he was a boy scout scoutmaster and also volunteered for a lot of charity organizations.

he unexpectedly died in '99 when he was in his forties.

Dunlavy Park in southwest Houston has been renamed in honor of Ervan Chew, a man considered by many to be an outstanding volunteer and a notable member of Houston's Chinese American community.

Chew died in January 1999 after a brief illness. He was 42.

A wet, chilly morning failed to dampen the spirits of the large group of friends who attended Saturday's renaming ceremony and witness the unveiling of a new marker identifying the playground and baseball field at 4502 Dunlavy as Ervan Chew Park.

The park was acquired in 1945 and, like the street, named for Herbert D. Dunlavy, who was killed in World War I.

Ervan Chew, located at 4502 Dunlavy (Key Map 492Z), was the first neighborhood park in Houston to allow dogs to legally run free, off-leash in a designated dog zone.

I have a problem with renaming something that was already named after someone. But since we already have a Dunlavy Street, I didn't have much of a problem with the renaming of Dunlavy Park.

After Chew's mother died when he was 6, an aunt took him under her wing. Jennifer Chew Biancardi thought her nephew would look cute in a Cub Scout uniform, so she signed him up.

I agree. And it's a sad commentary on Houston that we have so few new parks that the old ones have to 'un-named' in order to honor the current crop of admirable people.
