On Saturday, April 22, Lyric Market will hold a grand opening celebration from noon to 3 p.m. with live music, vendor sampling, a crawfish boil, and activities for children.  It’s also an opportunity for Lyric to introduce several new concepts within its vendor portfolio.

There have been changes at the food hall since it opened in the fall. Several original vendors (Alenbi Falafel + Hummus, Bad Chx, Mission Burger, and Lottie’s Smokehouse) have departed and been replaced by new concepts. Also, Hospitality HQ, a consulting group that originally managed Lyric Market, is out.

BIG DIPPER: Where to find the Houston area's best chile con queso dips

So what’s new at Lyric? Four new concepts have joined the lineup that includes original vendors 1929 Po-Boy Kitchen, Horu Sushi, Kati Roll Wala, Mexology, Press Waffle Co., and Rhapsody Bar. They are: Mama’s Texas Smokehouse (serving Texas barbecue sandwiches, plates, and other barbecue dishes); Francis' Café (from the same owner of Mama’s Texas Smokehouse, serving an all-day café menu of sandwiches, salads, and soups), Café JuJu (plant-based comfort foods and cold-pressed juices); and Starbucks, a new satellite location inside Press Waffle Co.

“We take pride in working with up-and-coming restaurateurs at Lyric Market, and we are excited to bring these new concepts into our food hall,” said Lyric Market general manager Nick Vroulis. “In addition to our current vendor roster, These new concepts will allow both locals and visitors alike to experience the best of the Houston food scene in one visit, from Texas barbecue and vegan comfort food to Indian street food, sushi and Belgian waffles.”

Saturday’s grand opening ceremony also will be the first public viewing of Lyric’s second floor terrace area, a space that can be used for private events, pop-ups, cooking classes, and other community activations.

Lyric Market is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 10 am. to 9 p.m. With ample public parking, Lyric offers two-hour validated parking with a food hall purchase.

I don't expect the current tenants to be all that fills the space. I already saw more foot traffic because of Immersive Gamebox and I'm sure Puttshack will help continue to draw people regularly as well. I also wasn't expecting much in terms of the interior but as more people come I'm sure more features will be added.

The Gamebox wasn’t bad and I like the idea. They should fill this place with as much entertainment options as possible. This is wishful thinking but how cool would it be to turn something like this into an entertainment hub. Each suite offering a different experience like virtual golf, virtual baseball, virtual racing, putt putt, escape rooms, laser tag, bowling, themed bars, rainforest cafe type restaurant, game show experience etc etc. all under one roof-  it would be a big ass mall but for entertainment experiences. Maybe it wouldn’t make enough money on weekdays to be feasible, but it would be nice to have something like that downtown 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Ok dream over.

  4. I walked The Highlight last weekend an I was not impressed tbh. Puttshack is cool and should help but everything else is just lipstick. The third floor is exactly the same and the current tenants are less than impressive. Is there plans to renovate the third floor as well?

This is a big roadblock to your vision for SE Downtown:

I went through on HCAD and highlighted all of the parcels owned by Golconda Ventures, which is a subsidiary of Opicoil, Taiwan's national oil and gas company. Apparently they've owned most of these plots since 1990 and have been content to just sit on them as parking lots for the past 33 years.

Utterly impossible but how cool would it be for the city to boycott parking at these lots.

He's not talking "specifically" about anything. ;-)  He's really just talking about starting to talk. This is in the VERY early stages.  Actually, the pre-very early stages.  Talking about getting together to talk about what we can do with the complex.

. bummer. Was hoping the 2026 World Cup was in play.

It’s interesting how people on this forum are lauding Shell (former BBVA) Stadium.  I’ve never been in it but all I’ve ever heard is it’s a sauna with no air-flow for games.  Was that flaw corrected?  It is a nice looking stadium, I’ll admit.

On Sirius XM channel 84 this weekend I was disappointed by the hosts comments that “he couldn’t get a vibe for how many out of town fans were attending the games because ‘all the venues and hotels are so far apart’”. He gave no credit for all the Discovery Green events which looked great on TV.  I guess development around NRG really is needed.  People want activity around the stadium.

MMP is wonderful and the area is only getting better!

I was out and about all weekend and I spotted out of town fans EVERYWHERE. He must just not be a fan of the city and that’s ok.

Coming soon to Bravery Chef Hall: C3.

C3 will serve coffee and cocktails. According to a banner outside Bravery, C3 will also have cannabis (or maybe THC items). Maybe this will be similar to Wild?

