  1. 2. As the driver or passenger of the car? If you were driving, eyes on the road Tiger! 5. The Burger King sign was built for viewing from Hempstead Highway, not the Northwest Freeway. When it was erected, the freeway didn't exist. 10. Probably not recommended whilst driving in Houston, lol. 11. You're not kidding. 13. I don't know what the AppleTree in Bryan looked like, but I always loved the unique look of The Villages' Kroger. That's another one, like Sears South Main, that could've done without the modern update. 18. Someone should've introduced you to Fiesta Liquor. It's much cheaper to mix your own, get a head start, then head out to the bar for one or two of those overpriced drinks, satisfying your social interaction needs. Don't let that secret out btw, lol. 20. I live up 45 from the Fiesta at Airline, and it too had the sparkling signs. It definitely screams 1980s, doesn't it? 24. U-Hauls at 70, landscaping trailers at 35. Just another day travelling on Houston freeways... 25. Most everything is good at the Beaver. I like their summer sausage and cheese pack, but their fudge should have a warning on it for causing addiction.
  2. Signage to come... Y'all love it now, just wait 'til Christmas....
  3. Ah, I see you've been introduced to one of the Instant Alert Suites. Complimentary service, of course, and so much more convenient than the pesky and outdated wake-up call procedure most hotels currently utilize. Enjoy your stay, and oh by the way, the first aid kit is available at the front desk, for your convenience.
  4. ^this. First thing that popped into my mind was Old Humble Road after some study of the pic, but then the east-west configuration was mentioned, which of course takes OHR/Jensen out of the running. I believe we can rule out Hwy. 529, it was two lanes as recently as 30 years ago.
  5. I shudder to think what will happen to our State government with Wendy Davis as Governor and Dan Patrick as the Lieutenant. "Dysfunction, party of two, your legislature is ready." You are correct, I won't be casting a vote on your poll. It's not that I feel anyone here would be childish enough to shun me or anyone else that might participate in it, however, I don't believe this is really the most appropriate setting to open up the subject and have such an intimate discussion. Others will surely disagree, and that's their right to do so. I just don't think you're poll is going to accomplish much more than some hurt feelings and angry HAIFers if you reach the activity level you apparently are striving to obtain.
  6. Smart enough to steer clear of the fire storm that this thread has the potential to create, lol... There IS that whole confidentiality thing when it comes to casting a vote, you know. I must say, I laughed pretty hard when I browsed through your options. I mean, Wendy Davis and Dan Patrick, together?? Are we putting up the closed for business sign on the State, or what?
  7. I'm right behind you in age, bachanon, and any opportunity to advance one's career and pick up a little extra financial worth along the way, is something I couldn't personally second guess. Like my parents, I want my son to have a better life than I have. I guess any of us that have young ones of our own feel that way. It really doesn't matter if you're in your 40s or your 60s, when it comes to advancing one's education and ultimately being able to provide an even more comfortable life to those you love and cherish. I wholeheartedly give you the thumbs up, bachanon. Go for it, and never look back. If you don't, there will always be that lingering thought of "what if I had?" to think over. Bottom line, it's never too late. Given your assessment of the situation, I believe the positives outweigh any negative side effects you may experience in time consumption. Considering what benefits will come from the advancement, for you and your family, I think the slight time loss with your loved ones is well worth the end result. I don't know your background, or whether you are a religious individual, but I'll certainly add your situation to my prayers tonight. Whatever your decision is, make sure it makes YOU happy, first and foremost.
  8. I've been here since 1966. You want to put your "knowledge" to the test? I continue to marvel at why you maintain residence here if you are so dissatisfied with our offerings.
  9. There's a little complex down south of here, called the Johnson Space Center that has a heck of a lot more "wow" factor than 6th St. in Austin. To top that off, Houston has the POTENTIAL to improve itself? You've not been here long, obviously. Houston has improved dramatically within the last 20 years, and it didn't take a 6th St. type scene to accomplish it. The problem with the ignore feature is when someone else responds to the individual you have ignored. It totally breaks up the flow of the discussion when you start reading the response and ask yourself what that person is talking about, because you can't read what initiated the post you are currently reading. That is just as frustrating as reading the poster's thoughts you want to ignore in the first place.
