  1. Why would they? If the amount of people using the golf course is low as an 18-hole course, why would more people use it when it became a 9-hole? When I play golf, my friends and I always go to a 18-hole course minimum.
  2. Damn, I feel sorry for Dallas! Right after they announce Wade Phillips as their new coach, look who becomes available less than a week later... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ts/4548378.html
  3. I like Stallworth, and I hope we pursue him, but MAN would Rhodes be a good pick-up!
  4. In other related stadium news, Real Salt Lake and the state of Utah (MLS's smallest market), have just confirmed a new stadium deal. http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5186530 It's gonna be a mixed-use development in the suburb of Sandy. Great looking design, too. I'm happy for them. It was a crazy rollercoaster-ride for the city and state to pull off the deal, but they finally did it. It's also expected that San Jose and St. Louis will be the next two cities with MLS franchises in the next 3 years.
  5. I wanna see a 24-hour Starbucks on the Main Street strip. 2-story, too...
  6. I agree. Wortham would be a great place for a soccer complex (without the actual stadium), downsized golf course, and baseball fields. I think the primary focus from East End's residence would be the question of how the Wortham location could most benefit East End, and I would imagine that would be the best bet. Downtown would be awesome for soccer matches, but I would imagine the land costs to be high. I think the team and city should put more money on the infrastructure than the land within Downtown. Warehouse District (across from MMP/59) Should be pushed by the city. Have it connected to the Wortham site. It's the most professional and most logical location. The stadium could have much higher attendance and significance there than any suburb. It would have two major parks within proximity; The Wortham site, and the new Downtown park. If I were them, here's what I would do: -Lower the stadium below ground level to cut infrastructure costs -Build a glass roof over the seats as an amenity to make the stadium mixed-use for concerts and such without weather being a factor. That way, the stadium could be an alternative to Toyota Center for concerts if it becomes home to the NHL. I would suggest a retractable roof, but it would seriously higher the cost. Here's what I'm thinkin' of: -I would still design the stadium so it had a great view of the Houston skyline at a goal-zone, because the view is priceless. -Instead of the city spending a lot of money on the stadium itself, ask for tax-exeptions instead of funding the stadium itself, and ask the city to use the saved money to put it into the community around the stadium (ie. mixed-use developments around the stadium, schools, roads, the Wortham soccer complex, etc.) That way, the land on the stadium would rise in appreciation, and should the league not succeed or the team want to move in another 20-30 years, the city/team could sell the land. -Make it between 30-35,000 seats (all together including the suites, club boxes, etc.). We'd have the market and proximity to sell-out with the sport growing as it is. They averaged a little over 18,000 last season, and that was before Beckham signed, SuperLiga was announced, the 19 nationally televised game, the championship, and the number of players we have being named to three national teams (America, Canada, and Venezuela). BTW, I found this on bigsoccer.com... This may be the plans for the old Astroworld site. Probably no longer considered as a stadium home. Reliant Park itself, however, may still be in discussion.
  7. Here's the national tv schedule... http://web.mlsnet.com/mls/schedule/2007/national_tv/ Dynamo's on 19 nationally televised regular season games. Chances are that ABC may cover Superliga this Summer, and ESPN/ESPN 2 may cover the end of the U.S. Open Cup. Also, I think the locally televised games may be on TV 51
  8. Some new stadium news from the Houston Chronicle... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4532429.html The two major possibilities for the new stadium location would be Gus Wortham Park, or in/around Downtown. IMO, both are great plans. More people would probably utilize the soccer facilities on Gus Wortham than the amount of people currently playing golf there. In/around Downtown would also be perfect, though their practice field could probably be another location. I hope the golfers there don't make too big a deal on that deal, because that community would SERIOUSLY benefit more with the stadium there than the golf course that not too many that live around there utilize. Like I've said before, I'm down with the revitalization of East End and Warehouse District, stadium or no stadium. Warehouse District stands out to me as the place where they should pursue, but Gus Wortham would be great too.
