  1. The current renovation of this location is damn ugly in my opinion. The location is at 502 Main (corner of Main and Prarie) in the former Crazyhorse Cantina location. I know that is an ideal location for a fantastic bar or restaurant. The architectural elements are there unfortunately covered by what it appears to be plywood. The name of the bar looks like it was cut out by a junior high shop class using a table saw. The place seems to have a huge potential if some investor would spend some money on renovation rather than cheap crap that been there in the last few years. I have also heard the food was crappy. Thoughts/Opinions?
  2. Not technically the Heights....but couldn't find another area to put this. Houston restaurant co. to open ZZ Top-themed Tex-Mex joint By Laura Gillespie – Reporter, Houston Business Journal 4 hours ago Tres Amigos Café y Cantina will replace Shepherd Park Draught House at 3402 N. Shepherd Drive April 22. Ken Bridge, CEO of Delicious Concepts Restaurant Group, which owns both concepts, is turning the draught house into a ZZ Top-themed Tex-Mex restaurant, showcasing Bridge’s extensive collection of ZZ Top memorabilia. Stewart Skloss, founder of Pura Vida Tequila, as well as ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons, both helped come up with the idea for the restaurant, but they have no ownership in it. Tres Amigos will serve classic Tex-Mex, with combo plates, tacos, burritos, weekend tamales, queso and more. On the drinks side, it will have margaritas with Pura Vida tequila and Mexican beer. The 1,500-square-foot space will be redecorated to show off Bridge’s ZZ Top memorabilia from floor to ceiling, but otherwise will be relatively unchanged. The inside seats 40 to 45, with another handful of tables on the patio. The current concept features punk, pop and rock memorabilia pieces from Bridge's collection. Bridge, who just announced the transition of his concept Ritual into Mapojeong Galbijib, a Korean barbecue restaurant, said he likes to change up concepts as he comes up with new, progressive directions. “We’re all ready for a new frontier; I think we’re all ready for a change. For us as a company, and for me personally, I’m ready to change things up and push forward,” Bridge said. “I’ve always wanted to do Korean barbecue, people who know me know that.” Bridge says he's ZZ Top’s No. 1 fan. He began collecting memorabilia for the bearded Houston-born rock band when he was a child; his first piece was a poster he won at a carnival game while living in Arizona. “I call it collecting, my wife calls it hoarding,” Bridge said. “I just became obsessed, not just with ZZ Top.” In honor of Skloss, Gibbons and Bridge’s friendship, the company says, 75% of restaurant proceeds will go to the St. Jude Foundation, with which Gibbons has worked closely over the years. “(My wife) Christina and I are absolutely thrilled to be supporting such an amazing organization and to continue to give back to those in our company who have contributed so much to our success over the years,” Bridge said in a statement. by HBJ.

  8. This thread was originally created December 29, 2015. I'm reposting / reupping this because this post and other content from me are no longer available on the forum due to a mod removing my account and its content in "error" (supposedly). An archive link of the thread before its deletion is here. Mods, please don't move this to the Heights forum where all of my Washington Corridor posts were moved to. Mods, also don't sneak and move this thread and all the others for Washington Corridor, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Independence Heights to the Heights forum once all the previous content is reposted as y'all have done in the last two weeks and continue to do. This is NOT in the Heights and it's not part of the Greater Heights area in any way. This is in the Washington Corridor area, an area that as suggested and advocated for previously needs its own forum because there is lots of development happening here, much spurred by the Sawyer Yards and Buffalo Heights developments. That in itself usually merits the creation for a new neighborhood forum. Until then, posts for those neighborhoods should remain in the forum for "Other Neighbohoods" has is done with other threads that don't have a dedicated neighborhood or area of town forum.Thanks. Swamplot is reporting that the old Drake nightclub at 1902 Washington Ave (was also The Gatsby and The Mark in recent years, was also Olive's Drug Store in late 1800's or early 1900's) is transforming into a retail space. One of the proposed tenants seem to include Tacodeli out of Austin. Also included in the center according the marketing brochure is a high end barbershop, brewpub and ramen restaurant. From Swamplot: Yet another fast-casual semi-gourmet taco chain from north of town appears to be spreading saucy tendrils into the 610 Loop — Austin-based Tacodeli, which announced intent to expand to Houston and Dallas last year, is now appearing in renderings and marketing plans of Lovett Commercial’s site at 1902 Washington Ave., across the street from upscale cocktail bar Julep and just west of cow-to-table butcher shop and steakhouse B&B Butchers. Tacodeli will be jostling against Torchy’s Tacos (also an Austin export), Fuzzy’s Taco’s (a Dallas chain currently working its way down through the north Houston ‘burbs to West Gray and Post Oak), and Velvet Taco (another Dallas chain) in the rush to claim territory in the local tacoscape, already thick with native Hous-Tex-Mex options. Tacodeli’s new spot is the former home of once-chandeliered nightclub The Drake, now the site of several elaborate grafitti murals. The Drake faced scrutiny in 2012 from Parroquia de San Esteban, a Catholic church located immediately west across White St., for allegedly generating the scandalous trash appearing on the church’s property, including beer bottles, condoms, dirty needles, and obscene fliers. http://swamplot.com/citywide-wave-of-taco-colonization-will-continue-with-occupation-of-former-drake-nightclub-in-sawyer-heights/2015-12-29/

