  1. Honestly, the mayor is not wrong. Even though @004n063 might ride his bike to work. I'll guess he's the only one at his school. Most of you cyclists likely use the bike lanes for recreation. There might be a few exceptions on this website. Let's face it, the bike lanes are empty 90% of the time. If there were more bike traffic the mayor would not be able to uphold his stance so easily. That's "real-talk" and I know unpopular on this forum.
  2. I don't know what you've read recently that's negative. Kelsey is growing like a weed. The medical service it provides is as good as any other Healthcare provider system. I don't use Kelsey but my parents do so I'm extremely familiar with their campuses. I believe the city of Houston also uses Kelsey for their employees.
  3. Is it mean because you are lying? I don't get it. Living downtown is a romantic idea but I would miss the privacy of my own backyard. I'm not even sure who the target market is anymore. One thing is for sure, it's not the average Joe.
  4. I think y'all are romanticizing Avalon Diner or you haven't been there in a while. It's not the wholesome counter diner it used to be!
  5. Where is that monument? I’ve never even seen it. Is it a new addition to the park?
  6. Speaking of 11th street.. today about 2:00 there were two guys in yellow vests with a surveying tripod on the SE corner of Waverly and 11th... not sure what is up.
  7. I'm not sure I understand his quote: "I think we need to have common sense, and I think the bikers need to be protected from the traffic, and they need to do that on bike paths that are recreational and not try to compete with people going to work and school," Mayor Whitmire said. "If somebody wants to politicize that, go for it. That's not my statement. Vision Zero is critical." What does he mean when he says that's not my statement?
  8. The fire department manages EMS (ambulances).
  9. That’s a swell idea, but I’m not aware of any museums that do this. I suppose it is cost prohibitive from a security standpoint. No doubt museums want their masterpieces where they can be safeguarded. The Dallas Museum of Art was vandalized recently. The intruder just busted the glass door and destroyed some works of art! Your idea could work for “starving artist” exhibits?
  10. At what point does it become illegal to block a public street? I see this on one particular street in my neighborhood all the time and there are no restaurants nearby. On my walk today I saw two vehicles parked the wrong way (against traffic) on various streets and at least 4 vehicles were blocking the sidewalk. I know from experience these are traffic violations but where is the neighborhood constable when he could make himself useful?
  11. You have a way of making excuses for Houston's lack of walkability, bike lane usage, transit usage - usually blaming city leadership. But isn't the reality what Cuevas said (although I know he would disagree on bike lanes) "People are making this a big deal but Metro is always adjusting service to different routes based on overall demand." Dallas has a similar issue... much more extensive LRT than Houston but just not enough demand.
  12. While I agree with you… the crux of the issue is this… “Since its debut in August 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the line has carried only a fraction of the ridership officials envisioned for the route. On a typical January work day, the line carried an average of 1,033 riders, according to Metro ridership data.”
  13. Dusty is not looking so bad right about now!
  14. If the Federal government is going to give a blank check to ports to rebuild after disasters like this then I suspect more regulations are coming.
  15. I find this fascinating. Dallas may not renew permit for McDonald's drive-thru in an effort to make the area more walkable. The leaders quoted seem like they have made up their minds. City council has final say...this will be interesting to follow. https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2024/03/26/downtown-mcdonalds-drive-thru-permit-debate.html?utm_source=st&utm_medium=en&utm_campaign=ae&utm_content=DA&j=34840865&senddate=2024-03-27&empos=p1 Debate over McDonald's drive-thru is actually a debate about future of downtown Dallas City Plan Commission member will 'absolutely not' support permit renewal
  16. Well the Titanic hit an Iceberg not another country's property. Insurance should cover a big portion of the cost to rebuild.
  17. Whitmire continues to clean house…replacing the Houston Public Library director of 20 years! https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/houston/article/mayor-john-whitmire-appoints-new-houston-public-19373976.php
  18. The players are raving about the Memorial Park golf course saying it is the “best conditioned course” they have played so far this year! The weather is spectacular. Astros-Yankees (with the roof closed!) 😡 Dynamo plays Saturday night Dallas Mavericks vs. Houston Rockets on Sunday What a weekend to showcase this beautiful city!
  19. You need to think of downtown differently. It is an entertainment district as much as a business district. Improving access to downtown will help Discovery Green, Minute Maid Park, Shell Stadium, Toyota Center, Jones Hall, EADO, as well as the growing number of downtown residents. Having a straight shot from the many hotels downtown to IAH will also be a huge benefit. This connector is long over-due.
  20. After reading The Chronicle article the big “aha” for me was that both Hardy and Elysian streets will be left in tact. Both of those streets could use some major beautification. It seems the toll road is going east of Elysian along the train tracks and will be completely new. Is this really for Spring and the Woodlands commuters? I think all of north Houston benefits and especially downtown.
  21. Biden already said the federal government was going to rebuild the bridge. I read somewhere that the cost of a similar bridge was $5B. I also read that the max insurance coverage on the MV Dali was $3B. As far as the construction workers, why were they not removed from the bridge? If the ship issued a Mayday with enough time for vehicles to be blocked from entering the bridge you would think there was enough time to get a message to those poor construction workers to get the heck out of dodge.
  22. Wow. Some of those vehicles crossed the bridge by the skin of their teeth!
  23. Papabubble got a nice write-up in the Woodland Heights neighborhood magazine. I’ve been there a couple of times. The candy reminds me of old-fashioned Christmas candy. I’d like to see them expand their offerings to chocolate. Hopefully they’re doing ok.