  9. I'm hoping they stick with the 4-4-2 setup this year, even against Beckham. We gotta stay on the offensive no matter what.
  10. The full schedule was finally released today. Here's the 411... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4530228.html The schedule of games is as follows (all times CT): Sunday, April 8 LOS ANGELES 6:00 PM Saturday, April 14 CHIVAS USA 7:30 PM Saturday, April 21 @ New York 6:30 PM Sunday, April 29 CHICAGO 6:00 PM Saturday, May 5 @ Colorado 8:30 PM Wednesday, May 16 @ Toronto FC 6:00 PM Saturday, May 19 NEW ENGLAND 7:30 PM Saturday, May 26 @ DC United 6:30 PM Sunday, June 3 FC DALLAS 4:00 PM Thursday, June 7 COLORADO 8:00 PM Sunday, June 10 @ Columbus 4:00 PM Thursday, June 21 CHIVAS USA 8:00 PM Sunday, June 24 @ Kansas City 4:00 PM Saturday, June 30 @ FC Dallas 5:00 PM Thursday, July 5 NEW YORK 7:00 PM Sunday, July 8 DC UNITED 7:30 PM Thursday, July 12 @ Chicago 8:00 PM Sunday, July 15 TORONTO 7:30 PM Sunday, July 22 @ New England 3:00 PM Saturday, August 4 @ Real Salt Lake 8:00 PM Saturday, August 11 @ Colorado 8:00 PM Sunday, August 19 FC DALLAS 6:00 PM Saturday, August 25 COLUMBUS 7:30 PM Saturday, Sept. 1 KANSAS CITY 7:30 PM Saturday, Sept. 8 REAL SALT LAKE 7:30 PM Sunday, Sept. 16 @ Los Angeles 7:00 PM Sunday, Sept. 30 @ FC Dallas 2:00 PM Sunday, Oct. 7 LOS ANGELES 2:00 PM Saturday, Oct. 13 @ Real Salt Lake 7:00 PM Saturday, Oct. 20 @ Chivas USA 9:30 PM In addition to the MLS schedule, the Dynamo will compete in three other competitions in 2007. They will participate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and SuperLiga. Our core team's back with Canadian MVP De Rosario, and of course our national team member Ching, Clark, Davis, and a few others. Beckham's coming to town October 7th, which will probably be the first time ever that a soccer match was a hotter ticket than an NFL game on a Sunday. Not to mention the fact that we're in Superliga this year, plus the fact that the league will be nationally televised on four major networks this year (Univision for the first time this year), Houston's gonna get some MAD airtime this year. If there were ever a time to win the MLS Cup, the time would be now:) P.S. The All Star Game will be in Denver, and MLS Cup 2007 will be at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C.
  11. Actually, yeah. Word on the street has it that the big viewing party will be at the Mezzanine on 59 and S. Shepard. I can't decide if I'm going there or one of the Alief house parties for the game, but I think Mezzanine will be one of the biggest public viewing parties tommorow.
  12. Got some in da microwave, yo Yo Next of Kin, I think after Pavillions begins construction, we may see a spark of other developments around that particular area. Until then, developers seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach with Downtown until construction begins on that project.
  13. I won't believe Pavillions will actually happen until I see some bulldozers...
  14. For those who don't know, here's Gus Wortham's location (the possible Dynamo stadium location idea brought up earlier...
  15. Is it anywhere directly between East End and Downtown, or does East End begin right across 59 from downtown?
  16. Isn't that more of a Supreme Court issue than executive?
  17. Yo, where exactly is the Warehouse District in relation to East End? (Major apologies. Haven't been back in Houston long enough obviously...)