  10. Just an update on 121 Payne. I went to see it Friday night. There is a 2 story addition on the back now, with apparently a 2 car garage built beneath. Also saw that there is a brand new roof on it, new solid glasses where the old cranking windows were, and it appeared that they (or have recently) leveled the support blocks beneath it, and poured new ones as well. It didn't look nearly as bad as the pictures online, up close and personal. Certainly noted that Germantown sure seemed to be much more quiet and serene at night than it used to be just 15 years ago. We were there for a good 20 minutes, and everything surrounding was extremely quiet and peaceful for a Friday night. Glad to have seen the house will not be lost, it sure didn't look promising before. As for Yale, I noticed that Yale Stone has been demoed, apparently this last week. All that sits on that side of the block is Jus' Mac and the abandoned Sunset Heights Food Market (or as we used to call it when it sat on the corner of 26th and Arlington, "the green store"). Looks like this project is moving rather quickly, they were just selling stone materials out of there a few weeks ago!
  11. Boom! That's the recent domain registration by Radio One for KROI, with industry insiders pointing to a classic rap/hip hop format for 92-1, while 97-9 drops all classics from its rotation and focuses on current product. Anyone care to guess the first song on the new KROI? I'll be taking "Boom Boom Pow" by the Blackeyed Peas.
  12. Yessir, it's not quite the same font(?) as the original word Central. Worse yet, when they replaced the word "Bank" on the clock, they never bothered to paint the clock. I haven't paid attention to the back in a longtime, but it used to have a lablescar that clearly said "BANK" underneath and a little below where the current "Square" part now is affixed. It gets better. If they ever light the clock up, as is, the Square is noticeably brighter than the Central. The time colon was stuck on all the time, regardless of whether it was displaying time or temp, and the below zero "-" next to the temp would come on when the time displayed. That was some 25 years ago now. I can only imagine the problems the clock likely has now after all this time dormant. For all I know, it's rusted solid in place. I haven't personally seen it move in years, and it may very well not do so anymore. I don't remember even Ike moving it from the current position. The clock's face has been towards 45 all of this time. I hope against hope that the developer will go that extra mile and go all in on the restoration of the clock, but common sense tells me that it, like The Savoy sign, is a goner. Edited auto-correct mishap.
  13. Thanks, I remember what it looked like once it was freshly restored after my uncle's passing. They had done a lot of work to the house, even moving the staircase entrance from the corner of the kitchen to the living room up front. That was my favorite part of that house, the room upstairs with the old crank open windows. That would be those three windows up front on the roof. I don't know if they kept the second kitchen behind the second bedroom on the left of the house. Only house I've ever been in that had two full kitchens in it. Of course, that's because the house was originally a duplex. I saw the inspection pictures from a couple of months ago. Absolutely sickening. Here's a story about 121 Payne that NO ONE else can tell. When my great uncle passed away, we began emptying the house in preparation of my Aunt Lena moving to Lufkin. When we pulled the pictures off of the walls, 50+ years of tar had dripped down the walls behind them. It was that very day and that very sight when I decided I would never light another cigarette again. I certainly hope you are right, barracuda. The house is just over a century old now, having been built in 1910. Even in its current state, I'd hate to see it lost, but they were sending letters to my uncle about 45 taking out his house for ROW several years before he died, so at some point it will be inevitabile.
  14. Son of a biscuit! That's my great uncle's house! My family sold it shortly after he passed away in December 2001. To see that picture made my heart drop to my stomach. I can't believe they've let that happen. I can still close my eyes and see the beautiful flower beds he had all around the front yard, and of course, the leaning tin garage in the back. I'm thankful that I am the only one in my family still alive to see what's become of 121 Payne. I'll hunt down some photo album pictures and post what the house USED to look like, in all its red and white glory.
  15. Beyoncé: Thuggish and trashy... I think I've heard it ALL now. I guess KROI could've went back to the endlessly annoying construction noise used prior to the launch of News 92. That was quite the reason for someone to stick around at 92-1 to see what was to come. I guess my definition of trashy is a bit different. Kid Rock, Skrillex, Marilyn Manson, and Courtney Love would make my list, Beyoncé doesn't even make it to the same table.
