  1. I can finally listen to morning radio again.
  2. I don't think this is one that people are sad to see go. It seems this developer clearly didn't do a thorough due diligence in selecting it's location.
  3. Haven't heard about this. I think 59 from 610 to the new section could use a serious upgrade. Not structurally, but asthetically. Where did you hear about this?
  4. Wasn't there a study in progress for the Greenway Plaza area for mass transit options through that area and heading west to the galleria?
  5. Then you submit them to the life on the streets with no healthcare, drug or alcohol rehabilitation or job training. Give to your favorite charity, but giving them a dollar or two is counterproductive.
  6. Houston is cheap? The building owners in Dallas and Houston are all the same. I think lighting downtown buildings is being overplayed here. So what if Dallas is more lit up at night. Both downtowns would be a beacon to nowhere. I'd rather concentrate on getting more people downtown at night. Lighting is secondary
  7. I say we drop this one. Let's let other websites spread the lunacy.
  8. : of, relating to, characteristic of, or constituting a city http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book...ionary&va=urban According to Webster. Not once does it mention walkable. Sometimes I think a lot of the people on this board don't really know what they're asking for. Have you lived in "urban" areas. I lived in NYC and couldn't wait to get back. Give me my space and keep it cheap. One 40 minute trip on a subway in search of an ironing board would change a lot of minds here.
  9. I completely agree. The camera will assume guilt without considering any facts. What happens if the car behind you is barreling down on you and it's much safer to run through the light, rather than come to a stop. I've been in situations where I drive more to protect mine and my passengers lives.
  10. firstngoal, I was thinking of drafting my own letter on this subject. Any input would be great. I think getting as many signatures as possible would be a good thing. There are also a lot of developers in the area that have a vested interest. They might be good to talk to as well. I'm really not sure where to start, so if anybody has any input, please share.
  11. I was flipping through the channels and saw Reality Bytes and there were scenes from the top of a building downtown. I haven't seen the whole movie, so I don't know how much of Houston was shown.
  12. It is up to UP, but public pressure might help in their decision making. I'm a firm believer that the squeeky wheel gets the grease. By the way, I live in a friends townhome now and am moving into the Estates this month. I love this area and run at Bayou about 4 or 5 times a week. It has so much potential. I've thought about drafting a letter too and maybe spending a couple of weekends trying to get signatures from runners at the bayou and residents in the area. If you have any experience doing it, I guess that would be great.
  13. Has anyone noticed the old train tracks running down Memorial Heights Blvd? They are obviously dormant and would make a great greenway. According to Patricia Joiner at Knudson Associates (the firm in charge of the Memorial Heights TIRZ), they've tried numerous times to get Union Pacific to sell the land for a greenway, but they wont budge. This would be a perfect spot for one, and would tie in nicely to the bayou. Right now the only access is over the narrow Studemont overpass. It's really inconvenient and extremely dangerous. I found this to be a little disconcerting and very confusing, because the tracks are not in use and lead to nowhere. Why would UP refuse to work with the TIRZ? I tried to email the Real Estate manager in charge of Harris County at UP, but I got no response. I suspect they have no good answer. I guess I'm just using this forum as a soapbox, but this really irks me.
  14. cleaning the site? That's a new one. Why don't they start clearing the site?
  15. I'm not "from" here. I doubt most of us are. Why does it matter? He's a big ambassador for the city.
  16. This is all great. Now all we need to do is dye the water. I jog past the bayou four or five times a week on the west side of downtown, but I never realized how dirty the water looks. I guess you're not as drawn to the water when there are other things to look at. Is there anything that can be done?
  17. I can't look that far out. With the Randalls in Midtown, I don't see anyone jumping into the mix in the CBD anytime soon.
  18. "What's going to happen to Houston if North Americans stops using so much oil? Like, in 50 years, oil consumption could be a third of what it is today." Will never happen. Our growth in consumption will slow down, but this scenario will not happen.
  19. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...tml?jst=b_ln_hl Swedes chose Houston over Austin Austin's efforts to attract a Swedish consulate office have been dashed. Austin and Houston were both in the running for the career consulate general office, which is one step down the governmental ladder from an embassy. But the Swedish government announced on Friday it chose Houston over the capital city because of Houston's role as a major international city. In a phone call to Houston mayor Bill White, Swedish Ambassador Jan Eliasson said Houston is the center of a very "dynamic region." The United States is Sweden's largest export market and is continuing to grow. The Houston consulate will be Sweden's third in the U.S. The other two are located in New York and Los Angeles. "The southern part of the United States is a vibrant and dynamic area with strong links to Sweden," says Minister for Industry and Trade Thomas
  20. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/business/2896838 Apartments may become condo units By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle A Denver real estate firm is buying 3333 Allen Parkway, a new high-rise apartment building along Buffalo Bayou that it is likely to convert into condominiums. ADVERTISEMENT BCN Development, which is expected to close on the 33-story building next month, has developed several upscale condo projects in its hometown and is starting to look in other cities. President Craig Nassi won't talk specifically about his plans for the Houston building, but he said his firm recently began buying rental buildings to convert into condominiums. "We believe the Houston market is on a very positive upswing," Nassi said. The purchase price has not been disclosed, but sources say the sale will exceed $225,000 per unit, or $56.7 million. Located midway between downtown and River Oaks, the 33-story building has 252 apartments. It is about 86 percent leased, according to O'Connor & Associates, a consulting firm. Rents average $2.09 per square foot for units that range in size from 900 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet. Simmons Vedder & Co. developed the high-rise, which is on the former site of the Gulf Publishing Co. building. nancy.sarnoff@chron.com I'm sure this is old news, but more than $225,000 per unit seems a little pricey. I hope this works out for them.
  21. This looks awesome. But you have to wonder how the CBD will fare. They already have some of the highest office vacancies in the country now. I wish they could incorporate it more with downtown.
  22. dynegy el paso global santa fe sysco service corporation international
  23. apartments mean an abundance of a young professional crowd, that hasn't saved enough for a home. Do we want these people moving out of the city?
