nmm
thought this would be fun. how traveled are you? what cities have you visited in the world? how many major cities have you visited in the US? i made 2 seperate lists, one for US cities, and another for world cities. definition of major cities are cities with some sort of economic or political significance that affects the world on an international scale. London, Nashville, Ibadan, Nairobi and Manila are major cities, but Laredo, Tx and Houston, Alaska are not. bachanon
bachanon - how was Israel? How is Jerusalem? Is it safe to visit? i was planning to hit up the big three this coming winter.i was in israel in '81. the border to the south (sinai desert/egypt) had only recently been opened. lebanon, to the north, was still sending shells across that border. my chaperones weren't exactly smart, in retrospect, to have allowed me to visit both. we were "stupid" americans who thought we could go anywhere. naive, might be a better word. but i digress. you may want to check with an american embassy over there or check state department warnings. i wouldn't go during a muslim or jewish holiday unless the reason you are going is to specifically honor a particular religious observance. ssullivan
Here's my list. I think I got them all. I included a few that aren't huge cities but are home to important things like really major universities or state capitals, or in a couple of cases, are simply the largest city in the state. In the US, so far I've visited all but six states (Hawaii, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Maine). In terms of places I've flown to/through/from, I've taken off or landed at 73 airports (3 international, 70 US) including some really remote places. Internationally I've been to only three foreign countries, but will be adding at least two more later this year when I go back to Europe.United StatesHouston, TXDallas, TXFt. Sooner&RiceGrad
I don't consider anything less than 750,000 or Tier 2 at least to be a major city. No Biloxi or Quad Cities, sorry.Let's get it started then:Here's the obvious ones:HoustonOKCTulsaSome more:New York CityPhiladelphiaBostonWashington/BaltimoreCincinnatiAtlantaCharlotteRaleighTampaBirminghamNashvilleMemphis (big slum)New OrleansSan AntonioDallas/Fort WorthAustinAlbuquerqueSan DiegoPortlandSeattleMinneapolisOmahaKansas CitySaint LouisChicagoAnd so many countless smaller towns with less than 750,000 people. Just about anywhere between any of the above-mentioned cities that can be accessed via the Great American Adventure, A.K.A. the US Interstate System. And the World, arranged in order of favorites:CopenhagenLondonBarcelonaRomeAcapulcoParisCape TownWarsawEdinburghTorontoMadridEdmontonCalgaryLyonManchesterJohannesburgMexico CityCairoMexico City was nice and all, and there's some great colonial architecture and it's really not as bad as they say it is. Just don't drink the water. Cairo was a slum but the pyramids were amazing. Johannesburg was boring. We took a diversion to see Africa's greatest business center one year we were vacationing in Cape Town. The skyscrapers there are neat but I didn't enjoy the feeling that crime was all around in a few parts of town, but it's definately not what people think of when they think of Africa. Madrid, Edmonton, and Calgary were just some boring places I was in on business... I was in Warsaw for bidness too but fell in love with the city, oddly enough. Copenhagen and Barcelona really are undiscovered gems.