  16. You've hit the nail on the head, 19514, and might I add that the very same lack of attention to the overall sound of the product being delivered to the general listening audience is what doomed the last attempt at FM news (FM News Channel 97-5) here in Houston. I originally hoped that Radio One had done their homework and not repeat the mistakes made by 97-5. They didn't, and as a result we now have 24/7 Beyoncé airing at 92-1 KROI... ...until Monday.
  17. http://m.chron.com/business/article/KROI-92-1-FM-announces-format-change-lays-off-5808955.php Slow down there, BlueDogs... "B92" is what's called a stunt, not the permanent format to come. While it's heartbreaking to hear great people like J.P., Lana, Lanny, Adela Uchida, etc., are now out of a job, the article itself really says it all. It's expensive to run an all news format, and when you've been hemorrhaging money for 3 straight years, at some point management is going to say "enough!" and try a different direction. I can guarantee you that KROI is not going to be a "thug" hip hop station. Co-owned 97-9 will not be neutered for 92-1, in any way, shape, or form. What I expect to see is some type of Adult Contemporary station to launch there in hopes of shaving a share or two off of KODA's ratings and vaulting either KMJQ or KBXX back to the top performing station. I mean why not? iHeart just launched "The Beat" on 93-7, taking direct aim at The Box. Why wouldn't Radio One consider returning the favor and taking numbers from iHeart's #1 station, KODA, in hopes of regaining the top spot in the market for one of the two well established RO properties?
  18. As long as the clock stays, I'm good. Can't wait to see that thing lit up and rotating. The younger crowd has no idea how noticeable and bright that clock was when illuminated. Hopefully, they'll fix it so that the colon doesn't remain lit when it's showing the temperature like it did before it was shut off. The sign on the wall never had the word "Square" that I remember. Like the clock, it said "Central Bank" originally. When it was changed, the word "bank" was removed from both, the clock got an off color labelscar with the word "Square" put in place under "Central", and the wall lost the "Bank" portion and became simply "Central"... ...not that any of that means a hill of beans, lol...
  19. Piggly Wiggly. What's not to love, especially with a name like that? Hated to see it leave Houston. We went to the N. Main location in near Northside. I think it's called El Güero now. Active grocers, I actually don't mind Joe V's on Vets Memorial and Antoine. Good prices, easy to navigate. I don't care much for Kroger itself, but if I'm near the one on 20th and need to pick up something for the Mrs., I'll stop there since I know a good amount of the longtimers that work there. Some, like Paula and Miss Delia, have been there since I was still in school.
  20. http://abc13.com/news/former-eyewitness-news-team-member-thom-dickerson-dies/335633/ For those that don't remember Thom, he was an integral part of Ch. 13's newsroom throughout the 70s, 80s, and some of the 90s. Condolences to his family. He is also the reporter that went off on the Katy Freeway construction of the Beltway 8 interchange, reporting on the construction and saying "just what in the ---- are we doing here anyway??" if that helps make the association for the younger HAIFers.
  21. Thanks for the heads up, Fortune. I'll be on the lookout for activity around the house. I really am serious about that car. I'll take my truck and a towbar down there and bring it home tonight....much to the chagrin of the Mrs., I'm sure, lol. I hadn't seen any "Sale Pending" attachments to the sign, and I was just passing there Saturday morning. Do you have any association with the process, Fortune? Maybe be willing to put a bug in the right ear that I will gladly clear the car out of the garage and pay a fair price for it, as opposed to sending it across the scales for next to nothing? I'd be happy to send a "finder's fee" your way for the trouble. The house is a reminder of just how far out in the sticks that part of Yale was when it was built. The property goes back, I believe, to where Millerview would come through, if it had ever been connected. That's the end of YPV as well, so maybe a second community going in next door?
  22. Nothing turns the heads of the passengers in the car next to you faster than blasting Cause & Effect from a full sized one ton pickup truck, lol. I've got a CD that has a bunch of the old 80s club hits on it including MCL, Info.Society, Samantha Fox, Black Box, A Split Second, and others. It really gathers a variable spectrum of reactions from those nearby if I'm in the mood and really have it cranked up, lol.
