  1. I don't think it's much of an effect at all. My perception is that condos are more difficult to finance because of significant pre sale requirements by the lenders.
  2. I recently had an old friend come into town who hadn't been here in a bit over 30 years. What initially blew her away was just how much bigger downtown has gotten. Then, after a couple days, it was seeing what's going to be in place on Buffalo Bayou before long, trying to play "stump the host" on dining options and losing (she and her husband both have well stamped passports), seeing how walkable downtown has gotten around Market Square, and the museums. They will be back, much sooner than in another 30 years. As we gain convention capacity, and as we have a ton of people come in for things like the Super Bowl (I'm not holding my breath for a World Series, dangit), word will get around.
  3. Hard to say - we're still infested with ants and Methodists, as one early critic put it (if you insert megachurches in place of Methodists) Is losing the gigantic "OWNER HAS BRAIN DAMAGE" car lot sign that much of an improvement? I kinda miss it
  4. Would it not be more accurate to say that Houston was founded by Slick Northern Land Promoters?
  5. I am SO glad to hear that the plan includes "Modern, adequate - sized restrooms." Though I guess living up to stereotypes would involve oil dispensers or some such.
  6. One doesn't have to slavishly mimic the existing surroundings in order to complement them. With the latest renderings, the palette and the massing seem to have hit the sweet spot pretty well.
  7. ^ oh, it's a crown all right. If it was about one third the way down, I suppose we could call it the architectural equivalent of a Wonder Bra.
  8. To me it looks more like the supporting structure for a Roller Derby venue.
  9. I'll come above ground long enough to pile on with Nate and swtsig. The tunnel system in general evolved as a way to get from one office building or parking structure to another, as an amenity built and paid for by the building developers. A tunnel to Allen's Landing from private buildings would require burrowing under a bunch of existing structures, few if any of which would have much interest in being hooked up. The closest access would be the county system among the courthouses, but I really don't see much desire to put in a spur from the tunnel to the criminal courthouse.
  10. BWAH!!! They're also kinda oozing into 801 Travis (the adjacent nondescript black cube).
  11. My guess is that they will use the current drop off/pick up bays as a loading dock. But you are right - the logistics of getting all that debris out of there are going to be challenging.
  12. It is occupied while the reskin is going on. The interim lobby/security area has all the charm of Penn Station; however, the new elevator cabs look sharp. BTW, I'm as perplexed as the next guy as to why it's taking so long to finish, but I have to point out to the gummint haters that the work is being performed by private contractors. I wouldn't be surprised if the new lobby area being added on had a couple of unforeseen issues to work through, and/or the sawtooth corner wasn't going together correctly, since those seem to be the general neighborhood of the delay. IIRC one of the reasons for the reskin was the original wall system leaked, and I can see both of those being potentially problematic details.
  13. It's interesting how the break at the top of the podium acts to re-scale the building to be closer to the size of some of the nearby older building masses.
  14. Iron, Passover started Monday, Easter is this weekend... pay some attention to your poor mother, for cryin' out loud!
  15. Thanks for the photos. It's a much different perspective than what one gets driving past.
  16. What a lurvely parking garage. Seriously, though...four cranes on three projects on that tightly cropped a shot? Just flippin' amazing.
  17. Maybe they could get the designers of the Inferno Tower in Dallas to pitch in on the Marriott Marquis facade.

    METRORail Green Line

I routinely drive North Main. Cramming that giant honkin' overpass down the middle of the street isn't hugely inviting; on the other hand, it's easier to cross on foot than a big hole in the ground would be.
  19. The employees are looking out the windows? Release the hounds...
  20. The entire building was converted to residential. My understanding is that individual units were initially built out more or less "to suit," which has taken for - blooming - ever.
  21. In a fit of transitory dyslexia, I first read that as "Katyvillains."
  22. Crikey - they've even done some noticeable building munching since I drove by there on my way in this morning.
