  1. What's with all the subforum nazis around here recently? I've seen more people complain about something not belonging in 'going up' in the last 2 weeks that I have in the previous 5 years. Just press 'new content' button .... Who the hell even searches by sub forum. Annoying as crap.
  2. Most cities aren't blessed with shallow bedrock like manhattan. Our soil isn't an issue for us. You can do a floating platform.... You remove soil approximately equivalent to the weight of the building. Or... It's the concrete foundation is approx the weight if the building. One of those, I don't remember the specifics. I wanna say One Shell Plaza has a 60' deep foundation. You can also drill hundred and hundreds of deep piers. Shanghai has no bedrock, clay soil like ours... And deals with earthquakes.... Hasn't stopped them with the supertalls
  3. #3 Williams tower.... 901 ft... 69 stories. #4 Bank of America ..... 780 ft.... 58 stories 800 ft and 100 stories doesn't jive together. Hobby is 8 miles away and downtown just isn't that wide.... There are no airport imposed building height restrictions here. ...edit. Looks like someone beat me to it
  4. It appears we are picking strait up and not with the spread. Is this what we want? Is it even an option? Is it too late to change if the majority of the group wants it?
  5. Reminder... We need to know what haifers to praise for bold picks and rag on for dumb picks.... So either your team name or member name needs to reference your haify handle.
  6. Go ahead and mail me my 'participation ribbon' ... I'm in.
  7. No takers ?? No kill shelters have like a 50 cat waiting limit; filled to capacity. Have tried craiglist with no results. Anyone else have any ideas ?
  8. I don't mind the dealership license plate frames. Those are easy to remove if you are like me and have a peculiar hatred for them. But the metal, metal looking plastic, or sticker decals is another thing. I don't know what kind of adhesive is used, but I wouldn't trust myself to remove them from my brand new car without possibly harming the paint.
  9. <Rant> Dealership tags on new cars have always pissed me off. New cars don't arrive at the dealership with the decals on; these are things the dealerships slap on. When I ordered a new car in 05, I insisted they not be put on my car, and the dealership complied. My thought process is this: The Dealership is not paying me a monthly fee to rent advertising space on the back of my new car, therefore they have zero right to clutter up the back of my new investment with their crap decal. As a tangent, it's only clutter that the middle class has to deal with. Can't recall the last time I saw a Mercedes, BMW, or Corvette with dealership tags. What started this trend, I don't know, but dealerships get away with it because it doesn't occur to consumers to fight back. You owe no loyalty to the Knapps, Gullos, and Mac Haiks of this town, and they sure as heck aren't sending you a monthly rental check. </Rant>
  10. And I need a new mommy or daddy. I'm approximately 6 yrs old, I'm a sweetie, and I'm very quiet. Seriously, it's like 90% of the time my vocal chords don't work, so I usually just squeak. I'm small, I don't eat a lot. I'm a little on the shy side but once I get to know you, I might show you my 'Fainting Goat' trick to get you to pet me. But here's the deal. My parents don't love me anymore. Okay, not really. But they are moving and could only take one pet so my brother and I had to draw straws. That black furry asshat won. And apparently all my aunts and uncles and grandparents have foresaken me.. which is why I'm here today. So.. if you are a cat person, a good person, and are looking to adopt.. please send my asshat abandoner soon-to-be former daddy agent a private message. Thanks, and hoping to hear from one of you right meow.
  11. I was wrong about the Stealth Freeway Brigade.... It's only the Stealth Freeway Squad. From a HPD blog.... Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. were joined by Houston Texans player Mario Williams yesterday to unveil the Pro Bowl linebacker's donation of five Chevrolet Camaros to HPD's Traffic Enforcement Division. These new traffic enforcement vehicles will be outfitted to run radar, have low profile lights and ghost writing to allow them to blend in with regular traffic. HPD will use them on and off freeways to enforce traffic violations. “Ever since Mario came to Houston, he has certainly been a friend to law enforcement and is civic minded and wants to help his community,” said Chief McClelland. “These five Camaros will increase the capabilities of the police department to address speeding, aggressive drivers and ensure the safety of the motoring public. I can’t thank him enough for this generous donation.” Williams was assisted by Knapp Chevrolet in obtaining the new 2011 police package Chevrolet Camaros for HPD.
