Things that irritate me

Parrothead

Recommended Posts

I grew up in Pasadena.

We could all learn something from every culture, good,

bad or otherwise.

Mexicans as a whole, have a tremendous amount of pride

that some born here in the US do not come

close to having for our country.

I fly my US Flag and Navy flags on occassion...

but not every day because I don't want them

to weather too badly AND according to my military days, you are supposed

to have your US Flag lit when dark...and I don't

have that sort of setup.

Back to the topic...if you don't like the setup and that is

TRULY why you hate it, if you can afford a mount and a flag pole,

then go buy them one and help them make it look nicer...

otherwise, there is not much to do.

Thank God this is the USA, where we can

discuss the issues and fly whatever flag we want on

our car or house (provided deed restrictions do not set limitations).

I honestly prefer the diversity.

A Nazi flag would freak me out though.

From Vicman: Katie, tell them that the TEA requires all people to learn how to write an English essay by Grade 11. By Grade 7 students are expected to take TAKS in English. So, that should kill your neighbor's argument.

Vicman is wrong. The loopholes to get out of any TEA hope that students speak English are big and many. Make no mistake, the TAKS test is given to those students who will pass. Those that won't are farmed out to SPED or placed in other safe havens. TAKS tests are even administered in Spanish now! Not Vietnamese miond ou, but Spanish. Vicman is a kid who hasn't worked within any Texas school district as an administrator or anything else. Looking up a bunch of TEA codes on the net doesn't mean squat when it comes to real life practices and what's REALLY happening in the schools.

As to the argument:

Spanish is spreading across the US and has to be nipped in the bud. Requiring educators --or anyone else--to learn Spanish because the Mexicans crossing our borders refuse to assimilate is just wrong on so many levels it's mind-boggling. How does a mass of foreigners get away with this? Isn't anyone out there just a wee bit disgusted by the amount of Spanish in the public places now?

Has everyone been brow-beaten so much with the liberal mantra of "if you dare critisise anyone "of color" then you're a racist" no one is willing to step up and say enough already?

I find it beyond offensive.

Toggle: "TAKS tests are even administered in Spanish now! " - As I said, TEA only administers them in Spanish until Grade 6. See the test listing here: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessm...taks/index.html

Toggle, if you want to not prove what I say, find some TEA documentation that explains the loopholes. "Looking up a bunch of TEA codes on the net doesn't mean squat" isn't going to work around here.

"Looking up a bunch of TEA codes on the net doesn't mean squat when it comes to real life practices and what's REALLY happening in the schools."

What's "REALLY" going on in the schools isn't supposed to happen, then. How do I know that you know "what's REALLY happening in the schools" ?

The people flying the Mexican flag in the US are exercising their First Amendment right that makes this country worth the dirt it sits upon. Live with it or go to some other country where you can only fly their flag.

Jeez, I can't believe this thread is still going on :lol:

Hey Brewster, guess what? I'm just exercising MY right to free speech about it. Someone flying the Mexican flag in their front yard in the manner I saw is a personal affront to the dirt on which this fine country stands, IMHO.

Now, live with it or go to some other country where they don't let you express your opinions.

Granted, we already have enough Spanish foreign language requirements in elementary school (By middle school kids may choose between Spanish, French, and other languages, if available).

This week one of my old Woodlands neighbors was informed that her son's speech impedement (lazy tongue) was a low priority. This is because there are so many kids in Deretchin ELem that don't speak english, teachers are tapped. CISD has in the past provided therapy to speech problems, but now they are drowning in certain schools.

Parrot, after hearing this news I knew you made the right decision.

Believe me, in my experience they let these ESL kids coast right on through to graduation, "helping" them anyway they can.

Too bad a topic isn't like Wall Street stock. If you had been paid $ for everytime someone added to this valuable topic you would be rich!

PS, I told my mom and whole family (bros & sisters) and they are just loving that someone was bold enough to say what millions have on their minds but are too chicken to say in public. You should be nominated for President! Now let's continue with the pathetic Mex buses and street truck vendors and keep going! Yippeeee!!!! :lol:

Toggle, are you SERIOUSLY offended by the term "Whitey" ? You may be the first whiteman in America to so be. That's just me speaking from the whiteman's perspective.

I am offended by *whitey.* I prefer something dignified, like *honky.*

I'm not chicken, lol, but I don't want to be President. Guess all we can do about disrespectful neighbors is to take it to the ballot box. Your family has excellent tastes.

Seriously this time, lol - You all can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that once a mailbox is in place, it becomes the property of the US Government. Tampering with mailboxes is a federal offence, that much I am sure of. Attaching any flag to a mailbox is illegal and a federal crime. Report it to the Postmaster.

Dear moni,tampering with mail in other people mailboxes is a federal offense.However,whatever mailbox you place is your personal property. DUH

Just got off the phone with him. Mailboxes are considered federal property. He also said there are statutes protecting that property. He also joked (well, sort of, you can't always tell with him) that flying a flag of another country on federally-owned property (like, say the Capitol Bldg) could be interpreted as a sign of war.

What an interesting analogy.

Using a private website like "greatschools" isn't valid for citing those kind of stats Vicman. Use TEA instead. At least then, when you're wasting time pulling meaingless stats, they'll be accurate.

Why you're focused on the LEPs of whitebread CISD rather than HISD which is overrun with illegal aliens is beyond me.

We've been invaded. We're still being invaded. Why aren't there U.S troops on our border already? When Bush brings them back from Iraq, they should be deployed to stop the invasion here.

Why don't you start your own Militia, and go protect the border yourself since you are so worried about it ?

Thanks for the information, and this is how I remember the law. Maybe I am being Petty, but the law is the law and I for one think we ought to respect it. Making fun of our govt. seems to be a pasttime of not only illegals but US citizens as well.

1. Greatschools gets its data from the TEA and other reliable sources. Aside from parent comments, Greatschools is considered to be a reliable source.

2. Just for your curiosity, I shall use the same source and present the LEP numbers of Houston ISD high, middle, and PK-8 schools.

LEP percentages in Houston ISD

Alternative 6-12 programs

* Harper Alternative (Houston) (23%) http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/tx/other/3559#students

* Carter Career (Houston) (5%) http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/tx/other/3473#students

* T. H. Rogers (Houston) (3%) http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/tx/other/3571#students

Zoned high schools

* Lee (Houston) (38%) http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/tx/other/3454#students

* Sharpstown (Houston) (21%) http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/tx/other/3516#students

Sucks to be schooled by a highschooler, huh Toggle3 ? I mean, since you already got your GED and all. :blush:

I'm now a freshman in university :)

Part of the point I made is that LEP rates differ within school districts - the rates depend on the individual school.
