I received an email today from HSO indicating the Jones Hall downstairs restrooms will be under construction for the remainder of the season.  "Luxury loos" are being installed on the Capitol Street sidewalk and will only be accessible from within Jones Hall.  I'm guessing a pair of the glass doors in front will somehow be dedicated to access the loos!

Edit: curiosity killed the cat!  I drove by to check it out, and yes it looks like two sets of glass doors in front are cordoned off for bathroom access outside.  The entire side on Capitol is cordoned off.

Can confirm, went to the symphony last night and was surprised to be escorted outside at intermission to use the bathroom. They were not luxury.

Unfortunately, at least in my part of town, the December 2022 hard freeze was just as cold as the February 2021 hard freeze (16.7 degrees F).  All my vines were killed above ground in 2021, and what had grown back (not even 10% in some places -- it takes many years to fully cover a building) was killed again last month.  I can understand their frustration, if this kind of extreme weather is the new normal meaning vines are no longer practical in our climate, but I'll admit the artificial turf looks terrible.

yep just tore mine down to the last 2 feet or so this afternoon. Here's to 2023...

Common bond opened a "light" concept with a limited menu and it just didn't work. In my opinion, if they had done a brasserie like downtown it would have thrived. Just look at the sushi restaurant on the Drew and Fannin corner. It has a regular crowd and is pretty busy on the weekends.

The space has already been leased to an Acai bowl concept or chain. They started the remodel before Thanksgiving and it appears to be moving quickly.

Yeah, and the hours were silly. It wasn't open M-W.

This opinion piece has exactly the lack of context the Stop I45 group has in all of their statements- not surprised considering the author lives in New York. There's really no independent, critical thought at all in the opposition to this project.

I'm extremely excited for the significantly improved access downtown will have to Fourth Ward, Midtown, and EaDo and the significantly improved low income housing that will be created because of this project.

Oh I have literally no thoughts on the article itself opinionwise, just sharing since it was an NYT feature with a kinda nifty interactive aspect

  5. Sounds like a stadium update is on the horizon.

“How do we take this grand old structure that’s so meaningful to so many people and try to modernize it in a way that’s effective for our current students, student-athletes and fans? That’s the challenge,” Karlgaard said. “We’re in a really good place with that. I think in the next month or so we’ll be able to show people what it is that we plan to do. And for those that have seen the concepts around the stadium modernization plan, they’re really, really excited about it.”

In my opinion, the yellow turd building has suffered a lot of what I really hate about EIFS stucco. It's just not long-term durable. It seems prone to moisture issues and staining. It looks great for about 5-8 years, and then after that it just looks cheap and tired.

Also, bold colored paint and stucco will bleach in the Texas sun. Unless you're planning on repainting every five years, neutral colors will go farther before it starts looking dingy.

I'm happy to see new paint on the place. I hope they're using a good sealer undercoat on that, otherwise that moisture staining will just bleed through.

Not to bring this building back up, but they're now painting the roof tiles dark green.
