  1. I heard Crosspoint and Alamo Drafthouse couldn't make the "numbers work" so Alamo walked away from the project and is currently searching for an alternate site in Midtown. Meanwhile, Crosspoint is currently looking for a similar concept as replacement for the Alamo Drafthouse to anchor their Louisiana development.
  2. This just in from then mayors office. So is Macys being forced out by the property owner since it states a smaller Macys store wouldn't be feasible in the future redevelopment of the building? http://www.houstongovnewsroom.org/go/doc/2155/1671587/
  3. "Well it's better than what is currently there" seems to be the same old typical excuse I keep hearing for every once grandeur development that turns into a medicore disappointment. Quantity is not quality and I wish some of these developers would have the cajones to seriously build and invest big in this town as they so often do in others. What are the developers and banks scared of? And don't tell me Houston's bust of the 80's. Surely, we are passed that and have proven our staying power during rough times.
  4. Starbucks wanted a drive thru store in Midtown. Initially, they considered a drive thru only store but obviously that changed. The other Starbucks in the general vicinity do not have drive thru's.
  5. I've heard that one of the tenants will be a large Starbucks with a drive thru/cafe. Opening will be in the first quarter of next year. I don't yet know what this means, if anything, for the cafe only Starbucks on Gray St, just four blocks north.
  6. It's so funny this topic showed up because I was thinking the same thing about the golf course a few weeks ago! Anyway, I could only come to the conclusion that the golf course is probably being set aside for some kind of future expansion of the zoo though I really do like the idea of a Botanical Garden. IMO, I think any redevelopment of the course will more than likely have a green function, whether it be a future zoo expansion, botanical gardens or a Discovery Green type park.
  7. According to Culturemap, looks like Inn at the Ballpark will be rebranded as Westin Houston Downtown on December 6, 2012. Westin already has the hotel listed on its website as well. http://houston.cultu...-hotel-shakeup/
  8. Unconfirmed report from an online airline forum are stating that United Airlines announced to employees today that they will cut IAH capacity by 10%, cut 1300 jobs, cancel the IAH-Auckland route, and will NOT finish the Terminal B expansion at IAH. Again this is unconfirmed. Does anyone know if this information is true or not??
  9. Great news for the East End! http://www.bizjourna...o.html?page=all
  10. As nice as this park project sounds,1.5 acres really isn't large enough to make an impact as the 11 acre Discovery Green did.
  11. These may have been from the old Houston Electric streetcar system from the early 1900's. It was a pretty extensive system and lasted until the 40's I believe. One of the previous lines, was the Harrisburg line, which ran down Harrisburg Blvd. The line started at Union Station and ended at the Turning Basin, with eight stops in between.
  12. Oh yeah! I had forgotten about those. Weren't the arches going to be made out of some greenish colored metal trusses (similar to the Eiffel Tower construction) standing over the Pierce Elevated? Years ago, I remember seeing the colorful renderings of them in either the Post or Chronicle! I believe this was around the same time some private foundation was proposing to build a waterway canal down one of the downtown streets...Prairie? I forget which one. I think the waterway was near the courthouse and was part of the original concept for the Cotswold Project in downtown. Once the city took over the project, the waterway was scrapped and instead many streets were redone, sidewalks widened and head-in parking spaces were built.
  13. From a article by Ralph Bivens on CultureMap: "Houston may be important to Exxon Mobil. But Houston is not going to be the new corporate headquarters of the world’s largest energy company, Jeffers says" New Exxon Mobile Campus
  14. Don't know how reliable this is but the Channel 13 article on the project states: "Exxon had reportedly considered moving employees from California and Virginia to Houston, which would have been a huge boon to our area, but at this point it appears that is not part of the plan. The consolidation will leave huge office space vacancies in the Greenspoint area and downtown Houston." So it appears they are vacating the downtown office building.
  15. Was in City Centre a few weeks ago and from what I saw I honestly felt a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the design, concept and visual appeal are outstanding and top notch but it feels like something is missing. It needs more retail as the majority of tenants that I noticed are restaurants. It would have been nice to see something more along the lines of The Domain in Austin mixed with high end retail. Hopefully with time this center will evolve to a more diverse tenant roster much like its neighbor, Town & Country Village, which I find to be more appealing.
  16. I know this is an older topic but I have more stores from the past that aren't listed here: McDuffs Electronics Winns Variety Stores Crafts Etc Designer Depot The Home Front Silk Greenhouse Pennsylvania House Furniture Norwalk Furniture Idea LeeWards Crafts J Brannam Cloth World Furrows Home Improvement Pettigrew Smith Auto Parts Kinney Shoes Houseworks KidsMart Chief Auto Supply Superior Waterbeds Big Sur Waterbeds Sportstown Media Play Mars Music Planet Music MJ Designs Front Row Computer City Bizmart Pace Warehouse Price Club Incredible Universe Grocery World Solo Serve TH Mandy Siegal's Fashion Station Some of these stores were around for awhile, while most operated within a blink of an eye but none the less were a part of the long line of Houston retail history.
  17. The old Randalls at Westheimer @ Gessner was originally a Handy Andy, which opened in 1973 (not a Weingarten's). Randalls bought out Handy Andy and in turn, acquired the property in 1979, expanding it in 1988 and then demolished it in 2010 for a new "lifestyle" store. Additionally, I believe that the Randalls store nearby, at 1407 S Voss was also originally a Handy Andy since it has the same exact peaked roofline, footprint and stone facade that the old Westheimer/Gessner store had.
  18. In east Houston, Safeway had built a store in the late 70's, at Uvalde @ Wallisville. This location became an AppleTree, then a Gerlands Food Fair and now, Food Town. Additionally, Weingarten's had stores at Uvalde @ Woodforest and Federal @ I-10 East. After the buyout, these two stores became Safeway and then for a very short time, became AppleTree, before they both closed all together. They soon both reopened as HEB Pantry Foods which lasted a good amount of years. The Federal location is now a Sellers Brothers, while the Woodforest location remains vacant.
  19. According to Starbucks, they were scouting for a second location in Midtown a few months ago, probably further south of the existing West Gray/Midtown store. These plans were scrapped because it was deemed to close to the existing Midtown store but who knows maybe they changed their minds.
  20. Looking out my window tonight, I noticed the colorful lighting on the Wells Fargo building is off. Does anybody know or think if this has anything to do with the ice storm last night?
  21. Hey Plumber, thanks for the history. Do you know when the mall was built? Visually, from Bing Maps, you can still tell it resembles a small shopping mall. Looking at the exterior, it appears to still have some of the original architectural features of the mall incorporated into the updated design (i.e. the arches on the department store building).
  22. There was also a Champs at I-10 East & Federal, which is a Burger King now. Several blocks up on Federal there was also a Del Taco, which is now a pawn shop. That particular stretch of road is all run down and very dangerous now.
  23. Seems we have a "no go" according to today's chron.com: Developer Davis scrubs planned Titan condo project Randall Davis has cancelled plans to build Titan, a 25-story luxury condo tower set for Post Oak Boulevard, because of the economic crisis. The local developer said he was unable to reach his lender
  24. I believe the building that is being converted to Hotel Indigo used to be residences for senior citizen's
