  1. Always thought this was a bizarrely interesting building. Found an update on it here with pics - not finished on the inside - but a lot of progress made. http://www.nknews.or...d-never-finish/ Look at the size of the dining room - maybe they should have built this for the new GRB convention center hotel.
  2. Agreed. Maybe it was an overbroad generalization. I also will look forward to you policing all the other threads for everybody else's overly broad generalizations that crop up with alarming frequency.
  3. I saw it a couple of times - pretty sure it was by BUI practititoners. Wonder if they can get a ticket for that there? Probably wouldn't want to insult them either - never a good idea to get into a kerfuffle when you are not a local.
  4. Yeah - but they will run you over even if you aren't on the red path, there. Guess they have a militant strain there also. You just learn to keep radar up in all directions. But at least they will ring a bell before they smack into you.
  5. Yes, yes. I should feel guilt for standing in front of a bus stop. And two personal actions within a one-year period IS too many when according to the law, there should be zero. But we have to justify everything for the militant cyclists who do no wrong. Gee - I didn't see you defending other people who drive large trucks, etc. just because of the the actions of a few.
  6. No, it's those pedestrians who are being selfish. Don't they know that the sidewalks belong to the bike riders also? At least in the Galleria area they do. Twice this year alone, while standing still at a bus stop in front of Neiman's, I have been almost run over by a cyclist barreling through at a pace that would have been reasonable on the street. I guess Uptown cyclists believe they are in Amsterdam or something, but at least there they ring a bell there before they plow into you. Then coming into work on a Saturday, I get to wait behind other cyclists meandering down both lanes of Post Oak, weaving back and forth like they in a cul-de-sac on a Sunday stroll. Guess I was being selfish for wanting just one lane of the road. There is definately a breed of cyclist who is so important and uber-cool that they do not need to follow the rules designed for mere mortals. Also agree that people can't drive around here. In the Galleria, I see daily occurances of people without any understanding of one-way streets, or parking garages that flow one way only. I guess because it's a destination that draws people in from the burbs who are unfamiliar with non-cul-de-sacs. But that belongs in a different thread. This one is griping about bicyclists.
  7. So does the rest of Highway 59 (outside of Houston area) have to be built to interstate standards by the state/local authorities before it can be designated as Interstate - or is there additonal funding to do this magically coming from some outside source? Just wondering because at the rate they are progressing - my grandchildren might see the final outcome. Parts of 59 north into East Texas have been slowly rebuilt over the last 10 years or so. But only in unconnected spots. And 59 going south is in terrible shape for large stretches. You can get a really bad rhythm going on the concrete joints in south Ft. Bend and Wharton Counties. It's even worse when you are towing a decent load.
  8. Looks like it might have devolved into wetlands. And they don't want to get into trouble for filling those in.
  9. Almost 2200 ft. tall. Now this is what a Mixed-Use development should be. It includes a Super Inter-Galactic Hotel. I bet that's at least a couple stars higher than than an Intercontinental. http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2012/09/17/chinatown_super_tower_will_solve_all_urban_problems.php
  10. So is there anyway someone could steal the tires on the 747 so it can't take off tomorrow? Then we can keep it here where it belongs.
  11. It's a pair of ragged 6 or so story buildings on the the Southwest Freeway - between the frontage road and Westpark. Next to the City of Houston Recycling center. For years, it looked derelict, but over the last year or so, someone has slowly been fixing it up. Wondering if anybody knew what it was and what it is going to be? http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=29.725365,-95.481942&spn=0.000037,0.015557&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=29.72537,-95.481844&panoid=lLJTnh17jIXHID8MtvQbXg&cbp=12,270,,0,0
  12. Would the old downtown Sheraton be the exception that theoretically proves your rule?
  13. Hah - I actually thought about posting something along these lines also. It would definately be quick, cheap and effective.
  14. And why is it so sad? In that picture from 1985 - what was there 30 years previously - not a whole lot. Old decrepit houses, scrubby industrial buildings, falling down hotels. That's why they were leveled for parking lots. It's just by 1985, the other 1/2 of downtown had just finished a ridicoulous 20-year boom that had transformed it and made the contrast so evident. If you had taken this picture in 1965, nobody here would be throwing a hissy fit.
