  1. i haven't heard about it via Heights Kids Group yet,so I am betting that the word hasn't spread yet. I am also all for more density but this is the wrong location and the wrong type of project. i think that white oak will turn almost completely commercial eventually, which is great. this project looks all about ego to me. when will these builders realize what they are getting in to when they buy in the heights. they think it's a giant free for all up here and they are wrong (on the commerical side anyway).
  2. yeah, i did but never felt the need to keep it cluttering up my inbox i was actually there today buying cheap champagne for playgroup and asked an employee. they said work will start in september
  3. no links available. this is just knowledge coming from living in the neighborhood and shopping at the store. when i 1st heard this, i contacted kroger corporate and was informed that the rumors were true. in fact, it was the corp office that told me it would be the largest in the southwest with a huge organic section. you can already see the organic products coming in. they are now both in the "heathfood" section and on the "regualr" store shelves. exactly. china buffet ain't doin' much bid-ness. Well, soon it will be a nice Kroger. Of course, i have a list of 1oo million other things i'd rather see cops doing in the heights. that being said, kroger (and randalls) are never going to be rice or central market or whole foods. it's a different market and different market experience altogether. it's apples to oranges. i personally will not shop at rice b/c the family that owns it is a bunch of jerks. if you are fortunate enough to be able to shop at non-rush hour times like i am, there will be a giant new HEB opening on i10 near costco soon. rarely do i buy meat from kroger. it is more for canned goods and frozen foods for me, but i did have some of their organic chicken last night. it was pretty good and we all feel fine as of today.
  4. Hey there, Vergs. Welcome to the HAIF. Just so you know, the Kroger on 11th is about to undergo a HUGE renovation. It will not only be bigger and newer than the one on W Gray, it will be bigger than the one on Buffalo Speedway down in your old 'hood. It will actually be the largest Kroger in the Southwest. You generally don't sound happy with your move. What brought you to the north side?
  5. right. it's not the architecture of a strip center in and of itself. it's the kinds of tenants that are going in. i was even ok with the big box stores- i think we did need a target (better than a walmart) and i think staples will be handy. it's the panda express and chili's and 15 banks and matress stores and payless. ew. ew. ew. there has been optimistic chatter that these will turn in time. fingers crossed.
  6. We can't go get a cheap meal in their cafeteria either. These facilities are to improve the school for the kids that go there. With every well intentioned tax payer from the 'hood, there is a not-well intentioned vandal with spray paint, vagrant with an empty 40 oz and irresponsible pet owner with a crapping Great Dane. Then additional tax dollars go to fix all this stuff so the school can stay nice for the kids that go there. EDIT: Additionally, my husband just pointed out that what we definitely do not want is adults who don't belong around a high school having open access to a high school. He said "If someone doesn't work at a school or have a kid at a school, they don't need to be on the grounds of a school."
  7. it begs the eternal question: who the heck is buying all these mattresses? now, be thoughtful with your responses, people. one time on this forum someone suggested that we have so many mattress stores b/c "illegals" don't bring mattresses with them. that is ridiculous just b/c it is, but also, i hardly doubt a bunch of recent immigrants are buying up Temperpedics.
  8. wow! what an ___ it says in the listing that development "will" start in 2008. how do we go about checking on these things (besides posting here, that is)?
  9. Does anyone know anything else about this development? (I didn't want to hijack the thread below so I started a new one) This is from a listing on HAR.com http://search.har.com/engine/disphrpic.cfm...Houston%2077009
  10. lol, tanith. i bid on that one earlier this week and didn't bid up to the reserve i guess. the seller offered me a 2nd chance, but i think they wanted too much for it considering i was the only one that bid. you may not be a map expert, but maybe you are! can you tell from the listing if it is an original or a reproduction?
  11. In the same vein, what's a good resource for possibly purchasing old maps of Houston, especially the Heights?
  12. I know we chatted about this restaurant in one of these threads previously and intended on bumping that one, but couldn't find it. Any wise souls on here have news on this establishment? I am guessing it is a no-go at this point, but wondering why and if there are any future plans for the location. Thanks, HAIFers.
  13. I love that I can go there on a Friday night with a couple other moms and kids -oro meet friends to kick off a rowdier night with dinner and 'ritas, feeling equally at home in either case. Ditto the new Studemont building. Considering the work they are having to do to clean up that site, I hope the developers really looked at what can make their location hugely successful here.
  14. I walk by there almost daily. It's really looking sharp (thanks for the pics). My understanding is that they are not increasing the size of the student body at all. How great for those kids! They will have 2x as much space. I have heard that Reagan is the technology magnet for Houston! That's pretty impressive...
  15. well, i doubt it's going to be "families" in these units. i guess the silver lining is more d.i.n.k. cash for the 19th st businesses.
  16. Target and Walkmart hardly carry the same merchandise. That's like saying Palais Royale and Macy's are the same.
  17. I didn't look really closely, but based on the sign it appears the lofts have potential to be mixed use. That would be awesome. I wonder if the property management has been trying to attract higher end businesses and it didn't work. Therefor Payless and ANOTHER matress store. I bet that Payless is going to do really well, though. It's the only one even close to this part of town...
  18. Tamale Factory just painted the building so if they're going away they don't seem to know it. Personally, I boycott Tamale Factory b/c their sign says "Best Tamales and Barbacoa South of the Border." South of which border? Canadian?
  19. As much as I hate, hate, hate the thought of a Chili's, it will at least be somewhere the hubby and I can bring our 1 month old when we just HAVE to get out of the house.
  20. There are a lot of great stores that carry things much more suited to the newer Heights residents. In fact, I would hardly say any of the boutiques on 19th cater to the older set. I am only 34 and much of their merchandise is too youngish for me! Harold's is a little old school but my husband still finds plenty of ties to spend money on there...
  21. Actually, I think we thought it was going to be more like Meyerland.
  22. Very good points, indeed. The only issue is that the people I talk to in Houston who typically say "I don't want to live somewhere where I can hear traffic" have never had the opportunity to live the wonderful places you have. They're sole reasoning is "noise." Perhaps they just can't articulate their argument or unsure of exactly why they're turned off by it, but your very valid reasons are not the ones that have been expressed by the people I was referring to.
