  1. Is Natachee's losing their outdoor space for this? If so, it will never be the same. The main attraction of their restaurant was the sandbox and outdoor area for kids to run around while bands played to the patio. I'm excited about this dev but hope they'll keep some sort of outdoor area.
  2. That's awesome Tigereye. I'm just still shocked this morning that we're even having this conversation. For such a long time, it seemed they wouldn't even touch an idea like this. They should have done this a long time ago instead of rebuking all ideas without funding. A leader is supposed to lead us to a final result, not just expect one to fall in his lap. The judge is actually impressing me now.
  3. I actually really love this idea. It's practical, serves a common need, and might even be a tourist destination. It even benefits any event at NRG. As for funding, I say sell advertising in it, throw in food vendors, and allow portions of it to be rented out.
  4. I just drove by and it looks like they are going to demo the gas station. Anyone have any details?
  5. Malls and retail centers are becoming less popular every day as more people shop online (especially the type of person that would live in a lux apt complex Downtown). I think you just need a couple key neighborhood hangouts (bars/restaurants/coffee/etc.), but forget all this talk about retail meccas. Grow the Galleria for shopping, grow Downtown for living and working.
  6. Couldn't agree more. That's the appeal of the VIllage. I'd love for them to tear out the entire suburban looking Village Arcade, add a parking garage on the exterior of the Village between Rice and the Village, then turn the arcade into a big, walkable, funky set of shops/bars/restaurants. It could become like 6th street, but without the street (just a courtyard in the middle) and hang some funky lanterns across it.
  7. Well, if you want it gone... you're still going to be spending a ton of tax $$$ just to get rid of it and turn it into a parking lot. Why not spend a little more and get something that can benefit the city?
  8. I'm confused by the orientation of the building to the road. Is that supposed to be Kirby in the rendering and they just left off the CVS and Express Lube lots?
  9. This is awesome and badly needed in the area. The lack of hotels and (non-chain) eating places near one of the busiest parts of our city always stumps me. Something like this is also needed down near Reliant (rumors are a Holiday Inn is coming at least).

  11. I was poking around on their website and discovered they are calling this "The Millenium Med Center". They have it listed as 378 units, which would make this their largest complex in Houston. It also says they are pursuing LEED Gold... http://www.dinersteincos.com/services/construction/
  12. I watched the entire thing from my office window. I never thought much about wood complexes before, but after seeing how quickly the place turned from smoke to collapse... I'll NEVER live in a wood apartment complex/condo. I also saw the worker walking around on the top and jump over to the balcony. That dude was soooo lucky.
  13. Yeah they've been busy at this place. I was surprised at how quickly they were able to make this place disappear.
  14. @Elseed Midtown land is owned by individuals... TMC land is the TMC. Also, the TMC has a lot of land still and their 20 year plan has them building on it a ton. The land is south and below the bayou. Probably in 20-30 years the TMC skyline will connect towards Reliant stadium. I'm on mobile right now, but the TMC website has a huge PDF outlining their growth plans south of the bayou.
  15. Really, I'm thinking a garage more for having an organized system to park. Even if the number of spots stayed the same and they claimed more greenspace, I think having an organized "park here" and "lot full" type of system would make more sense than the free-for-all it currently is. It would probably generate enough money to pay for tons of enhancements to the park as well.
  16. I'd agree with you for those who tend to be couples/older families. However, most of the people parking at the zoo lot are families with multiple kids with multiple strollers, other junk to load up to bring with the kids, picnic supplies, etc. and visitors from out of town. If Houston were a city with true mass transit... then you'd have a point. Yes, there are a lot of options nearby for parking... but no one knows about them unless you live nearby. For those visiting, there is no clear signage or indication of where there is public parking available and where it's at. Heck, even the Ben Taub parking garage (where people park at and walk across to the zoo entrance on the back side) has notices posted saying that the garage is to only be used for hospital visitors.
  17. With the growth of Houston and popularity of Hermann Park growing every day, traffic and parking at the main lot for the zoo is a nightmare and growing worse. Just the other day I witnessed two fights in the parking lot from people arguing over who gets the next open spot (with kids and everyone looking on). This is one of Houston's true destinations for tourists as well, and the current parking (and irrate behaviour due to lack of) is pathetic and should be addressed. I know some may not like the idea of a garage and would prefer to keep the park as natural as possible, but it is a serious problem and you cannot expect visitors from out of town to ride the rail, figure out where they can park in a med center garage, etc. There is no worse image to visitors than coming to our zoo and seeing fights in the parking lot and driving in circles waiting for a car to leave. Are there any long term plans to build a parking garage here? If not, who would be the responsible party for making this happen?
  18. I emailed Swamplot about this and they asked for a picture (haven't been able to take one yet). A guy at our civic club meeting said it was new multifamily but couldn't elaborate.
  19. Yes, the Greyhound station is the last remaining bad place in Midtown and I have not heard anything about it moving now (especially since the Intermodal terminal is not happening). I lived in Midtown for 5 years, walked/jogged around at night, but never felt safe around the station. My wife's grandmother who can't drive far will take the bus in to visit us occasionally and I go to pick/drop her off at this location still. It's weird going back to the old neighborhood and seeing how much Midtown has changed just in the past two years, but the station still remains the same (as it did back in 2005 when we first moved to Midtown). All that said, it's only bad within a block of the station (it's like they feel more powerful when they congregate together). The location of this proposed development would make me feel safeliving there (even though it's only three blocks away). The dealers/thugs that hang out around it do nothing to you and are cowards when they are not standing together with eachother lumped around the station itself.
  20. I believe it when I see them break ground. Milhaus went to the planning commission as well and got everything approved... then sold.
  21. That's great news. I'm glad to see something coming back here. I'll believe it when I see construction start this time (instead of being fooled by Milhaus).
  22. For this building I doubt insulation was a factor. They leave the doors open all the time as forklifts drive in and out. They painted this building the solid white color a couple years ago because the exterior paint was crumbling and they it was starting to get it's fair share of graffitti on the outside. I would bet it was done strictly for security especially since they have people sleeping on that front porch all the time.
  23. I used to live one block over on the corner of Anita and Austin. I friggin loved that smell of the fortune cookies being made there. They frequently threw bags of cookies into the dumpster (I guess the bad ones) along Caroline. I was soooo tempted to grab a bag but never did.
  24. If ever down near Reliant, my go-to place for gas is Kroger's at Kirby and South Main. Head a minute north on Kirby, right on Holcombe, cross Greenbriar, turn right into MisterCarWash. EDIT: Sorry, just saw your post above mine. Still, Kroger's for gas.
  25. I just emailed Ed Emmett asking him to consider the wireframe idea again. If they are going to pay to tear it down and raise the floor for parking, why not just leave the steel structure behind in the process? They could let people park in it, or rent it out and rope it off if someone wants to host an event under the wireframe. Eventually they could even light it up at night with cool displays. Both sides get their way. More parking, possibly another asset for Reliant Park to rent out that no one else around the world has, and the memory of the dome is saved.
