Sometimes I like the opinions better than the facts anyway.
  21. In that Houstonist article about the new 47 floor Hines building, it mentions (at the bottom) that the proposed Discovery tower project being developed by Trammel Crow is going to be 850,000 sq ft. In the old chronicle article it said that Discovery tower was going to have 630,000 sq ft. and be 31 floors. Does anyone think that Discovery Tower might have more floors now that more sq ft is being added on (assuming the Houstonist is correct). If Hines 47 (cute nickname) is to be 900,000 sq ft and Discovery Tower is to be 850,000 sq ft - wouldn't that bring Discovery up to at least 40 floors now?
