  1. Earlier this year, there was a news item that Occidental (Oxy) was in talks to buy Conoco's (now ConocoPhillips) old headquarters on Katy Freeway. More recently the business media has reported that Oxy has put all of their Greenway Plaza space up for sublease and that the space will be available when Oxy moves to a "a newly constructed, owned property to the west.” Of course, not a single business reporter in this town has managed to discover or, so as we know, even inquire about, WHERE Oxy is building their new headquarters, how big it might be, who is the architect, etc etc. Has anyone heard anything?
  2. Very cool! Never knew about this hotel. I found this business advertisement in the newspaper The Houston Post dated September 1, 1914. The Newport Hotel 711 1-2 Preston Avenue LF. Grassmuck, Prop. Phone Pres. 3731 Nicely furnished rooms by the day week or month
  3. wow! Found a very old hotel that I never knew about. Thought I would share with HAIF. From Houston City directory for 1897-98. Denver Hotel, 1010 Preston ave, John Roessler, prop.
  4. According to Culturemap, looks like Inn at the Ballpark will be rebranded as Westin Houston Downtown on December 6, 2012. Westin already has the hotel listed on its website as well. http://houston.cultu...-hotel-shakeup/
  5. I noticed a variance request sign up on the fence of the parking lot between the Rice Collaborative Research Center construction and the Hilton Hotel. Does anybody know what it could be? Edit: There are two addresses affiliated with the Mixed-Use Development in the Texas Medical Center. Latitude Med Center Apartments is located at 1850 Old Main Street (or 1850 Old Main Street Road.) InterContinental Houston Hotel is located at 6750 Main Street (or 6750 South Main Street.)
  6. I was browsing the publication The Texas Jewish Herald dated September 18, 1930 and came across this business advertisement. Never heard of this hotel so I thought I would share! Fox Hotel 1006 Dallas Between Main and Fannin "A friendly hotel with every convenience" Fire proof - steam heated Newly furnished throughout Rates moderate A.C. From the publication Greater Houston Texas and the Southwest, dated September 1929. The Sterling Hotel Mr. R.S. Sterling, Owner. Hedrick & Gottlieb, Architects, Houston, Texas.
  8. woah! Look what I found! I searched HAIF and only found one post dating back 18 years ago. Thought I would bring this to the surface with pictures! Loos like the 1950s? I know the Houston Main Street Airport was located at 9100-A South Main Street. This motel development would either have been next door to the airport, or came afterwards. 9. Love the old cars! Looks like the Ramada Inn located in Gulfton would have been active in the 1960s? There is a (new?) hotel near there. Did this get demolished and rebuilt into something with higher density? Look at all that natural grass and not concrete! Cool bit of history here. Ramada Inn 6855 Southwest Freeway * Houston, Texas 77036 Phone (713) 771-0641 Twelve minutes to Astrodomain . . . Complete hotel service . . . coffee shop . . . Rama Club . . . 10. My very first science fiction convention happened at this place back in 81 and it was such a blast. I met every player in Star Trek there as well as a slew of writers I always looked up to. I was 11 at the time and shortly after I heard the hotel was knocked to the ground. I remember liking the inside but all I can really remember was the roof was green. Anyone have any pics that'd like to share? Wyatt C. Hedrick (often misspelled as Wyatt C. Hendrick)
  11. I just discovered this obscure motel on South Main! It was the Clover Leaf Motor - Motor & Trailer Court, 16 units. Found this in the 1950 Sanborn map of the area.
  12. Discovered a new, historic, hotel today! How many Buffalo-named motels/hotels did Houston have? There were also; Buffalo Inn Motor Hotel At 9051 South Main St. Buffalo Motel At 3011 Allen Pkwy. From the newspaper Labor Messenger dated November 27, 1942: Buy Bonds With What You Save A Clean House at Low Rates Hotel Buffalo 523 Preston B.3-1015 Excuse me if 523 Preston is a phone number. I assumed B. 3-1015 was the phone number.
