29-95 is hosting their weekly Monday happy hour at the Alabama Theater on November 9th.

"The free event honors two special organizations, Houston Mod, a local group that is helping to preserve some our city's most historic homes and buildings, and the Cinema Arts Society, another non-profit Houston group that is hosting the 2009 Cinema Arts Festival. The festival opens Nov. 11 and runs through Nov. 15."

Wait... the Alabama theater is no longer an overpriced book store?

Did it get restored to its original theater form?

Barnes and Noble opened the Shepherd @ W Gray store (containing a Starbucks or two, I have no doubt) and then closed the W Alabama Bookstop. It was facing demolition and then someone came along and is using it for some kind of H-Box thing, which is like a mobile capsule that you get in to watch a movie. There have been a few parties held, and its going to be used for the upcoming film festival. So maybe there's some hope for it.

Houston Mod invites you to join us Monday, November 9th, 6 - 8 pm, as we participate in a special happy hour at the Alabama Theatre, formerly the Bookstop, 2922 South Shepherd.

The theatre was featured in the recent Houston Mod gallery exhibit, Endangered Modern. It is currently listed for lease and facing an uncertain future.

This evening event is hosted by 29-95, a group bringing attention to the diverse arts scene within Houston. (The 29-95 name is derived from the latitude and longitude of our very own Houston, Texas).

It honors two organizations, Houston Mod and the Cinema Arts Society , another non-profit Houston group that is hosting the 2009 Cinema Arts Festival.

What's going on at this happy hour?

~See the historic building and admire its soaring interior spaces.

~Check out the Cinema Arts Society's H Box , a state-of-the-art device that is part art gallery, part cinema. The H-Box will be showing video and short films by 10 artists. The film by Dora Garcia scrutinizes a derelict architectural icon of 20th-century modernist architecture in Brussels.

~Participate in a book and DVD film swap. In homage to the building's history as a bookstore and a movie theater, guests are encouraged to bring their gently used books and movies to swap.

~Learn more about Houston Mod. Become a member and help promote the preservation of modern architecture. Houston Mod publications will be available including the new book about Houston architect William Jenkins.

~Refreshments will be provided by Saint Arnold and Late Nite Pie.

We hope to see you there!

The happy hour at the Alabama Theatre was excellent. The crowd must have totaled 150 to 200 and there were plenty of aspects to keep everyone interested. Houston Mod appreciated the opportunity to meet so many folks who wanted to find out about the organization. Thanks for all the new memberships, Mod publications and Astrodome bumper stickers you-all purchased. Your support is appreciated.

Experiencing an event in that space was unforgettable. Let's hope events like that will help someone envision new uses for one of Houston's most exciting landmarks.