  12. Houston cops wear BDUs today. BDU in material and plethora of pockets, not in color (they are the same color as their normal pants) Sorry I couldn't find a better photo... The new uniforms that August posted, look to be the exact same as now, except for color. I'm sure if they have a BDU pants option, it would go mostly unnoticed, like it does today. It makes sense that most PDs would have a more tactical alternative uniform. Personally.. I think the most tactically advantageous uniform, the least restrictive, would be the following.....
  13. I'm guessing we'll still have to put up with the Stealth Freeway Brigade as well... T.G.F. Cobra
  14. The actual field isn't below grade now... The only thing I like about that rendering is the demolishing of G Rollie for an entrance plaza. Has it served any purpose for the last decade, I don't think so.
  15. Kyle Field is fine as is... You don't tear down a 85 yr old beloved collegiate stadium for luxury boxes. If they have to add seats, I'd prefer they don't touch the existing stadium... and add a partial Zone-like structure opposite the Zone, between the field and the new Bright building - Perhaps just doing the top 2 decks integrated over or front left and right of the Bright Bldg. The Zone added 20k... I'd be happy only adding 10-15k more seats if it means NOT doing a full demo and reconstruction.
  16. Thank you Barracuda.. exactly the character I was thinking of. Point being... and this could spawn a very interesting thread on Haifer's visual perception of other Haifers.. But if awacs showed up at a happy hour and he/she wasn't exactly like Lorraine, I'd be sorely dissapointed. Not trying to be mean, awacs....it's your shared catch phrase that does it.
  17. Nope.. not that old a character and no gender ambiguity. I wanna place her existence in the 04-08 range... though i could be off since I don't regularly watch anymore.
  18. Does anyone remember the recurring SNL character from maybe a decade ago. Female, 40s, frumpy, fanny pack(?), complete disregard for social ettiquete. One episode has her at an all-u-can-eat buffet sticking her head under the salad guard and sneezing. Says "Uggghhhh" in a drawn-out shuddery voice a lot. No idea who played her.
  19. OMG OMG OMG... this is on Bissonnet.. That road is totally unsuitable for any sort of multi-family development. Somebody call the Ashby Nazis.
  20. All-around great news. From http://www.mysananto...-be-3642958.php The contract to create a Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing in College Station is likely worth at least $1.5 to $2 billion over the next 25 years. “It's the biggest federal grant to come to Texas since NASA, quite frankly,” Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp said. The economic implications for the College Station area are also significant. About 1,000 jobs will be created during a construction phase that will last about five years. After that, there should be many more, said Dr. Brett Giroir, the Texas A&M scientist who led the university's bid. Additionally, the development should attract drug companies to invest in or relocate to the area. For the state's biotechnology industry, the announcement is a game-changer, said Jacqueline Northcut, president and CEO of BioHouston, which promotes life sciences commercialization in the Houston region. In the Twittersphere, there are numerous fake joke accounts that are fun to follow when news breaks. Here is TAMUS-Regents as the news broke Monday... Big press conference in Austin this afternoon. We've been told we have to put on pants, which honestly is a pretty tall order on a Monday. We hate big government. Unless it's handing us hundreds of millions for a bio research thingy. Then we're cool with it. That's right. When the monkey swine flu zombie apocalypse happens, we'll determine who lives and who dies. http://is.gd/AggieDrugsRUs Austin's really excited about getting a Trader Joe's. We just locked up the biggest federal grant of the 21st century. Priorities. Our top priority: Making all vaccines maroon. We're a perfect fit for vaccination research. We've been treating boys coming back from Lubbock road trips for decades. First order of business: Remove all hand sanitizer from System buildings. We can't supply if there's no demand, ya know? We anticipate this biomedical thingy will create more than 1,000 jobs in the Brazos Valley. Mostly in the "test subject" field.
  21. I believe the exact opposite is true of Toronto. I don't know if it was Jax or Editor.. but I seem to remember previous discussions of overflowing trashcans being an issue there cuz people stopped giving a damn. Perhaps I remember wrong; hopefully one of them will chime in.
