  1. Maybe they'll build a big Greyhound bus station and redirect traffic from the downtown station to the Heights area. That way we can have recently released criminals rather than those rascally people who want to work.
  2. I also liked the distant horn while reading on my front porch at night. BUT I also lived on Mid Lane when I 1st moved to Houston in apartments that had nothing between them and the train tracks except a parking lot. It was terrible. I couldn't even stay there and ended up sleeping at my [now] husband's every night, which defeated the purpose of living close to work. So while I will miss the Washington whistles, they were not in my back yard so good for the people who live there.
  3. i'm more concerned about the trail under i10 to target...
  4. Many neighborhoods with historic designations have been lobbying for this. It was not something that was provided for in the past at all, i.e. not an option thru CoH. again, this is all just what i've heard from a couple people so take it as total hearsay and not as absolute. this is why there would be an opt out provision, so if residents don't want it, they can keep their "historic" designation rather than be protected. i think the majority of people in historic districts (like the 1st ward) will be happy to take it though.
  5. I don't know anything about the moratorium but i have been hearing a lot of rumors about this for the last few months. the last i heard was that historic districts would be made in to protected districts, thus giving them the No Means No authority and getting rid of the 90 day wait. what i also heard, and i have no idea how true this is, is that districts will be able to vote to opt out if they do not want to be protected. personally, i think this is great and hope it really does happen.
  6. Yeah, that's what I always hear too. Heights = northwest. So everytime there is a shooting out near Champions, I'll get some friend from the 'burbs emailing to ask if it was near me. le sigh.
  7. Actually, that's not true. Maybe Walmart & Target, but retailers the size of TM will get one shipment per week, maybe 2. Even high volume stores like Pottery Barn (the Highland Village store is in the top 5 in the country) only get trucks once a week.
  8. yeah, on my blog's FB page someone said they got Vera Wang china there once. I get the impression TM is like overstock.com from back before there was an overstock.com
  9. sorry. no need to get defensive. that's not what i meant. it's actually not changing to a private school from a public one. it's actually becoming a daycare, not technically a real "school" anymore.
  10. i honestly don't see Berings and C&D in the same category. Maybe Berings used to have actual hardware, but these days it's high end stationery, china patterns and even spendy kids' clothes. it's more like Events than C&D. so, yeah, i can see Bering's but then again, it gives cred to all those who wish the Heights was more like West U.
  11. it's not a private school, per se. it's a daycare. my son goes there. they stop at pre-K4 for the school year, altho they do have programs for older kids in the summer.
  12. esperanza owns several properties on the blvd, including their main house next to Pappas which is on the historic register. all of these houses will be on the market as soon as their move to the roy street location is complete. their plan is to have the whole school moved by early fall, except their "discovery center" which is a commercial building on the south side. i am curious to see what happens to the buildings, esp the main house. the house has been carved up to meet the needs of a daycare but it also has a lot of the original details like the fireplaces, doors and many of the original windows.
  13. it was EXCELLENT. it's so cute inside. very small. i bet capacity is less than 50 people. open kitchen, jamie zelko was working the line. great and affordable wine list with a little bit of everything. our server was very knowledgeable about the wines. impressive for the 1st day. i am going to post this to the blog, but i had short ribs. they were excellent but the cheddar polenta under them was the big winner on my plate. husband had meatloaf over yukon gold mashed potatoes. as comfortable as you imagine with a nice kick from the meatloaf. other friend had a sandwich- names escapes me now- but it had 2 or 3 cheeses + proscuitto and bacon. when he bit in, he actually laughed at how good it was. his came with nice, thin crisp fries. food took a while to come out and was more like room temp when we got it but that is easily forgivable on day 1, esp when the taste made up for it. they looked fully staffed and, again, everyone seemed more than competent. i think this is going to be a real winner for the 'hood.
  14. that's great. we took lessons at SSQQ before our wedding- country western swing, to be exact. it was a blast. we may even take more with something so close.
  15. mama mafia! ha! that made me laugh proud member- foodie division. heights kids group currently has over 750 members, each representing a family of at least 3. while i can understand some people don't always enjoy being around kids, suggesting a casual restaurant have no highchairs is like suggesting they put out a sign that says "we're going to turn away 2500 people at random. have a nice day"
  16. agreed. and as far as no one else leaving comments, i think everyone already said their peace...
  17. we were there for lunch as well. we ate in and had to wait for a table but they quickly accommodated us. some new looking staff seemed confused but did it with a smile and that is all you can ask for sometimes. they were out of fried green beans, but i once again got that buffalo chicken wrap and it was every bit as good as the last time. glad to see business so good.
  18. i hate rumors like this. i heard it was going to be the new starbuck's HQ with a starbucks on each floor. now i don't know who to believe!
  19. that would be great, indeed! i feel like the problem with that place has never been the location. it's always been the interior. we never even went to its last incarnation but that wine bar that was there sucked. you know if a wine bar fails when it's the only one in the whole neighborhood (BoomBoom Room wasn't open yet, nor Antidote which is like a substitute wine bar), it has to be bad.
  20. oh yeah! we get chatter's delivery 2x a month easy. their hummus is the best!
  21. Berryhill: when the weather is nice- or even veering toward hot- we eat there every Friday night Lola: every weekend involves at least one meal at Lola, typically lunch after a bike ride Pie In The Sky: it's new but based on atmosphere and pricing, we'll be there often Empire Seafood: we don't go but get delivery from them a couple times a month Dry Creek: again, nice weather means many trips to DC. it's ok for the service to be horrible when the weather is patio perfect. Antidote: it's not a restaurant but we "eat" breakfast there often and stop by for a drink to go several times a week. it's also late morning snack place when we head out for a day on the bikes. Chilosos: we would eat here a lot more if my husband had his way. breakfast tacos ONLY These places I wouldn't say we eat at 12x a year but we go regularly, probably 7-9x annually. Glasswall: this is our go-to for a nice date night or a quick meal at the bar before a show Stella Sola: where we want to take all our friends at least once, plus they've added brunch! Shade: nice family meals. out of town guests. I really don't consider the Washington strip restaurants part of the Heights. We've had this discussion on this forum but I consider an interstate highway a pretty clear line of demarkation and that area now even has it's own nickname: the corridor. so i do frequent some places down there (El Rey, Max's Wine Dive, Zoe's Kitchen- and Les Girvals once it opens) but I really in good conscience can't add them to my Heights list
  22. i am literally DROOLING thinking of how i can put some chicken, frank's red hot an blue cheese together to create this dish. yummy, yummy, yummy! i love franks. LOVE IT.
  23. done. and i added the "delivery y or n" question on the end
  24. of course you should. we'll be your best friends. plus, your mom would want you to tell us.
