Atrocious.

Only 90 lashes for being alone with a man who was not her husband? Now that's atricious. She should be stoned to death for such an offense. WHORE!

Thank God I, and my wife & daughter, live in the United States.

Saudi is turning around and opening up. But it's happening soooo very slowly that it's got a lot of us Westerners in a twist. It also has such a long way to go that it seems like it may never get there.

Movie theaters are banned there. Can you imagine an entire country filled with wealthy people, and no place to see a movie?

There was a great piece on BBC not too long ago about how there's a whole generation of Saudi 20-and 30-somethings who don't know what to do with their lives. They're bored, unemployed, and underskilled. They won't work at Starbucks because it's beneath them socially. But they can't get engineering jobs because they've been handed things all their lives so they don't know how to think.

In all fairness, she wasn't punished for being raped. She was punished for breaking the law (being alone with a man who was not her husband or family). That is against Shea law and she was punished for it.

The logic would follow that if she had just stolen something then got raped, should she not be punished for her prior offense simply because she got raped?

No the logic is that there is no logic is punishing a woman for accepting a ride with a friend who is a male & not her husband. Comparing that to even petty theft is still apples to oranges.

Why should we interfere with another country's legal system? You guys would be up in arms if another country came here and prostested our legal system.

This is true, but at the same time we have to recognize when another country's laws & punishments are crimes themselves. Beating a woman for riding in car with a man not her husband is the crime here, not the car ride.

It is comparable being that it is against the law in her country. She knew this and she knowingly broke the law. There are dumb laws everywhere, including here. But being dumb shouldn't preclude punishment if you break said law.

The law is extreme in our opinion, but it isn't particularly evil. She broke that law and is being punished. We can disagree with the law all we want, but that doesn't make her actions any less illegal.

Maybe we can agree that the Saudi government's actions were immoral by any standard of human decency?

After all, the Nazis had laws as well.