  15. There's already about 3 Capitol Ones in about a 5 mile radius. Guess the older one on 762 will close if this opens. As long as they don't send Alec Baldwin here. Raising Cane's is good. I like them better than Chick-fil-A - less crowded. The Carl's Jr is almost finished. The Arby's that closed on the old part of the development has been being worked on for about 2 months now. Big new addition to the front - new dining room. Sign finally went up confirming 59 Diner going in there. Ambivilent about this one - last three times I went to the 59 Diner, I swore never again. Guess I'm a slow learner. If Papa Murphy's Pizza is coming - does that mean no Pied Piper Pizza anymore?
  16. Not defensive at all. Just annoyed about the standard answer that suburbs don't want transit because of the color of the riders and fear of them. What suburbs want in transit is reliability and frequency and ease of use. That probably won't happen except for things like the P&R routes because it is not cost-effective to send a multiple train/bus/rickshaw/whatever route to most suburbs. So if you only have a couple of buses/trains a day or you have to make 3 transfers to get anywhere - no one is going to ride because it is just easier and more reliable and better use of time to just drive. Suburbs in Houston won't get anything for years till the density is there. And there won't be any ridership till the above needs are met. It's a catch-22 for which there is no good answer.
  17. St. Agnes Academy bought this like two years and built a sports complex there. Not sure why this old thread popped up to the top to cause mass hysteria. http://swamplot.com/el-corral-and-the-fields-of-st-agnes/2011-08-09/
  18. This is why I quoted you. If you are not hinting that the suburbs are racist - what on earth are you hinting? Half the suburbs are full of minorities. Why would they not want themselves to drive around in their own neighborhoods? Why would they only fear two groups of people not like them being in their neighborhood if they were not harboring racist tendencies. That is definately what you are implying. I was just pointing out that basically everybody is racist/bigoted. Every neighborhood wants everybody in it to be just like them and they start throwing up arguments/rules/defenses to keep the "others" out. Whether it is suburbs saying no to buses, the Heights throwing a hissy fit about Wal-Mart, ad nauseum. By the way - what is an "average suburbanite" who doesn't like Obama supporters? Is it the black family living in Missouri City attending Windsor Village UMC on Sunday? Or maybe the black family in Pearland, or the hispanic family in Pasadena, or the hispanic family in Rosenberg? You seem to have a vision of the suburbs as a place of lily-white glowing faces that are all huddled in their living rooms around a KKK hood hiding from the roving brown invasion on public transportation. There might be some suburbs like that - but the reality is they are a big splattering of color. I think the real segregation comes is by income rather than by race. Things in the suburbs are definately segregated there - and that is by structural defination. But it also exists in the inner city.
  19. Well if it had been true, at least it would have permanently killed the Earthquest thread.
  20. I found this....... http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/courier/news/article_dfd91990-e85a-5bc8-91b7-ebd06f118398.html Said it was an April Fools joke. Who knows?
  21. Yes, yes, yes. People in suburbs are nothing but ignorant racist nimbys. Not at all like the enlightened worldy citizens-saints of the inner city. You know: The good people who don't want the riff-raff and crowds that will come with the 22 story buidling being built at Ashby and Bissonnet. The good people who live in Afton Oaks who don't want MetroRail running thru their pristine neighborhood destorying the fabiric of their society with poor people. (i.e. blacks & hispanics) The good people of the Heights who bemoan the loss of their grand ol' ways of life because of the atrocity of a Wal-Mart besmirching the fabric of their society and bringing in untold numbers of low-life. (i.e. poor, blacks, hispanics) Or the building of an old folks home because it will ruin their perfect little world of jaunting down to a safe and sanitized "world market" experience and bring in hordes of cane-toting gang-bangers. The good people of Midtown who are gnashing their teeth that a non-profit is moving in that will feed the hungry (and not even at that site) and bring in hordes of alcolholic stalkers who demand protection money. (i.e. mentally ill, homeless, poor people) Especially the last two - the Heights and Midtown used to be full of minorities and poor people and nothing else because nobody wanted to live there. Then they were "discovered" - when were they lost again? - and people started pushing the minorites out. Only its a subtle thing - they call it gentrification - but it has the same effect. Everybody looks like everybody else and they are all the same socio-economic class and everybody is happy about their wonderful world. But it's the suburbs who are racist.
