  1. That's right! I sometimes get those mixed up. He always had too many good speeches lol Couldn't remember if it was that one or the other.
  2. The Houston House is a great and very underrated modernist building. I hope it stays. Could use a new paint job though. It's been very lonely for that building in that area for an awfully long time.
  3. Very true statements in all. It really sucks because as a Libertarian I actually agree that Federal money shouldn't be used for local projects (in regards to transportation it's not being used to help interstate commerce only local). State and local taxes and monies should be used for projects like these. I actually remember being a part of Culberson's Bill Archer Internship when I was in high school and got to spend some time around culberson. He is actually a genuinely good person and someone who really cares about his district and is a very good politician. However, when money has already been passed and you can't do anything to stop it then you might as well put that money to good use! That's just common sense and I think this is where his political philosophy backfired on him, and because he is most of the time in Washington, didn't really step back and see how much good this rail line would have been great for his district and instead, I think, felt like to appeal to national conservatives, needed to turn down the money like many Conservatives did in their districts. It's simply a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and with the booming growth of Houston and how bad of an affect this was it might come back to haunt him. I believe there needs to be a "come to Jesus moment" if you will where the GOP needs to come to grips with. That there is a difference between investment (which is in the boundaries of the Constitution of course), and senseless spending. This is both Nationally and Statewide. Luckily the ban can be overturned and until that time it would be wise to maybe place a quick BRT line as a sort of Trojan Horse to help convince people that a rail line will work. Once ridership is up then rail can be placed. Until that time a BRT can be used to increase general ridership in that area and is generally cheaper to place overall.
  4. Yep. They bought up the old Compaq turned HP campus that is near Skinner Rd. and 290. They have been in there the past couple years and recently they are pouring dollars into the place to renovate it.
  5. I think it's an exceptional example of modernist sports stadium. It was one the first of it's kind in the nation and if you ever read about the building process it's pretty cool. It was built at incredible speed too. Not to mention it's where JFK made his signature "ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country". If you ever read the bit after that he mentions the upcoming game between Rice and t.u. lol. Not many people know that.
  6. See that's the catch. In those pictures the garage was part of a variety of uses for those sites while this is probably going to be a several tenant or maybe single tenant commercial building so not much incentive for them to go above and beyond to dress up the garage. I'm sure in those examples the projects had to contend with much stricter neighborhood design standards, plus probably got incentives to try and do more with the property......also zoning
  7. It's the densest location of Medical facilities not just in Texas, or the US, but the world. If that's the density question you are asking then yes That's about the only thing though.
  8. I don't think any of us really care for the parking solution, but Discovery Green was a very high profile job with a bigger budget because it was seen as a major intervention type project and so got a lot of funding to really change the area. I think this gets it's budget more from donations and so by it's very nature it has a stricter budget. Always something that can be added upon in the future and with development already beginning to pick up in the area, I'm sure after 3-5 years we might see that parking lot turned into something better.
  9. I'm ok with this building as well. It looks a little too fat for the site, but this will be a nice infill for this area. At least they are trying to blend the garage with the rest of the building. Hopefully in the future with more people living in this area we can reduce the amount of parking needed with each new construction or midtown could plan some general parking structures for the whole area. This is a decent start though. Not like it needs to be super flashy. Once you bring the businesses then you bring the demand to have people live in the area because midtown is still relatively a ghost town.
  10. dat music thou.... Could it get any more 70's than that xD
  11. It looks like this one is back on track. Saw them putting up form work for the first floor on my way into town this morning.
  12. Glad that this is going through. I thought it would eventually meaning we should see boots on the ground within the month to start the demo. My guess for the hold up was that there was a restriction on the property because at one point one of the bars was a funeral home. Idk if that makes any difference, but it's possible maybe there was a specific restriction put into place because of the lands former use? Another one is the fact that they had to fuse a bunch of properties together to form a large block. I'm just taking a guess, but honestly who cares at this point. Lets get that crane up!
  13. That has to be it! I thought this one was dead in the water. Could this one really get built??? That would be amazing!
  14. They need a lot of things in this area period. While it looks like a busy downtown area, it always seemed like a commuter destination and that there was nothing immediately around the area to make it a truely functional urban core. Would be nice if more apartments/condos/hotels/ anything for that matter were intermixed in this part of town or at least within walking distance of the TMC. This will also help relieve the demand for parking. Not to mention it's in a great area of town with lots of things to do.
  15. It's actually quiet a humorous observation xD. It's something you don't notice until you really look at it and he is right. While it doesn't really matter it's still funny that whoever did the renderings probably had a generic asian people set in his photoshop and just only used that lol.
  16. I don't know why either. If I was the reason for it then I'm sorry, but not for my comment. I think it's a fair assessment that I made stating that many always complain that we build the same all glass buildings, but because this one a little more curvy then all the sudden it's the best thing ever. You are right it wouldn't have been any different than any other building in the area or in Houston at all. This one at least now has an identity of its own instead of being some curvy glass tower. Quite frankly though it's not that big of a deal. I didn't know so many people were so attached to that rendering. Lets also talk about it relating to the research institute. If both were serving the same function like (research building 1 and now we are building research building 2) then ok I can by that, but this one is a completely different building. It's also not like the research institute was blazing a new trail in Architecture even for the Medical Center. It's quite tame imo and very conservative so I don't see why this new building which is double the floors has to play it safe as well. I don't know....if y'all really like the other rendering then that's cool. I just have to disagree with that.
  17. idk what some of you are talking about but the first building was boring looking. Not to mention that was clearly a conceptual model. By the way I don't want people complaining on here that all we do is boring plain glass buildings, but defend the boring first rendering as "sleek, and sexy". What is "sleek, and sexy" is this latest iteration. It is visually more interesting than the other and is a more refined design. Stop falling in love with conceptual renderings guys (for any building). All they are there for is to display possibilities, not actuality.
  18. Hmm well if they can make that into a mini urban core then that would be preferable.
  19. Any renderings or views of this? I honestly don't know why we need yet another mall when Katy Mills is just across the Grand Parkway.
  20. While I'm not superstitious either it would be nice if they were more sensitive to the cemetery. Maybe not so imposing on that side, and instead staggers back from that edge. Maybe makes that area immediately adjacent to it more like a park or plaza. ......or maybe the developer won't give a crap and just build the building overhanging over the tombs just in spite of it >.>
  21. So I'm guessing when that mound is done it will be the highest elevation in Houston? xD
  22. I would assume so. It wasn't anything from MEP, structural, or architectural that set the place ablaze, but from welders. I'm sure they will be extra careful when even the slightest gusts of wind blow through
  23. Legit! I also really hope that those roads next to it get repaved with stone like in the rendering (probably wont happen), as well as the seamless curb and street look. Love when streets look like that instead the dumb ubiquitous 4-6" curbside.
  24. along with the fact that both bars are closing with one of them saying they are going to be in the second level of the new building. Cafe Express has been handing out flyers about them leaving there building.....so very safe to say that it will pass. More like a formality at this point.
