  1. Does anyone remember the "Circus Circus" restaurant over at 6015 Westheimer? It was one of the early Pappas restaurants, during the 80s. The official name was just "Circus". But EVERYONE always called it "Circus Circus". Does anyone remember why?
  2. With Ethan Allen moving out which took up almost if not all the entire top level of this building...what is to become of this space and/or building? (*The new Ethan Allen location in Uptown Park opened this past weekend on Nov 23rd) At first I thought this would mean perhaps a new start for this corner but noticed a Vision Corner or similar place moving in downstairs... It made me think then, what would be a good business to move in upstairs in the old HUGE Ethan Allen place? Maybe something like a Lucky Strike or Pinstripes? Or???
  3. I've always wanted to create this thread but never have. Has anyone ever shopped for their designer furniture at Roch Bobis? While located at 4810 San Felipe Street, I've passed by it a thousand times but never went inside. When will this small retail building be demolished for something taller? This is prime Uptown real estate! I'm the parcel can contain something that would be a higher density use.
  4. I was wondering if anyone knew the original architect for this early 1980s office building located on San Felipe in Uptown. All I can find is the most recent remodel architect.
  5. Been in Houston a lot recently and a vacant lot that looks like it used to be a restaurant has captured my attention. The building was razed sometime around 2007, and attempts to find an address or the name of this have been elusive. The biggest clue left behind is a large sign that is only partially blacked out ("J***'s") but other than that, I got nothing. Makes me wonder if it closed LONG before it was demolished. https://www.google.com/maps/@29.7452381,-95.4566661,3a,75y,49.4h,101.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s0ttV4oF1bS5wuhThn1wA5A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
  6. From the HBJ, I don't have access to the whole article: "The Four Oaks Place office complex may soon be more appropriately named Five Oaks Place. The owner of the 1.8 million-square-foot office complex in the Galleria area is looking at spending between $100 million and $120 million to develop a new office building at 1550 Post Oak Blvd., where a 24 Hour Fitness is currently located" Webcam: http://oxblue.com/open/transwestern/5oaks Renderings, and article from 10/13: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/breaking-ground/2013/10/photos-developers-break-ground-on-bhp.html http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8518/8507440817_0fefe9fa75_b.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-40.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-42.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-43.jpg
  7. To anyone who has lunched at Grand Lux in the Galleria area, I have a couple of questions. How well-lit is the resturant at lunchtime, and do you remember what is the price range of the lunch menu (if they have one)? I've looked at the website, but the online menu doesn't show any prices. Thanks in advance.
  8. Noticed this CBRE billboard on Westheimer Road at Bering Drive. Who owned the land for parking? Was it the church or library? Wonder what will happen here.
  9. Over 1 million square feet -- Four Oaks Place, owned by TIAA-CREF and managed by Transwestern.
  10. Does anyone know about this? I believe I found a small church on the corner of Post Oak at Westheimer! I went onto their website and their "about us" page mentions: Founded in 1939, The Church of St. John the Divine is a vibrant congregation dedicated to Changing Lives for God in Christ. Was this the original location before they moved to 2450 River Oaks Blvd? Cool find!! From the newspaper Southwestern Times dated July 5, 1951 : Wright Graduates from Baylor Med With High Honors Graduating from Baylor Medical College with high honors, Bob Wright of 4321 Cynthia will intern at the Jeff Davis Hospital, after which he plans to go to Japan as a medical missionary. Dr. Wright, who has lived in Bellaire for the past three years, has a wife and two children. He was lay pastor at the Baptist mission on Westheimer and Post Oak Road until his studies and hospital duty during his senior year forced him to resign. The Alvin Sun dated April 29, 1954: Grace Church to Attend Presentation On Sunday afternoon (May 2) members of Grace Episcopal Church School will attend the Annual Mite-box Presentation Service which this year will be held in Saint John the Divine Episcopal Church, Westheimer and Post Oak Road, Houston. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Members of Grace School are asked to be at the Parish House, ready to leave at 2:45 p.m. Parents of the children will provide transportation. Aerial photograph of the building located at Post Oak and Westheimer in 1957:
  11. Current strip center will be demolished to make way for a Break Time Market gas station, convenience store, and car wash. 3161 West Loop South Loop, 4902 Richmond Avenue, Etc. http://btcmstores.com/ https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/TABS/Search/Project/TABS2021001363
  12. Recently listed on Loopnet. Dave & Busters is folding due to COVID is my guess. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/6010-Richmond-Ave-Houston-TX/21154618/ https://powersearch.jll.com/us-en/property/240043/6010-richmond-avenue

  14. Came across this 1959/1960 photo of a barren area of the southwest freeway construction. Looking outbound toward Post Oak Blvd. at Westpark Dr. In one parcel of land, located off McCue Road, there is a mansion all by itself. Does anyone know whose house this was?