  13. The only 15-story hotel I'm aware of that was in the Med Center was the Anderson Mayfair on Holcombe, but I haven't seen a good picture of it. This is the Tidelands. Is this what you were thinking about? http://www.lileks.com/postcards/motels/TX/tidelands.jpg
  14. Hi everyone I am new to this board and wanted to see if I could get this answered please. In the early 80's when I traveled to Houston with my family we would stay at a hotel close to Rice university and I think it was called the Rodeway Towers??? Not too sure about the name is was an older hotel and wondering if it was torn down and if so when. We stayed there from 1980-1984 every summer but forgot the name. Any help would be great.
  15. Holiday Inn Express to go in at North Main and I-45--on next planning commission agenda. Not likely to be anything spectacular, but with the small footprint of less than an acre and a half, should be of some interest. SWC Norma and North Main. Grota Street officially abandoned by COH last month. 85 rooms. 6 floors.
  16. This looks interesting. To be built near the current Sam Moon shopping center on the east side of 45. http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/woodlands/business/article/Growth-continues-in-Shenandoah-with-new-6191521.php#photo-7797434

  18. I wonder how much longer this hotel by Vantage Hospitality Group will last considering it's across the street from the TMC3 Campus. On Google, it is also named Sleep 'N Go Hotel Houston Medical Center at 1025 Swanson St.
  19. So recently I've picked up an interest in the late Shamrock Hotel, but this especially caught my eye: Glenn McCarthy. I'm curious as to whether there are any renderings of this--an indoor shopping complex seems very forward thinking and probably would be the first true indoor regional mall if built. Anyone have more details on this? Wyatt C. Hedrick (often misspelled as Wyatt C. Hendrick)
  20. Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone has ANY information about the old Victory Motel that used to be on McCarty St. (It's now Centro America Truck Sales). There's an old sign that's still standing and some of the neon tubes are still hanging in there. Thanks in advance! Drew
  21. I found an usual motel this week. I wanted to ask HAIF if anyone knew more about it. Mainly, the address. I'm unsure if the old hotel/motel is located on South Main Street, or Old Main Street Road (in this instance, South Old Main Street Road) I guess we can figure this out by the date? This was in 1957, so I believe OMSR was still an active road. If you notice, all the other motels are listed as "S. Main" whereas the last motel, Navarro Motel, is worded differently. Makes me think it's not the same as the others, not on South Main Street. Or perhaps, the writer/journalist/reporter did not know the exact location? Any photos of this historic motel? Any more details? From the publication Texas State Journal of Medicine 1957-12: Vol 53 Iss 12 The following motels are available: Alamotel Court, 8700 S. Main. Braeswood Motel, 2116 Holcombe. Buffalo Inn Hotel, 951 S. Main. Carlon Courts, 8200 S. Main. Nomad Motor Hotel, 10000 S. Main. Plaza Motel, 1700 Old Spanish Trail. Pioneer Motel, 2902 Old Spanish Trail. Rainbow Inn Motel, 3713 Old Spanish Trail. Ranger Motel, 2916 Old Spanish Trail. St. Francis Courts, 3615 Old Spanish Trail. Sun Valley Hotel, 1310 Old Spanish Trail. Wallcroft Gardens, 1857 Old Spanish Trail. Western Skies No. 1, 2806 Old Spanish Trail. King Motel, 9101 Main. Navarro Motel, South Main Street Road.
  22. I found this postcard on worthpoint. Does anyone know about this? I searched and couldn't find anything. I can only assume this hotel was located within the Highland Park Amusement Park that was below the current-day Interstate-45? Awesome building!! Very cool. I also found an advertisement in the newspaper The Houston Post. dated June 18, 1906. Highland Park Hotel Cool, nicely furnished rooms and excellent board, by week or month. Old phone 4503 A.F. M'Clean.