BuiltNearby shared a photo of the coming soon banner. The photo was in an Instagram story last week.

Bravery is located at 409 Travis St in Aris at Market Street.

Maybe they’ll utilize that outdoor patio again.

  9. I’ve mentioned it here before but Ive got a sneaky feeling he’s going to ask for a new area. That or maybe he’s going to ask for some public money to fund a huge face lift to Toyota Center. I just refuse to believe that he’s changed his mind on all that big talk when he bought the team about upgrading the arena and building the Rockets a mixed-use training facility.

Tillman just bought the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Stateline, NV at Lake Tahoe. He probably doesn't have the money now and is rumored to want to buy the Washington Commanders although there are now 2 more bidders.

Yup. He is also building a casino on the Strip from ground up. The Rockets are on the back burner.

Very interesting. When they mention the new areas around SoFi and Jerry World, it reminds you that there's no good reason for the area around NRG to be such a barren wasteland. Especially now that Helix Park is going to be a 5 minute drive away from the stadium, it's not like NRG is in the middle of nowhere.

Glad to hear the powers that be are thinking about this and want to put forth a plan to improve the area. I'm eager to see the plan once they put it together.

It’s all about location. The Astros would have mixed used development to compliment their downtown ballpark.

Skanska has a master plan for Discovery West but no tenants. We won’t see them build until then. But I can envision another sports franchise owner wanting their own mixed use development, especially with Toyota Center’s lease nearing expiration within the next 10 years. Tillman partnering with Skanska on the Discovery West project seems like a possibility, since it would be catty corner to Toyota Center’s front entrance

Or maybe it’s fulfilling HoustonFirst’s master plan for GRBCC and expanding southward. The older renders below show a convention expansion but that could be coupled with a hotel/mixed use component. It would also mean relocation of The Rustic and a GRBCC parking garage if that happened

Yeah I’m not counting on Tilman doing anything slightly progressive with the Rockets.

With the NHIIP getting the go ahead, and the Eado cap, there should be more room for an Astros district.

Cap talk is cool but it seems so far away.

I thought Crane was planning on using the blocks north of Minute Maid towards Franklin.

This mixed use development has always been planned for the area highlight. It’s been mentioned that he does own several lots around the ballpark including those that you mentioned.

I saw another one of those gaps between potential customers and downtown's offerings.

Last night I was walking home from church and went through Greenstreet.  There were a hundred or so (that I could see) people hanging around.  Maybe waiting for a concert?  Dunno.

A number of them were wandering the streets looking for a place to eat.  Some were looking at their phone apps, and a small group was bugging the Greenstreet valets.  No luck.  The valets say this happens  all the time.

These weren't Alley Theater people, so The Palm wasn't an option.  I don't know what M&S is like, but I guess the dress code is similar.  And even if it isn't, based on what I was listening in to, they weren't looking for a sit-down steak dinner experience.

Some enterprising food trucks could make a pretty good penny parking near GS during events.  It's not an ideal solution, but it would be a step in the right direction considering the dearth of dining options at Greenstreet, and the fact that what exists there isn't open full-service hours, or caters to a very specific clientelle.

I wonder what The Shops at Houston Centers hours will be once they’re fully open. There needs to be some signage or something to let people knows what’s inside that building.

I'm curious to see how this development will be modeled off of The Battery in Atlanta and Ballpark Village in St Louis. Those developments seem like they had more space to work with.

The Batter does for sure. If you trust Google Earth here’s how it compares us to Ballpark Village in St Louis.

Yeah, I had a similar reaction to the sky bridge, not because of aesthetics but I just hope it doesn’t detract from street level foot traffic.  Supposedly this development will be modeled off of what they have in Atlanta and St. Louis.  I’ll have to do some research before passing judgement.

Foot traffic was another thing that came to mind as well. It isn’t that hot that we can’t walk across the street 🤦🏻‍♂️. I’m going to guess the hotel is the part that will be connected via skywalk.

Bummer, was a good spot. But it was empty the last time I was there on a Saturday night, so not exactly surprising.

It was the place to be when it first opened but it slowly died over the years.  I watched the Astros win the World Series here so it’ll live on forever in my memory!

  18. Does anyone have any opinions about the above street walkway mentioned in the article? My first thought was an indoor sky bridge like the others downtown but is that really necessary? I wouldn’t want anything added to the stadium that would mess up the aesthetics and the original design. Thoughts?
