  1. Gah.. "For the customer who might feel as though this car doesn’t grab enough eyeballs, the brand offers an enhanced version of full-LED headlights that are accentuated by 47 cut-glass elements supplied by the Austrian company Swarovski. The lighting units house 30 crystals that serve as turn indicators, while the other 17 combine to make up the daytime running lights." http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2015-mercedes-benz-s-class-coupe-photos-and-info-news

  7. From the 1976 directory for Houston six of the seventeen listed McDonalds are gone now: 6610 Harwin Dr.: must have been somewhere in this office complex? 7702 N. 8. That small scale caricature of the dome in the center. Come on!
  9. Just a Dollar .19! (used to be Just a Dollar...lol) - and the remnants: http://arch-ive.org/archive/krupp-tuffly/
  10. This is excellent...thanks!
  11. Yeah, Snelling Motor Co. was at 2955 Kirby which is now Whole Foods (new building). It was also Plaza Lincoln Mercury in the mid 1970s.
  12. ^I still have my beat up little banner (I think the Chronicle gave them out?) from the championship party!
  13. ^That sounds about right. On 1953 aerials you can see those new neighborhoods and where South Park was pretty new and "merged" with Holmes right at the drive-in theater (that you can still see the ghost of today on 610/MLK)
  14. There's a Pancho's sort of near me (Almeda Mall area) - I went there a few months ago and it hasn't changed for decades, for better or worse..
  15. All I an do is give a list, but the Village area in the mid 1970s had Cobler Books (2517 Times Blvd.), Detering Book Gallery (2311 Bissonnet), Brazos (2314 Bissonnet), and Kendrick Books (2429 Rice Blvd.). Other random ones: Montrose had the Libran Book Shop (3700 Yoakum) and Montrose Book Shop (719 Hawthorne). Southeast - Bellfort Book Store (7143 Bellfort), Palms Book Store (2113 Telephone), and the already mentioned Colleen's (6880 Telephone). Oh, and of course, Mr. Peepers at 5200 Telephone (lol).
  16. Hmm! Learn something new every day! http://www.sloanegallery.com/polar_wave_ice_palace.htm
  17. I came across a neat advertisement for Meyerland from 1958 - it blasts Houston's no zoning and warns of "mongrel neighborhoods" and "stately magnificent homes mingled with neon signs hawking insurance agencies, beauty parlors, funeral homes and apartment buildings – melancholy reminders that Houston has no zoning law" http://arch-ive.org/archive/meyerland-houston/
  18. I love me some Lana del Rey and Katy Perry..
  19. Rice Urban Lofts? Is that necessary? (the urban addition)..
  20. Wow - thanks for the above picture of the Canal location! Is it from Houston magazine? I had driven by that location a lot and finally snapped some pictures a while back: http://arch-ive.org/archive/national-biscuit-co/
  21. Great news! I just passed by Stowers earlier today and noticed it was still vacant. And yeah, it's the only building that was left on the square block to make room for BG Group/MainPlace (Montagu Hotel, West Building, Bond Building, among others were torn down).
  22. http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/bay_area/living/houston-symphony-league-bay-to-host-day-by-the-bay/article_44b627ec-2579-51d9-ba6c-b439cb69159b.html
  23. I have quite a few city directories - some in print (that I can scan/photograph) and some pdf (like that one). Houston Public has a lot of early directories online now but I think the interface isn't user friendly..
