  1. If you move from SoHo to Katy, you'll be miserable. Freaking miserable. We live in the Heights. There are plenty of peripheral neighborhoods around here that are up and coming. We would have loved a nice mid-century ranch as well, but have a bunglow. Traditional on the outside; mod on the inside. That's what we had to do. What I always recommend to anyone and everyone moving to Houston: Get an apt, sign a 6 month lease and get to know the city. There is no way to really, truly get the kind of info you need to make an informed decision about where to live from message boards. The concept of "suburbs" in H-town is very different than it is in the northeast. I just don't think you can make a decision and an investment without really being here and seeing/learning the character of the different neighborhoods first hand.
  2. Thanks! I have a friend who hordes design mags, so I'll check with her... Since we're on the subject- besides MetHome and Dwell, are there any other mags out there that deal specifically with modern furniture that you guys like?
  3. Thanks for the photo! We were just at DWR yesterday. I didn't even think to check their website... Hubby got to sit in one and everything. Still not sold. I mean, what is his problem? Did I really marry a man who doesn't like the Ghost?
  4. A few months ago I saw a picture of a large, dark table (wood) with Starck's clear Ghost Chairs. Now I can't find it anywhere and it's the ONLY pic that is going to prove to my wonderful and very picky husband that these chairs are perfect for our house. It may have been in Architectural Digest, but I can't be sure. Just wondering if anyone has seen this pic or something similar... Thanks!
  5. It's a great little spot. A couple of us mentioned it in the Thai Spice thread as well!
  6. We've been to Bamboo House as well. I definitely recommend it!
  7. There is another little place opening up at 11th and Shepherd called Dragon Bowl. Looks like Chinese fast food, which may seem cheesy at 1st but is something Houston lacks that most people in other cities live on. I think that's the perfect location for those kinds of restaurants. I don't care what anyone says- I'd be devistated in Popeye's ever left the Heights! :-)
  8. I agree about the prepared foods. While the selection of oils and vinegars is great, I only need to buy those items every so often. I would love to see them do some cold, prepared salads- the kind of things I want to grab on the way home from work... Too many people go to a restaurant when it 1st opens, get angry and never go back. Nice to know there are some people out there who understand the growing pains of a new place
  9. McCain's Market has a small coffee bar. They also have a small selection of pastries. Like anywhere, I'm sure if they do well they will expand their offerings!
  10. Thai Spice is open. Went to Colina's Friday night and Thai Spice was packed. Also, have any of you been to McCains Market yet? FYI- their Buddy's Organic Chicken is actually cheaper then Kroger!
  11. This is so exciting! I think HAIF posters should be invited to the soft opening. Afterall, we are already spreading the word!! Shepard, Glad you found our little link!!
  12. Really? It would make me want to gouge my eardrums with a Bic. I can't believe he is 40-something...
  13. I have some good friends that live on West 26th. They bought their house 2 years ago (new build) and the street was scary! It's barely recognizable at this point (in a good way) and the houses around them are selling for about 30% more than what they paid. Sound investment, wouldn't you say? As the area builds up, the schools will improve. If you got pregnant this January, it would still be 6 years before you child was ready for school. At that point, I wouldn't be suprised if they've built a new school up there to match the growth!
  14. oh- well that would explain it. I'd hate for you to have to go through any trouble with the scan. I only read the Chron on line, but maye someone at my office has the print copy. It will be really great to see it!
  15. Wow- thanks! I had no idea Allegro was doing commercial as well. As much as I don't really like what they're doing residentially, I bet they'll bring a different look to the commercial buildings that are popping up all across the Heights. Who needs one more pink, brick strip center?
  16. The wine list is amazing. They stole the sommalier from Mockingbird Bistro and have a focus on smaller wineries, more esoteric wines at great prices. My wine snob of a husband even applauds the list. They don't do bad with a martini either
  17. Geesh. This is too bad. I was there a couple of times when they first opened (which was about 4 or 5 months ago). The service was a little slow due to being understaffed, but the servers were nice and accomodating. It's a shame that it's gotten worse rather than better. I have to wonder if they weren't busy enough to keep good servers there (read- not enough money) and have had to settle for what they have now. I like going to Onion Creek, but have never found them to be the beer-and-a-smile types there either. I just don't worry about it since it's counter service.
  18. My hubby and I read an article several months ago that talked about a new, chef owned restaurant (possibly being called Glass Wall) being built at 10 1/2 and Studewood. Well, a couple months later, we saw a slab being poured and got very excited to have another pedestrian-friendly option from our home... Then, after several weeks of construction, walls started to go up and with them an Allegro homebuilders sign! Would they really be putting townhomes (doesn't look like a single family) right there? Does anyone know anything about the restaurant or the construction? I'm all for any kind of development along that strip. Just wondering what the deal is... Also, while I was trying to find my own answer, I came across this local restaurant message board. Everyone here seems to like food, so I thought I would post it Houston Restaurant Reviews
  19. No kidding! 8 pm is big time for our lovely neck of the woods! I think I'll swing by after work today. Maybe if they get enough business (and feedback) they'll add some Sunday hours. Lots of places on 19th are now open 7 days!
  20. Well, the building looks great but I hardly think we need another real estate office... Too bad...
  21. Hubby and I went by on a little stroll today. Rock of Ages sells... wait for it.... wait for it... heastones. Yup. As far as McCain's, it's looking very cute inside. There was a slogan... something like "Buy Fresh... Go Local." Sounds appealing to me... The market takes about 1/2 the building. There is still a spot for lease between the market and the headstone shop.
  22. I agree about the hours thing. My hubby and I like to get an ice cream after dinner. Heck- we don't even get home from work until after 6... Again, I totally agree. Of course, now that it's opening, all of us talking about it need to be committed to going there, even if the sopresatta is $.50/lb more than CM.