  15. Came across this arcade token on Ebay. Does anyone recall the game room located at 5146 Richmond? I believe this would be located in the (present day) shopping center across from Best Buy? The retail center with the Spec's Liquors, Alta Beauty, etc. etc. Can we date this business? I'd say 1960s or 1970s? Just a guess, no clue really. The Wiz Gameroom 5146 Richmond Houston, TX
  16. Would any members know what happened to the old GM Training Center on Richmond Ave, there was a Fred Astaire Dance Studio across the street in a large shopping center. I have no idea when it finally closed but it was open until the 80s although at that time it had been reduced to one class rather than all of the divisions having a separate class room. As I remember it was very near the intersection of the freeway.
  17. I saw this lot get fenced up earlier this week and was wondering if anyone knows what's going on here. This used to be "Chinese cafe" a couple of years ago but it closed down and the lot has been looking like a mess lately, so essentially anything would be nice here........except another gas station lol
  18. While looking at the Briar Hollow Estates plat map, I noticed San Felipe Farms near Buffalo Bayou, across from Memorial Park. The subdivision plate is dated December 1938. San Felipe Farms would have been 84 acres. What's this about? Rice fields? Would love to know more.
  19. Does anyone remember there being a bungee jump right off the west loop ? It seems it was just south of 59. For those of you that do remember it, does anyone have pictures they can post?
  20. While reading The Thresher dated November 14, 1952 I noticed an article with the term Post Oak Stables. I did some research and found out there used to be both a Polo Association and a stables in a Post Oak Field. I'd love to hear more about this. I know the HPD has their (old) stables on North Post Oak Road. Would that general area be the old Post Oak Stables (and fields)? I believe Jim Abercrombie and Leopold Meyer's Pin Oak Stables was originally located on Post Oak Road? I'll have to find that article again. This might be the original location of Pin Oak Stables. A decade later and the Pin Oak Stables was listed as being on 610/Westpark in Bellaire where the current Pin Oak Middle School, Houston Community College, and Home Depot are.. 5601 W Loop S, Houston, TX 77081. The book "Houston, a history and guide" published in 1942 has this blurb about the fields in Uptown: Polo: Houston Riding and Polo Club, 8M. SW. On Westheimer Rd., Adm. 50c. Post Oak Road Field, across Post Oak Rd. From Memorial Park, Adm. Free. Rice Thresher ad:
  21. Noticed this sign today at San Felipe at Fountain View. Weird restrictions. Small apartment or a few town homes here?
  22. Can anyone make out the location? Edit: Based on the surrounding buildings, this would take out the small strip center at 1801 Post Oak in Uptown. https://www.google.com/maps/place/1801+post+oak+blvd/@29.7474982,-95.4611141,3a,75y,87.71h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sXd5WoOxdOvHSXYP4vzM0OQ!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xff016152317bbfc1?sa=X&hl=en-us https://vinetower.com/project/luxury-hotel-residences-houston-tx/
  23. This is a great link. I've scrolded through it quickly and I think I see the old Grady School house in there. It was a single story and located on the corner of Westheimer and Post Oak Rd. were Neiman Marcus now stands. For years before the Galleria was built it was used as a Purina Feed Store (that's the part I remember). The new Grady School on Sage Rd. was built in the 50's. All the snooty Tanglewood kids went there.
  24. The area just to the west of Briargrove, across the drainage ditch was the Bob Smith Little League playing fields. There were several diamonds with bleachers close to Westheimer. As you went back, closer to San Felipe (which didn't go through at the time), there were large mounds of earth, probably left from deepening flood control ditches in the area. We would ride our bikes on these "hills" and made several mountain trails back there. Eventually development occured, and apartments filled in the property from Westheimer to Woodway. I remember a big fire in later years destroyed several of these buildings, but that's different story.