  18. I don't think Dynamo would suffer an attendance loss if Gus Wortham were the location. That being said, stadium or no stadium, I'm all for an East End revitalization. There's lots of potential there. I'd like to see projects that help build the economy for those living in that area. A world-class stadium and soccer fields there would be a major boost, but it shouldn't be the only thing done. There should also be plans in place to revamp all of Polk and Harrisburg from Gus Wortham to HW59 (downtown). Perhaps urban redevelopment up and down both streets that look great and are affordable. Kinda like Midtown's developments, but with a different architectural flare. Have them enhance the flavor of East End. I think Dynamo, East End, and all of Houston would win if that happened. I've driven by Gus Wortham, and it's a nice looking course. If there's low occupancy there though, I don't see any loss if it's replaced with another significant sports complex that would bring more people and money to Houston and East End. There's plenty more golf courses being built in and around Houston that are also really good quality. If Gus Wortham were home to the Houston Open, I'd feel differently, but replacing that particular course and revitalilizing East End works much more for Houston than Dynamo moving to the suburbs. I agree. I don't consider it a barrio either, but I think new developments there that rivaled SugarLand's Town Centre for pedestrian friendly shopping East End-style would be awesome.
  19. (2500 Cool Points Awarded to Tigereye. Keep up the good work, yo!!) I think a stadium on the Gus Wortham site would be a great success. It's in close proximity to Downtown (Just a straight drive on Polk), the area could use a revitalization, and it's in Houston. -A stadium for Pearland or Webster may be a success for those cities, but I think would become a failure for Dynamo. They'd have to settle for a stadium post-Beckham that has only 3000 seats more than the Rockets in order to hope they could sell it out, and their merchandise and marketing potential would be minimal. -Sugarland wouldn't be as bad, but they'd probably still have to settle for around a 22,000 stadium that wouldn't be as occupied as one within Houston. For Houston's sake, I hope we get a 27-35,000 stadium within close proximity to Houston's CBD. East End is actually a pretty good location: an area close to Downtown that could use a major revitalization. The thought of having Dynamo's practice fields there isn't a bad one, but I hope there's an urban development plan also involving the stadium around Polk and Harrison. Say Houston successfully got an NHL team; Dynamo stadium could be the main big-concert stadium/arena for when Toyota Center were not available. At East End's proximity, we could sell out at 30,000+, have the highest seating capacity of all MLS, and build Dynamo into the superclub prestigue. Here's another idea for Houston sports. Pearland and Webster would like more sports and entertainment within their communities. Why not make a pitch to the Houston Texans and Dynamo for their practice facilities? Webster could have Dynamo practice fields for MLS or international opponents, while Dynamo practiced at East End. Also, Pearland could make a pitch for the Texans to eventually build their practice facilities there since McNair has said in the past that their current location may not be permanent. Both would bring so much free press to both cities.
  20. Jeremy Shockey, TE of the Giants, also plays a good RB from time to time. ----------------- Speaking of race in the NFL, check this article out: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4502451.html The NFL, as is MLS, is pursuing a stronger hispanic advertisement campaign. It seems like a race between the two leagues as to who can remain the dominant sport in Mexico and the Latin-American community. According to this, David Beckham's signing is a big reason behind it. Their goal (which I think is unrealistic) is to turn the main love of Latin America from soccer to football. What I gotta respect from the NFL is that they're not taking any other league or sport in America for granted. They know soccer is now a sleeping giant in American sports because of it's potential, and they know football isn't an international sport like soccer, baseball, basketball, and hockey. I didn't know until after reading this that only 23 NFL players are hispanic. Remember, there's 50-75 players on a team roster.
  21. Are you talking about diversity/prejudice in the NFL, or diversity/prejudice in society? What does L.A. have to do with football? They don't even have a team.
  22. I see it as the exact opposite. If we hired people on our staff because they were black, I'd say that were prejudice and racist. It's not 1965 anymore, yo. We now live in a time where race doesn't and shouldn't matter in football. I thought Dungy and Smith proved that. There's other American sports where officials there are hoping to tap into the minority audience more because of a seemingly lack of minority athletes and interest (NASCAR, NHL, etc.). The NFL doesn't have that issue.

  24. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4501189.html NEW Superliga announcement. All three 1st round games for Houston Dynamo (against Club America, Morelia, and D.C. United) will be at Robertson Stadium. The ultimate home-field advantage for da OrangeBoyz.
