Historic Gulfgate Restaurants

Recommended Posts

I graduated from Milby as a Mid-termer in January of 1962 and also attended Bonner Elementary and Deady Junior High. We lived on Howard Drive in Meadowbrook from 1945 until 1962. After that I lived in various parts of Southwest Houston. I've been in the Spring area for over 30 years. We had good friends that lived both next door and accross the street from Paul Boesch. He had met his wife in Hawaii while in the service during WWII. I attended several neighborhood parties with them. They were both very nice people.

My house on Glencrest is supposedly next door to Paul Boesch's old house. The lady that has lived across the street since '68 told me it was his old house. Did you know the Provenzano's next door? I bought the house from Ruth Provenzano who moved to Meyerland to be closer to her daughter. The Boesch house, or so I am told, is the one on the corner of Glencrest and Glenview.

Does Ruth have a daughter named Iwona?

Yes i did go to Mitchell in the 70's. My brother was in the first graduating class from Mitchell. PM me and i'll bet we know many of the same people. Not sure if you ever had Mrs. Thompson but I ran into her recently at Heb Gulfgate. Boesch was on Red Robin in Section 1.

Small world. I had Mrs. Thompson in (3rd or 4th grade -- getting old -- memory loss!). She must be up there in age. Anyway, you have mail.

My wife and I graduated from Milby in 1977. She took the exact same route as you from Bonner to Deady to Milby. Her Mother still lives in Meadowbrook on Neal right next to the swimming pool. If you lived on Howard during that period I wonder if you knew the Lyles. They still live on Howard in a two story red brick house on the south side of Howard about a block west of where Neal hit Howard. Mrs. Lyles parents lived just across Howard from them. Also there was a house owned by the Richardson family that they ran as a boarding house for some time. My uncled lived ther when he worked for Bloodworth-Bond shipbuilders. His twin sister, my Mother was married to Leroy Richardson for a number of years till they divorced. My Mother later married my Father and I was born in 1959. This is such a small world.

Kips Big Boy was on the NW corner of South Park now MLK and Griggs. Across the street on the SW corner was Montgomery Wards on the SE corner was Palms Center, a pre-mall shopping center but not really a strip center, I don't remember what was on the NE corner.

Big Humphrey was a wrestler. I don't remember where it was on Park Place but I do remember Kolchak's BBQ just west of Telephone Rd., it closed in the last couple of years.

Strangely enough the Holiday Inn Hotel at 45/Wayside had a pretty decent menu going for quite a while. I worked there bussing tables as a teenager around 75-76. My boss was a lady named Doris and had one of the tallest beehive hairdoes on record. She ran a pretty tight ship and we were always on our toes. Holiday Inn at that location would bring in quite a upscale crowd even up to point! The cook was a real nice guy that was a Sr at SF Austin he was learning how to cook gourmet meals. Great experience, I recall how he would give us delicious samples of shrimp, fish and so on. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner items that would satisfy any palete. In the evenings Doris would serve highballs to the guests. I thought it was so grown up to see that! There was a lady named Phyllis who was our hostess. Can you believe it was that elegant? She had to dress in a cocktail/evening dress or full length gown on several occasions mostly on weekends. We had a fantastic view of the pool area too, was very tropical in nature. I recall we would have celebrities pop in sometimes to sign autographs. One day we had James Arness appear. I was too young to remember the western show he was once popular in but the people there loved it. Towards the later 70's and 80's the place started its final decent into hell's kitchen (pardon the pun) and it had to be put out of its misery. When we would drive by on the overpass of 45 I would tell my newphews that is where I worked and thats the balcony we would sneat out to smoke a cig or 2. All that's left is that lone palm tree where the pool once was. Pleasant memories for sure. Wonder where everyone went....

So yes, Holiday Inn/Wayside-45 was wonderful in it's hey day!

Howard Johnsons was near there too. That was a CB hanout in the early and mid 70s. We would meet there for coffee then someone would get a head start and the rest of us would try to find him using our signal strength meters. That whole area from Broad to Telephone went downhill fast.

You can say that again ie: That whole area from Broad to Telephone went downhill fast.

Rather remember the way it was.

There was The Helena Hotel across from Holiday Inn, it was kind of our rival. It had a real nice pool too which has since been cemented over. When it went downhill it closed then a few years later was a kind of nice Latin/Rock dance club closed then became a Seafood place for a real short time was toooo expensive, you may as well have gone to Red Lobster! Howard Johnson's was down east and had a cool bar which boasted all you can drink keg beer for $3.00! That finally met its fate about 1989? Can't beleive it is still there. We used to round up all the local hippies and swim in the pool all day long, they also had plenty of ice for cold brews. Last I heard they also film "Cops" there on a regular basis. Again, better to remember its heydays!

I'm wanting to remember a short-lived restaurant chain called "Roy Roger's Roast Beef Sandwich". I'm picturing it somewhere around Gulfgate.

Okay, I'm 14 years late finding this question, but I think of these posts as just building an encyclopedia of information for future Houston history buffs.  So here is what I remember.  I believe Woodridge is the name of the street that runs behind Gulfgate.  It crosses the Gulf Freeway where the Woodridge Baptist church is (or was) located.  If you left the church and drove down Woodridge south toward the 610 Loop, I believe that you would find Roy Rogers Roast Beef's formal location on the right.  Last time I was down that street, I think there was a Wendy's on the right, so Roy Rogers would have been located a bit further down on the right just before you reach the 610 Loop.  That is the best I can do with my aging memory.   I don't think Roy Rogers Roast Beef was around for very long, but I thought it was a good place to eat...quick and affordable if you enjoyed roast beef.

There were several Roy Rogers Roast Beef locations around Houston in the 70s. One was on the West Loop southbound Feeder just south of Westheimer. After RR went out of business, that location has had several incarnations over the years. For a time it was Arby's, but that went south. Today it is - or was - a porn store named the Zone d' Erotica. It folded a few years ago but the signage is still in place.

Roy Roger's WAS good. I worked at the old Mobil service station on the SE corner of the Gulf Freeway and Woodridge. Every Saturday and Sunday, I would walk to Roy Roger's for lunch or dinner, and get either their roast beef sandwich or fried chicken. I loved both!! Then, when the McDonalds opened up next to us, I'd go there. All the time until I got sick of it. We'd been given coupons for a free Big Mac to hand out to our fillup customers. But I used many more myself than I handed out. To this day, I still can't eat at a McDonalds.

Maybe you are thinking about The Copper Kettle. I never went there, but it was located on Telephone Rd, close to the 610 South Loop. It looked more like a 1950's place, to me. Sat far back on the lot. Same side of freeway as Gulfgate.
