zangler
Any Montrose Historians able to help me understand what Gibbs was doing operating a boat dealership in the middle of Montrose for 20+ years? Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of someone actually having worked there or purchased a seaworthy vessel from there? It seems that if the business was so strong that the closing of Gibbs would have left a massive vacuum in the area for those wanting to purchase a boat. So was was the place really? Ross
Gibbs was an actual real life boat store. The Montrose location was opened in 1958, when there were a lot of regular type folks living in town, as the rise of suburbia had not started. Here's a Swamplot piece on the topic http://swamplot.com/gibbs-boats-on-west-gray-and-montrose-is-selling-everything-now/2014-09-24/ Keep in mind that car dealers were common on Kirby for many years, before moving out to the suburbs.
