Benny Chows, the latest Berg Hospitality Group restaurant, opens June 28. The restaurant is located at 1818 Washington Ave, Suite A-180.

About the restaurant's design from a Houston Chronicle article last week:

The Benny Chows menu will play out against a high style design that includes natural wood and stacked stone, black lacquer accents with brass and gold, hand-pained red and gold wallpaper, cherry blossoms and bird cages, antique architectural touches and Chinese lanterns.

More details about Benny Chows' design published yesterday on CultureMap.  The restaurant is located at 1818 Washington Ave, Suite A-180.

The main dining room features hand-painted red and gold wallpaper that tells a story. A gold bouquet of cherry blossoms serves as a visual focal point.

“It’s a complete landscape scene that goes around the dining room. The most I’ve ever spent on something like that,” Berg says.

...An alley between the two buildings serves as Benny Chows’ patio. It’s decorated with paper lanterns an an homage to New York’s Chinatown.

So this lot was used for customers of 1818 Washington project and didn't belong to the church but Lovett.

To my surprise it will be two new restaurants one being 2 stories and the other being a 1 story building.

It's not that much of a surprise being that Lovett Commercial disclosed future plans for this property back in 2018. The property is part of the East Washington / 1818 Washington Ave property. It's phase II of 1818 Washington Ave, which is part of the larger Sawyer Yards development.

Lovett Commercial included plans for another section of the 1818 Washington Ave development. The developer also submitted this to the planning commission in 2018 when they were requesting a variance:

Mods @Urbannizer @Triton please consider merging this topic with the ongoing topic for 1818 Washington Ave.

As noted in the posts provided above, this is phase II of the East Washington / 1818 Washington Ave development from Lovett Commercial. Phase II of 1818 Washington Ave (located on Center Street) has been discussed in detail in the existing 1818 Washington Ave topic since 2018.

The are updated leasing materials for 1818 Washington Ave. I'm not certain when the leasing brochure or the website showcasing the property were updated. I'm thinking sometime between late summer and the fall.

1818 Washington Ave's property website also includes updated photos of the first phase.

Details from the listing:

  • Patios and rooftop terrace with panoramic downtown views
  • Generous surface parking
  • Future plans for a second phase of development

October 2022 Street View of 1814 Washington Ave.

1814 Washington Ave is owned by Lovett Commercial. It's also part of the larger Sawyer Yards campus.

Local butcher shop and steakhouse B&B Butchers is housed in the Dittman Building, which is located on the property. The building was once home to Dittman Bakery.

1814 Washington Ave, which also includes the Dittman Building, appears to be part of collection of buildings that make up East Washington.

East Washington is the name Lovett Commercial marketed 1818 Washington Ave until a few years ago. According to documents submitted recently to the city's planning commission, East Washington also incorporates 1814 Washington Ave. Previously, Lovett Commercial marketed 1814 Washington by itself. Until around 2017 or 2018, the property was listed on Lovett Commercial's website at Washington Dittman Building.

B&B Butchers and The Butcher Shop operate out of the former Dittman Building at 1814 Washington Ave. Both are food & beverage concepts from Berg Hospitality Group.

In addition to the Sawyer Yards master plan document, a table with tenants listed. The table is for East Washington. It was included with recent platting approval documents. The tenants are listed under each building. Furthermore, the table notes plans for future tenants in East Washington's new phases.

As mentioned in the above post, Lovett sought approval for a subdivision plat. Included on the plat are nearby parcels that will soon become part of Lovett's East Washington development.

According to the table, there are plans for phase two of 1814 Washington Ave. Listed under 1814 Washington B are two units. Both are 3,500 sf.  One is unit is for a future restaurant (possibly a neighborhood-type eatery). The other unit is for an office.

As for the future Savory Group restaurants slated for 1818 Washington, I don't know if it's a local hospitality group or not.

I recall reading about a Colorado restaurant with the same name looking to expand to the Houston market. One of the restaurants mentioned was Larkburger. I'm unsure if it's related to the one listed for 1818 Washington.
