I can't read Chinese but I'm guessing those signs in the sand say, "No pee in water!".

Our concept of density is some half-filled sidewalk shopping zone stocked with well-heeled, urbanesque beautiful people. Real density is in-your-face and invasive.

I have a friend in Chengdu, a hamlet in China of 10 million metro, with a density of 9 times NY City. And probably most educated Americans have never even heard of the place. Every time I call her on her cell, I hear people in the background.

That beach is not as crowded as this photo makes it appear. Yes a lot of people are there, but the distance between them, and the full length of the beach, are much greater than than what we see in the photo. This compression of horizontal distance is called the "foreshortening" effect, and this shot is a vivid example of how it's used.

If you take a photograph of a number of widely spaced objects using a long telephoto lens you’ll notice that the objects seem to be crammed together in the final photograph. This change in perspective is called foreshortening of distance.
