Hopefully it is. It's terrifying being right up on memorial drive with nothing separating you from cars going 50+ but a small curb. I always worry that someone is going to be texting, try to change lanes and pop a car over the curb and turn me into hamburger meat.

Hmmm never really thought about that. Has that actually ever happened though?

I would say, named with the shuttle in mind as a sort of vague tribute to the city's connection with space exploration. Not so much the shuttle itself as the whole spirit of NASA's endeavors over the years.

And with the double meaning of being a place for kids to discover things and for Houstonians to discover what urbanism is.

I was watching the Challenger documentary on Netflix last night and it kinda hit me with all the Discovery shuttle talk.

I'm glad they're working on this area. That part of the park may have been the hardest hit from the drought back in 2011, and quite frankly, it's depressing for me when I pass by knowing what was there before. I never saw the Transco Tower from that part of Memorial before they cut all those dead pines down, and now you can see a lot of Uptown from there.

I remember we were rationing water at the time, but to this day, I can't fathom letting so many trees in our prize park die like that. I always thought a city like New York would never let something like that happen to Central Park if a similar situation presented itself there. I don't know that, but that's just my feeling. I wish they'd put an irrigation system in place (assuming they don't have one already) in at least the most mature areas to prevent something like that from happening again.

That said, I am very impressed with what they've done so far on the other (north) side of Memorial and look forward to the finished product on the south side.

Are there any pics of before 2011 from that area?

that second photo reminds me of a cult...i hope this isn't part of the new master plan 💀

Haha what you’re looking at according to the website is

    Memorial Groves

A living memorial to the WWI soldiers who trained at Camp Logan, trees aligned in regiments will shelter gathering spaces for reflection and education among the 100-year-old remnants of the camp.

We've decided to move out of the ROD area to an area like it used to be.   Too many teens, drag racing, apartments, and attached undesirables have taken over ROD.   The low self-esteem is sad to see and we're not into victims nor negative energy.  I wouldn't be surprised if the whole project declared bankruptcy not to mention most of the tenants closing if COVID goes into 2022.   Wishing the old hood well, though, even as we're excited to be moving to what we experience as a much better neighborhood like ROD started as.

Would love for you to expand on the “undesirables” and the “low self-esteem” comments.