  11. http://downtownhouston.org/site_media/uploads/attachments/2014-01-06/140102_Current_Projects_11x17.pdf This proposal has been on the development map for a while now, guess no one really noticed. Anyway, the owner behind the plans recently asked the DRA to increase funding. I'm not sure if the building will be converted to residential or hotel use.

This restaurant is finally getting close to opening. The build out is almost complete and they have started hiring.

  16. I nominate NewQuest Properties for Idiot Developer of the Year. Their penchant for clearcutting and tossing up cheap-looking strip centers is unrivalled. They're developing a heavily wooded parcel behind a neighborhood with million dollar homes over near Grant Rd. & Louetta. It's a nicely wooded parcel and there's really absolutely NO need for any more strip centers as there are numerous brand new centers that lie mostly vacant. So I asked them what they were planning on building at that location..they said "they didn't know"..."not sure yet"..."but we're clearcutting that land"...."you see, the beauty of Texas, rather the beauty of Harris County is that we can do anything we want with the land" Even if that means pissing off the communities you develop in? Pissing off the very customers they ultimately hope to serve by trashing their community with more junk they don't want? Brilliant strategy NewQuest. Brilliant. Good developers create lasting value, and are welcome in the community. NewQuest isn't one of them.
  17. Replat application for the land that used to have an auto shop on the NE corner of Yale and 5th St. E&I Investments bought the property in 2013. "yale St. Plaza at Fifth Street" is just the subdivision name for the replat. Sounds like retail, but developers use funny names for subdivisions. Hopefully this is the first step in finally redeveloping this lot. Can't see how it could sit vacant for much longer with 700+ multifamily units going in across the street.
  18. Looks like something is stirring on the property next to Spanish Village on Almeda. It seems like it might include the old restaurant. Also, Localist signs on the fence.

Developer plans to break ground by the end of the year.
  21. EXCLUSIVE REPORTS From the August 12, 2005 print edition Car dealership gives way to urban infill Jennifer Dawson Houston Business Journal A high-end development mixing retail, residential and possibly office space will soon be parked on an inner-city tract that has been occupied by auto dealerships for the past three decades. Trademark Property Co. is negotiating a long-term ground lease on six acres on Westheimer just west of Mid Lane, which is currently home to a Central Ford dealership. Trademark is the Fort Worth-based developer behind the $100 million Market Street project in The Woodlands. That successful 34-acre development includes 400,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and 100,000 square feet of office space. Read More...
  22. Does anyone have a good idea of what Rice Village used to be like before its current incarnation as a more upscale place with chains and quirky boutiques? The closest I've found is a long-standing bead shop that closed a few years back (along with the late Variety Fair, and a head shop called "The Rat Hole"). Was it more of a counter-cultural store collection, or more of just a ramshackle bunch of businesses that congregate around universities and aim for the college student demographic? Or both?
  23. Texas Medical Center Commons provides oasis for staff, visitors Thora Qaddumi Houston Business Journal Work began this week on a new phase of the building that has become the cornerstone of the Texas Medical Center -- the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons. Over the next five months, an enclosed skyway connecting the Commons with the newly completed M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center will be built, and the McGovern Gardens, a landscaped outdoor dining area, will take form.
