  1. You weren’t paying attention were you. Everyone knew the city was broke prior to the election. You see, Turner had the city running on Covid funds. Pay attention.
  2. Whitmire is hardly a MAGA in sheep's clothing. All he’s done is pause and cancel a few projects that one specific special interest group has gotten up in arms about. Let’s keep things in perspective. What are you talking about? Hollins is not wrong to disclose details about the firefighter’s settlement. It would have been more useful had he done his scenarios earlier, however.
  3. Finner got caught by the “gotcha” media. They are really disgusting… but on to the next guy…meanwhile the real issue of lack of resources at HPD continues unaddressed. Poor Satterwhite…I hope he has a lily white record…which none of us do…
  4. @samagonbe careful or you will end up labeled a “religious type” by @__nevii for theorizing rather than relying on facts and data. Perhaps we should all wait for more facts and data?
  5. Yeah, I reject that theory…a bit too sinister for me. Heck, SJL scared so many people, who didn’t contribute to Whitmire’s campaign?
  6. Article in the DMN on new book... https://www.dallasnews.com/arts-entertainment/architecture/2024/05/06/these-10-buildings-define-texas-architecture/ A new book traces the forces that have shaped modern architecture in Texas. “I am large, I contain multitudes,” wrote Walt Whitman. He was talking about himself, but the words apply equally to the architecture of Texas. I have a substantial library on the subject — monographs, guidebooks, essay collections, scholarly studies, photographic compilations — and not one of those books might be considered definitive. Home, Heat, Money, God: Texas and Modern Architecture (University of Texas Press, $45) gets about as close as any. A chunky, colorful pleasure, it is the work of historian Kathryn E. O’Rourke, who provides the text, and the architect and critic Ben Koush, who supplies the photographs. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanities Center, Houston, 1969 Carnegie Branch Library, Houston, 1982
  7. For my part my sentiments are also informed by Twitter posts of people who frequent this board, and yes I think calling the mayor a clown and an idiot (among other things) is rather hateful (and immature and disrespectful). "In their current form" being the operative words. The mayor has been clear he will not eliminate lanes (otherwise known as road diets) and he will standardize 6 ft sidewalks. Hopefully the mobility designers can get creative with their updated designs.
  8. Didn't Hidalgo put the brakes on Astrodome renovation plans after she beat Emmett? Seriously, it happens all the time.
  9. It’s normal when a new regime comes in to pause and reassess existing projects. Have any of you ever worked in corporate America? My company would reorganize every 5 years. Put the brakes on all the drama and overreaction and wait patiently for the new plan. Stop all the “Whitmire hate.” It won’t get you anywhere but labeled a special interest activist.
  10. This thread has defined hysteria. So you think Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, Dan Patrick are aligned with John Whitmire, Kim Ogg, Annise Parker, and Ed Emmett... to basically trash Houston, Texas. That makes a lot of sense! 🤣
  11. I agree... would look a lot nicer without those parking spots in front.
  12. Click on the link. Whitmire's interview is 2-3 minutes long...
  13. You are really fixated on Alexandra del Moral Mealer. Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock is Metro’s chairperson. Why don’t you focus on her? Cue the Reddit/Twitter hysteria…and the small contingent on HAIF I guess…
  14. TIRZ can't do anything because the city controls permitting. The TIRZ was told to go back to the drawing board and redesign their project. The city gave them conditions (no lane reductions and 6 ft sidewalks). The ball is in their court to come back with a new plan. I think the anti-Whitmire camp needs a new strategy. Calling the mayor names is not going to work. I would also consider replacing Joe Cotrufo because he is not very effective with this administration.
  15. This is what I suspected. Actually, this accusation may be overblown: Because the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) allocated the $40 million in federal funding for the second phase of the Durham-Shepherd project, i sign off on any design changes. But changing the project, even at such a late stage, won't necessarily jeopardize the funding, according to Craig Raborn, th of the H-GAC's Transportation Policy Council. He said the funding source in question is flexible and that the council typically will "try to do everything we c work with project leaders and ensure their initiatives can be completed. Numerous outlets have already reported that Parker would run regardless of what Hidalgo does.
  16. Actually, this belongs here… “The Main Street Promenade is a transformative project defining the next chapter of Main Street and Downtown,” Mayor John Whitmire said in the release. “I am excited about the City's future, including downtown, where we are designing a destination that attracts more people to work, live and play.” The board of the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, a Downtown Houston+ affiliate, on April 9 approved a contract with engineering firm Walter P Mooreand its subconsultants for the project, the release says. The design and engineering phase follows the basis of design, which zeroes in on the themes of safety, accessibility and placemaking. Design recommendations include lighting improvements, maintenance of stormwater drainage capacity, everyday access for business operations, and wayfinding signage, the release says. The most noticeable change will be elevating the street level so that it is even with the sidewalk, Larson said. “That's going to create one uniform plane for people to be able to experience,” he said. “Then we're going to be working with the adjacent property owners and business owners to create more of a uniform experience.” This project fits into Downtown Houston’s “diversification journey,” which aims to bring people downtown for more reasons than just to work in office buildings. The Central Business District still faces one of the highest office vacancies in Houston. Its total availability was 34.1% in the first quarter, well above Houston’s overall availability of 29.7%, according to Avison Young. Property owners are excited about the Main Street 2.0 project, and it could spur more business and leasing activity, Larson said. “They look at this as a competitive positioning piece and how that helps them compete for tenants and ultimately be a place where people want to be, how that helps to really improve their ability to lease out their properties,” he said. The project is about a year from breaking ground, Larson said. Downtown Houston+ hopes it will be finished in time for the 2026 men’s FIFA World Cup matches in Houston.

  18. TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - UPDATE: The Temple Police Department on Tuesday identified 22-year-old Abigail Boatwright and 17-year-old Evan Boatwright, both of Gatesville, Texas, as the victims who died after a wreck involving a tractor-trailer hauling an oversized load over the weekend. The trailer was carrying a distillation column, which is used in the refinery process of oil and gas, according to Temple Fire. It’s believed to have come from the Houston-area and was headed somewhere West.
  19. Happy for Andy's. I'll check out their breakfast again, especially if they offer the early bird specials. I noticed this new location is considerably smaller than the previous location 1,400 SF vs. 2,600 SF but let's see what they do with it...
  20. That's a strange and deceptive rendering...looks like someplace in Arizona. The reality is there is very little room for an outdoor space. The street is right there. Maybe they can squeeze in two patio tables max? The parking area is to the right. How will those customers enter the store?
  21. I’m sure the dead people never fathomed this outcome. I drove these roads recently on the way to Lubbock. On one particular stretch it was a 2-lane highway (one lane in each direction). We had an 18-wheeler in front of us going 40 mph on a 60 mph road. We never had an opportunity to pass so we were stuck behind this guy for 20-30 minutes until the highway widened. In this situation it appears the police escorts did not do their jobs? Also, why wasn’t this large piece of equipment transported over night when fewer cars are on the road? I’m not sure what went wrong here. FWIW on our return trip from Lubbock we stuck to interstate highways even though it was a slightly longer route.
