Great pics. You reveal the "real" Galveston. The upscale Galveston is another set of pictures. But I enjoy the "real" Galveston most of all. Of course, the new, upscale highrises will be another set of gorgeous photos. And the beach, we need lots of pics of the beach and/or bay when in Galveston. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the pictures. I hope to be visiting Galveston the first week of February. Have you eaten at the first picture ( BBQ)? How is the coffee shop doing? Seem a shame they have to return to dealers trying to burn down their business.

Thanks aslowdodge. Simp's is very good imo, if you are in the mood for soul food. They serve bbq, but only on certain days. The coffe shop just celebrated they're first year with a party, the community was invited. The mayor, and George Mitchell himself visted the couple after the second incident to show their support.

Nice. That Cabana Club looks like a good place to get stabbed.

Where is the library?

The library is on 27th street across from Garten Veren. It's now the Nia Cultural Center. Tons of pictures and information of African American history on the island. A Kwanzaa celebration was going on inside while I took my pictures.

Thanks houstonfella!

Actually my first time in galveston I thought "this is texas, I'm gonna eat BBQ every day and still not have time to hit them all" I was surprised i hardley saw any BBQ places at all. I ate at Queens and that was it. When I went to Florida I ate BBQ a lot.

Speaking of which, what place do you like to eat at in galveston?

I always go to saltgrass, and Shelley's on the west end, but what else id there? I did go to bennos last time. The fish was on the rubbery side, but the cajun potatoes were awesome.

Best BBQ on the island, hands down... Leon's World Finest. No kidding!

I've driven by that place before so i will check it out. I went to the website and it had a ordering page. Imagine the surprise when I tell them I am 2000 miles away and I will tip them for delivery.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?

well it's part business and part fun. I have some rentals on the west end. I've been to galveston maybe 8 times now in the last year and still haven't seen moody gardens yet but been to Home depot many times :)

I agree I live in a beautiful area. I am showing some friends around who are from out of town and told them that this is one of the best areas to live in if you can afford it. The climate is mild all year and has everything within driving distance. In one hour i can reach the beach or rocky shores, redwood forests, dry rolling hills with oak trees, hilly areas, flats, marshes, delta waterways, lakes for boating, mountain tops, be in th ecountry or in the city with lots to do. San Francisco and San Jose with major theater and night life, all pro sports teams. Also Lake tahoe & Reno with snowskiing in the winter, casinos just 2.5 hours away. It really offers a lot.

It's too bad the price on home is so outrageous. I bought a house in Cypress Tx for $160K. The equilvilant house in my area is about $750K. Although I have heard it is easier to get a high paying job here than other parts of the country.

Still Galveston is a place I like. I think it has a lot of upside potential. Affordable beachfront property, tourist attractions, redeveloping areas and much more yet close to Houston and all the advantages of a major city. I love the Historic district and enjoy just driving around there. I am a photographer by trade and hope to one day spend time just photographing the island rather than always working on the properties.

I am glad I found this site and am definitelty going to check the resteraunts people listed here. I have a friend that lives in Tiki Island and is restoring a home in the Historic area. I'm gonna drag him to these places too.

thanks for the new photos. I always enjoy it when you take more images.

Some areas I recognize. Are there any other areas off the beaten path that only the locals know about and tourists don't?

I drove by Leon's a few times but it always looks like no one is there or it's closed. Is it popular?

Where is the place that has the sign at the beginning with thwe bbq & sould food?

leon's closes at 6? Maybe that's why it looks so slow when i drive by looking for dinner.

I'm going to try your recomendations next week when I come into galveston.

As far as off the beaten paths I was meaning neighborhoods, oddities, historical place etc.

I don't know how I missed Darragh Park as I go down Curch st all the time and my buddy is retoring a place at 16th and Church. I'm going to go and look for this place.

I don't have any other suggestions other than the ones I gave in the "Best Place to Take Pictures" thread. You've prob already seen most of Galveston (what's worth seeing) anyhow.
